House Hunting/split due to family Tragedy

Recommended Posts

Won't the British Embassy repatriate him and then collect the money from you later, say by Direct Debit instalments? I thought that that was part of their remit. I remember my parents telling me that if ever I was in trouble, while travelling on the Continent, to go to the British Embassy or British Consul.

I don't know to be honest. Unfortunately my father is convinced that the car hire insurance will pay medical bills. I've checked the T&Cs online and there is no mention of it in there. Until he admits that my brother isn't covered we're stuck in limbo.

I'm really sorry to read how things have been going for you and your family. Its stressful enough when somone is ill in your own country, but abroad, with no one really helping it must be a nightmare.

I have been having a look on the Foreign and Commonwealth website and it says a few interesting things. If you've not had a look there, it might be an idea.

Help in an emergency

http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/about-the-fco/embassies-and-posts/emergency-help

Driving abroad

http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travelling-and-living-overseas/staying-safe/driving-abroad

It also says as a first step to get in touch with your local British Embassy or High Commission.

I hope this is of some help and I hope you find someone who will help you.

edited for spelling

Could you find your dad the number to ring them up - then if he's told by them he's not covered you might be able to move on with other possibilities. Won't be nice phone call for him but might let you get on with checking other routes.

Apart from that I can't add anything other than ((((((((hugs)))))))) xxxx

Shirl- Just got back - from Spain as it happens- so only just caught up. As we've just driven 2000 miles there and back it's especially poignant. We did have health insurance but the point about power of attorney is certainly not one I ever thought about.

All I can say is that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Spanish healthcare is supposed to be second to none as Ana's flock has said. I do hope you get him home.

Hi just catching up. The only news I've ben getting is from my Dad and he isn't very reliable so I've been taking it with a pinch of salt. I have to for my sanity. My Dad tells me Tom has several different types of insurance and some should pay out. Hopefully this can be used to bring him home. I'm going to ask to see the various insurance papers tomorrow so that I can stop worrying about the finance side of things a bit more.

Unfortunatley my sister who was supposed to be going out to Spain tomorrow is now not going. I'm not entirely sure why as I don't speak to her. I'm really cross that Tom is going to be alone until Saturday when my Aunt will be going out. I thought we had everything covered and then people mess around. :wall:

Shirl, try not to get bogged down by family arguments at this difficult time. I know it's hard but these situations will bring out either the worst or best in people and unfortunately sometimes it will be the worst. All you can do is what you can do. You are doing your best to sort out repratriation and you are being there for Tom whenever you can. You can't take on everything, others in your family should and must help.

I really hope you get Tom home soon, i think the suggestion of getting local media involved is an excellent one.

Thinking of you and Tom.......

Thanks. I'm trying to be friendly with everyone but it isn't easy. My Dad has told the hospital my Mum has been dead 14 years (she's very much alive) and has signed a form to say they do not need to resuscitate him. Obviously the rest of the family are furious. The other day he was telling me how much it costs to bring a body back from Spain. I had to point out twice that Tom is not dead.

I think I'm doing a lot of the running around because it's in my nature to want to take charge so I know things are done the way I want them. Other's in my family are not as confident as me so would have difficulty doing all the phoning around anyway. Not everyone is being helpful. Tom's GP tells me he can't complete a form concerning Tom's health because of data protection. When will common sense prevail?

Great news Tom has been moved to a Neurosurgery ward so out of intensive care. I think this means he is now physically ready to come home. I know it won't happen quickly but I am really looking forward to having him home.

Shirl, I'm so glad there is a bit of good news and I really hope you can have Tom home soon, it will all seem so much easier, I'm sure, when he is not so far away. I think you're being amazing, don't forget to look after yourself. Thinking of you
