xScrunchee
I'm just pleased that my OH is self employed and only took a week off work when my youngest was born-would have killed him if I'd have had him at home for 6 months
Space Chick
I think everyone should be entitled to 1 or 2 lifestyle breaks in their working life. I don't have children but do look after my elderly grandfather, it would be useful to be able to take a few months off for him if he needs it in the future. Egluntyne
Another death knell for small businesses. The last thing I would have wanted would have been Him Indoors hanging around the house for 6 months after I had given birth.
BocBoc
A chap at our work is on extended parental leave from mid August until January. I think it's a nice thing to have paternity leave but six months?! If I was a new mum I'd only want the OH there for a few days til the novelty wore off!! majorbloodnock
...I didnt realise men were having babies now too !!!!!!! (mother of three children) rant over.... Didn't realise parental leave was to recover from giving birth; thought it was to have time to bond with child during first formative months.... Didn't realise being a father ended at conception; I've obviously been doing it wrong.... (Father of two children) P.S. Not ranting, and tongue firmly in cheek, but general gist is still in earnest. Patricia W
Isn't the idea to give more flexibility as to who has time off and when? I know couples who have swopped roles with Dad staying at home with the children and Mum continuing to work -and not for purely financial reasons. It works for them. mostin
No-body ever likes to talk about this fact as the risk these days is miniscule compared to a hundred years ago, but sadly, child birth is not risk free . There is the very unlikely, but very sad possibility that the father may be the only parent, and I think he would certainly need full paternity leave. In normal happy situations, it may suit families to to switch roles. Two of the women I work with have stay at home OH's with their kids. Griffin
I would've absolutely loved to have had Mr Griffin at home for as much as six months! Our youngest is three and half now, I suppose it's too late for him to take it now
theherd123
Is it true that men will get 3 months full pay to? Most women dont even get that!
The Dogmother
I certainly didn't, or I wouldn't have been forced to go back to work after 8 weeks!
Busybird
I took 6 months off work when I had DS. I then couldn't bear to leave her so young so extended this - 12 years later I still can't bear to leave my children in the care of others (and yes, I know I am privilaged to have this option). If OH had been allowed big time off work I could see him not being happy to go back. Not that he did much with the kids when he took a week off after each birth... Redwing
Its a good idea and a boon to working couples I earn twice what my hubby earns so it would make sense in our house for me to go back to work and for him to stay home I don't think its a bad thing for us ladies, it gives more flexibility to the ability to start a family
SAB
The ideal would be if it is flexible enough for mum to take 6 months off and then partner (male or female) to be able to provide the baby with another 6 months at home - I would have loved that option. Chucky Mama
I would have definately have killed my OH if he had been at home for 6 months after my babies were born. Maybe one of these many daft surveys that keep popping up on the news could see whether there are more divorces following 6 months paternity leave
craftyhunnypie
Can I have kitten leave please? Looking after & playing with Poppy takes up most of my time! Emma.x

As I understand it (from Radio 4 this afternoon). That is how it might work.
