Cyber Chook
I'm adopting a cat from a rescue centre in the next couple of weeks, and can't seem to think up many good names - anyone got any ideas? I don't know yet if it's going to be a girl or a boy, although in a household of one wife, two daughters, two now deceased lady guinea pigs and five fluffy knickered ladies in the garden, my poor husband is hoping for a boy... BeckyBoo
Seefer? (C fer cat?) My friend at college (long time ago) had a cat called chair leg my Frank was originally called Jasper when I got him from the rescue place, there was him and Julian who the children re named Frank and Buster after the Koala brothers on TV. I love thinking up names for my animals, there's nearly always reasoning (of a sort) behind my animals names! My last cat was called Basil as he'd had an operation on his leg when I ended up rescuing him, so he was Basil Fawlty because of his faulty leg! Phoebe
ours is called Fritz - my husband's idea. We all said "aw cute", and it stuck. Husband then revealed that he got the idea from "Fritz the Cat" - a seventies animation starring a rather seedy cartoon cat, with an eye for the ladies ............ Olly
ooh, you have to wait till you see him/her - then a name will come to you. The naming of cats is a serious thing, y'know! My friend's cat is called The Beast. He started off as Rex, but he's enormous and The Beast just sort of stuck.
Cyber Chook
I didn't expect to be sitting here laughing out loud, or rather LOL as my teenagers would say. I think you're right, Olly, I need to see the crittur and then something will come to me. Good fun daydreaming, though, a bit like planning a walk-in run! I know a Jarvis, an Elvis, a sadly now deceased Monty, and a Moleskin. Oh, and a Mouse. And my husband had two cats in succession when he was a little boy, called Cat 1 and Cat 2. I don't know why Steven is such a hilarious name for a cat but it made me laugh the most. Doesn't Ricky Gervais have a 'Steven' cat? dancing cloud
Loki is called after the Norse god of mischief, as I didn't like the name he had at the shelter, but he's really a big gentle softie and not very mischievous at all. He's always seemed happy with his change of name, but that's probably because it came with good food and a cuddle attached Puddy, my original wandered-in-and-moved-in, was described as "the clever puddy cat that could figure out how to get to the hedgehog food, when no other puddy cat could", but that was a bit long to yell out of the back door, so Puddy she became (Pud-Pud for the rare occasions when she's being a love). She's my avatar and you can see her name rather suits her but, when her name is shouted out at the vets, I still sometimes wish I'd thought of something more glamorous Think you're going to have to wait and see what your adoptee looks like ... Cinnamon
As he will be a farm cat, how about a farmers name like Seth or Adam or Gideon?

Snowy
When I was little my Nanna's cat was called Choo Choo, so that she could call it in doing that 'ch ch ch' noise My cats were called Scott (Armstrong because he was white) and Fred (Dibnah because he was sooty grey)
Seagazer
Well I've had a Katie, Tabby, Sooty (both not very original but I was young ), Smudge, Oscar, Molly, my current two are Sophie and Dave - or David if he's been naughty I really like the idea of a cat called Mouse, I might pinch that one for my next cat although I'm obviously hoping that will be a Maine Coon in which case it will have to be a large Mouse! I had a budgie called Pigeon, rabbits called Nuffink and Mrs and a guinea pig called Darling all curtesy of my children when they were younger Good luck with the rescue cat and I hope we will see lots of photos when you get him/her. Cyber Chook
Thanks everyone, some great names there. My husband said this morning that he thinks we should wait until we've been and come back from our holiday (June/July) before getting a cat, as it might be upset by us going away. I don't want to wait that long, but I'm thinking he's probably right What do you think? Caroline
Joojoo
I think you would probably be ok. Its another 4 whole months until July
Yorkshire Pudding
DS2 would like to suggest 'Spanner'. Might suit a cat who was a bit slow on the uptake, maybe? Our last was named Marmite by the friend who rescued her. It really suited her - she LOVED the stuff.
Tessa the Duchess
I don't think you should wait, 4 months is plenty of time for your new cat to settle in. I've had Camomile, Alameida, Kotchka, Brian, Eric, Creature, Pussy, Oscar and now Google. Tessa

bluekarin
Wow, what fabulous cat names. I've known Ginger, Peppi, Tuppence, Oscar, Bill, Merry, Ivy, Maia, Sam, Pippin (my friends really like LOTR hence some of the names) Kittifur, Pippin, Sophie, Remedial (poor cat. She was called Smarty pants, but when she couldn't work out how to use the cat flap, it was changed. Not by us I hasten to add - by my sis in law. She got called Medjal-puss-cat mostly). Ours are Oliver and Yo-Yo, and get called Mr Oliver and Mr Yo-Yo.
Cyber Chook
'4 Giant African Land snails - Ellie, Dot, Stripes & Max' - do they get eyed up by the chickens, Bluekarin? How giant are they? I've heard of them, but I don't know anything about them. In fact I think some were offered on my local Freecycle forum not so long ago, and I did wonder then... I've had cats, rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, stick insects and of course chickens, but never snails. When my daughters were little, one summer they collected about 20 garden snails and made a snail school, a snail circus (buckets and sticks for the snails on the highwire act) and a snail hospital. They painted each one's shell with a number and called a register for them every morning.
little chickadee
We have a "Rattle" (because he purrs so loud it sounds like he's rattling! - should get confusing as we're due a Guide Dog pup called Raffles!) the other two we have were initially called Bubble and Squeak from the cats home, but we didn't like that so we scoured the house for inspiration. "Claude" is named from Claude Debussy (while looking through our cds) and "Max" was named from a Max Speilman leaflet which came through the door. We have in the past had a "Frisby", Pip, Penny, Tiger, Mickey & Cleo. Do let us know what you decide on in the end.
