motherhen
Wayne arrived at 10.30 this morning, and is totally adorable but full of energy. He's black, a lab/retriever cross, and seems to be very intelligent and mature for his age - just over 6 weeks. He's just having his first sleep, so I can catch my breath - it's 12 years since I last had a puppy and I'd forgotten how energitic they can be. There is also the extra time spent on teaching him how to pee on command, but I get loads of help and support from other puppy walkers and people in Guide Dogs. I'll try and sort out a photo soon - but he's just like the Guide Dog puppies they had on Blue Peter earlier this week - and chews just as much This is Wayne sleeping with his teddy bear, aged 7 weeks He's moving too fast for any awake photos atm Edited May 4, 2006 by Guest

Sheilaz
Jane, I was looking out for this thread, knowing that Wayne was arriving this morning, and shall be following it with interest. I know it will be very different training a guide dog, to having a long term pet, but I'm so pleased that you have taken this on. Wishing you all the best, xx
motherhen
He woke up at 1.30, but is now sitting quietly at my feet with a chew Hens are seriously not impressed and doing lots of Victorian ladies with mouse things and getting huffy - Wayne seems unconcerned about them Ah, bless, he's just gone to sleep at my feet with his head on my foot

The Managing Director
He looks gorgeous, wish they stayed puppies a bit longer, Flint is not quite 9 months and if you tell anyone he's still a puppy they look at you as if your mad The Chief Assistant has already chosen a name for the next one though just have to pick our moment to tell Murdo about her Hope Wayne settles quickly certainly looks like he has

chocchick
Ahh, I thought he was cute before I looked at the picture. I did one of those really girly squeaky noises (because so cute) and OH asked if I was alright!
Cate in NZ
He looks adorable Jane. I'll be watching with interest to see how it all goes.... such a worthwhile job, but I bet it'll be hard letting him go at the end. Sorry, though, I don't get the dogs feet thing. Do dogs feet really smell nice? Does any creature that walks outdoors in all kinds of muck and whatever have the potential to own sweet smelling feet But I confess to disliking feet. Full stop. The only possible exception is very new-born babies, but even then I'd rather have ears and noses I like doggy ears especially

Wiggle
just adorable...absolutely adorable. I think it is lovely that you have taken on this important role. Have you trained guide dogs before Jane?

motherhen
He's my first Guide Dog puppy and he'll be with us for 10-12 months. Then he'll go elsewhere for his specialised training before being placed. It is a bit of a full time job atm, but apparently things will get better quite quickly, but there may be a bit of a blip when he hits the doggy equivalent of teenager. I'm getting loads of support though, one of the other puppy walkers (she's now on her 24th puppy!) rang today to see how things were going, which was lovely. He's very bright and has already learnt to 'come' and 'sit' although he won't do it if there is something interesting to sniff at - very early days though. I'm getting very well trained at knowing when he's going to pee or poop so I can rush him outside to do it on the paving while I say the magic words over him so he learns to associate the words with the action. This means that when he's older he'll pee and poop on command when he hears the magic words
The Managing Director
. I'm getting very well trained at knowing when he's going to pee or poop so I can rush him outside to do it on the paving while I say the magic words over him so he learns to associate the words with the action. This means that when he's older he'll pee and poop on command when he hears the magic words [/color] such a joy aren't they, is well worth it though and at least the weather's nice , we got Flint in october... so many nights standing in the cold and rain repeating appropriate phrase, often to no affect only to come back in the house and 5 minutes later errr oops He got it in the end though and it is so good knowing there's only one bit of the garden where you have to tread carefully Good luck with Wayne, they are just as much work as a baby aren't they , except you can at least walk away for a little bit, course you never know what they'll have done when you get back!!!! highlight of Flints career so far is the hole in the sofa , oh and all the headless Barbie dolls
Lesley-Jean
This means that when he's older he'll pee and poop on command when he hears the magic words We always end up talking about Poo Could we train our chickens to poo on command rather than all the time

AnnieP
I did this with my dog Jayne...it reaps huge dividends... now when I say "Be clean" she tries so hard to empty her bladder! I have a friend who trained her dog to pee in her shower cubicle when she was out all day!
