Basset
Hi, Does anyone else avoid buying Nestle products? I've been trying to avoid Nestle for the past few years, to show my disapproval of their aggressive marketing of baby-milk powders in the third world, which contributes to 1.5 million baby-deaths each year. I do miss Kit-Kats!!

Guest
yes - and have done for many many years... the issue (despite Nestle's heavily financed marketing/spin machine) has not gone away... one tactic that nestle uses is to train local midwives to push milk powder products... (getting babies onto them with free samples in the first few days - and of course when they go home they only have access to contaminated water and the babies get sickness and diarrhoea) many are persuaded (quite falsely) that they will not produce enough milk for twins - so one must be fed on formula.. with the following consequences: Phil Thanks, Bassett for raising this! http://www.babymilkaction.org/ (not just about Nestle)
Popcorn
yes, it's the water that's the problem isn't it. Phil, that photo is heartbreaking. How ruthless can a company get?
Basset
Phil, What an amazing and shocking photograph! It's perfect to show the damage being done by these big companies, giving false information to the vulnerable families, all for their own gain! Thanks for posting it. fairy&cake
im in tears after looking at that photo, look at the bottle fed babies legs. Unfortunatly, the only milk seth can tollerate is SMA Soya milk. we tried Cow and Gate Soya and it still made him sick. i hate the fact he has sma, but i never wanted to see him strapped to monitors again due to weight loss. Olly
Thank you so much for raising this - I was aware of the issues, and would never consciously buy anything with Nestle on the the label, but I've just followed the link to the Baby Milk Action website, and through that found the list of Nestle products. I'm shocked at how many things they are behind - even petfood! Because I only buy FairTrade coffee and chocolate, and don't buy breakfast cereals, I haven't actually bought anything on the list but that's more by luck than by deliberate action. I wish I could persaude a few of my friends not to buy KitKats etc ..
feemcg
Its a tragic situation for these women, often trying to breastfeed several children under 5 - the problem is that the women themselves are so undernourished and dehydrated that their milk often does 'dry up' and they are faced with a very difficult dilemma. My personal feeling is that they should be promoting/providing contraception not formula milk (but thats a whole other topic for discussion!). Jules.
Yup, it is huge. I'm quite surprised at the Body Shop being on there, but I knew L'oreal had bought it, so I should have made the connection. At my homebirth support group we also had a discussion about Dannone products, (french dairy) but I can't remember which company makes them
Cinnamon
Thanks Annie, we crossed posts with the same list, so I have deleted mine Not much there affects me, apart from Cheerios, which the girls love

Egluntyne
Blimey....what a thought provoking photo. I wonder why no-one advised the poor mother to alternate the twins between breast and bottle......if a bottle had to be introduced at all. I was always let to believe it was cow and gate owned by nestle I got that from a boycott nestle site years ago. Ive avoided them like the plague. Only one problem the only prem milk I could get was c&G. Now I'm quite upset as I've been boycotting the wrong thing if this is the case

They target mothers here in the UK instead.
kissinuk
Don't forget that Nestle will also be responsible for some supermarket brands, especially cereals. It all depends on how far you want to take it, personally I'm vegetarian and already do my bit to buy ethical food (ie fairtrade where possible etc ). Plus none of my wages fund any kind of factory farmed meat, fish or meat derived products. I think avoiding that huge list of brands would just take it one step too far for me - it's hard enough finding stuff to eat as it is! I fully understand why people would boycott them though. But I'd personally also like to see more people boycotting products with gelatin/battery eggs/isinglass/fish derived omega 3 etc etc. On a similar subject however, I am sick of the do-gooders in this country who try to push breast milk onto new mothers. Our 16 month old was brought up on SMA (veggie of course!) and is perfectly healthy, it was our choice and it should stay that way! The same applies to many friends of ours with older children who are also very healthy.
Egluntyne
We have access to clean water and there is assistance for those on low income, making starvation unlikely, so there is a difference. I doubt that many babies die because they were bottle fed in the UK/ Western Europe. The picture of the mother with twins says it all about bottle feeding in the third world.
