This year, as a pal has sent her girl off to Uni,its made me realise its only a couple of years until I am in the same situation

So, as well as trying to save as much money as possible,I have started giving Devon 'life lessons' of a sort.

How to cook decent,cheap filling stuff,how to launder (clothes,not money),how to manage a bank account etc.

 

No doubt she will have forgotten most of it by the time she gets there anyhow

lol Sent my third son to Cardif Uni in September and I thought by this time I would have got it right. Extreme cooking lessons, extreme supermarket lessons and even offers of extreme ironing lessons !!!! but I was not expecting "help mum I did my washing and it has all turned pink can you send some new underpants". Just wait till xmas and they come home - no petrol in car when you come to use it infact no car cos they all use it - its lovely.

That's so funny Daughter managed very well first couple of years at uni (not even going to go into what my texts and phone calls are like now she is in France for a 7 months ).

 

I'm preparing my 17 year old son for next week when we are away. I've shown him how to use the washing machine, got a feeling I might as well been talking to the wall!

 

I've just been out and bought him some food to eat. Last time we were away his sister was around and she cooks well. Apparently he texted her to ask how to cook pasta - I fear I have failed him.... I don't think he even thinks to read the back of the packets.

My cousin went to uni a couple of weeks ago and he phoned my aunt the next day to ask her what he should do with the rest of a loaf of bread.....he had only had 2 slices off it for a sandwich!

Made me think too. 11 yr old daughter (12 in 3 days time), just started secondary school, so I've got 7 years to prepare......AGHHHHH

 

I've failed miserably already. At her age I was off on the bus alone into town shopping, bus to school, burnt all my eyebrows off but setting light to the oven gas burner..... oh dear..... and I've only just let her walk 500 yards to school on her own and never let her touch the cooker. What am I doing??????? Boy I need to get with it.

I think it totally depends on the child though. My YS (nearly 11) always wants to cook and quite frequently cooks himself fried eggs on toast and other things including a lovely victoria sponge. I think my ES just can't be bothered. Although now he has a girlfriend they tend to eat in a lot and I'm hoping they will progress from putting a pizza in the oven!

He he he Us mums could write a book on the antics of our so called up children

when the go off into the big wide world (well Uni it's a start ) Thankfully my DD could cook, do laundry etc her texts were for help with the ans at quiz nights

She has a Bsc hons but trust me you wouldnt want her on your quiz team

 

I may be wrong but I think girls do have more inherent instinct (mine had anyway) but to be fair DS was pretty clued up living in a predomonantly female household He went into the RAF at 18 1/2 so it was sink or swim you could cut your finger on one of his ironing creases Trust me you never outlive your usefulness they keep finding there way home

Well no he was not joking I had spent so long making sure he was ready for the big things, eg budget planning, reading lists, travel arrangements etc. I never thought about the little things like loo roll! We have just returned from a flying visits because his sisters are all missing him and its their half term thius week. He text a shopping list before we left! I dutifully arrived with said washing up bowl and drainer rack, thinking how good that he wanted an organised kitchen sink.......only to discover he wanted them to pile up the dirty pots in so other people can use the sink! You dont want to know what the kitchen looked like! We went into York town centre for lunch. His sisters then started to tidy up and clean his room and things which is probably why we have the problem to start with! Oh well he'll live! thanks for all the messages.

Always wear your rose coloured glasses when looking at their kitchens and bathrooms.

 

I always had to clean them both, especially the latter, before using.

 

Girls aren't much better, either.
