Son diagnosed with swine flu last night :-(

Recommended Posts

Alex has had a cough & been feeling rough since Sunday. His cough was driving us wild ( & keeping us awake ) so I took him to the doctors last night when I got home from work. The doctor "diagnosed" swine flu from his symptoms ( no blood test).

I've declined to get tamiflu for him, as he's certainly showing signs of improvement, but of course now the rest of us are going rapidly down hill with similar symptoms :(

I'm quite worried for hubby because he has underlying health issues, so I guess he'll be popping the pills soon.

Unfortunately many people call every cough and cold swine flu now and it sounds like your doctor may have done so, especially as he has not done swabs to confirm it. I think you've done the right thing not having Tamiflu as it does make people sick.

Interestingly if the rest of you are feeling unwell then it is UNLIKELY to be swine flu, since it doesn't seem to spread as easily as the media make out. I have had several clients where it is only one member of the family who has been sick, often a child who recovers well, and it was only one of my colleagues who got it even though we saw each other every day in the same office.

I hope Alex recovers soon and is back to his usual self. I hope you all remain well or at least only suffer mildly - considering the cold I had last week there are some nasty bugs going round but they do pass.

The 2 key symptoms with swine flu which do not appear with normal coughs and colds is an extremely high temperature and an upset stomach.

As someone who has had swine flu, and then had a serious secondary complication I can say that this really shouldn't be taken lightly, but if the additional 2 symptoms aren't there then my understanding is it is not swine flu.

I was off work for over 2 months (in fact I only started back to work on a rehabilitation part time basis yesterday) as the swine flu virus attacked and damaged my heart. Very Very frightening, I was admitted to hospital and have had several tests and investigations with a Cardiologist who has confirmed that the heart damage is not permanent, but I am not up to my usual fitness, but did feel well enough that I could return to work now.

I am usual a very fit and active 35 year old, but this has really knocked me for 6, the worse thing is is that if I had have had the Tamiflu then the virus would probably not have had the opportunity to attack my heart.

I know cases like mine as less common, but I would have thought it would never have happened to me.

Goodness Jules that's awful. A diagnosis wasn't around then but I think what I had last Christmas may have been it - I was off for 5 weeks and ended up on ventolin (i'm not asthmatic). Docs couldn't figure out what it was but having nursed a good few swine flu patients since I have a fairly good idea.

Thankfully a cardio involvement IS rare and I really hope you recover soon. Hopefully what Alex has is just a nasty bug. You are I presume being careful since you have already been weakened by your bout.

There is far too much media hype around about swine flu though and it's not helpful.

Totally agree. It's prevalent in schools around here, but so are other viruses. Many children have caught it, had the sudden high temperature etc, but been totally well within a week, much quicker than seasonal flu which is debilitating for at least a fortnight.

DD2 is now ill a 2nd time with high temp. I think it may have been SF. the first time & a cough/cold this time. Or vice versa. The worst thing here is, that despite my view, she and all her peer group are terrified of it, & are convinced they are going to die from it. Seriously.

Certainly not taken Tamilflu either time.

Jules, there's no reason to suppose OH should catch it if usual sensible measures are taken, although I can understand (very much so) your concern.

I'm not making light of those who have been taken seriously ill, esp. Debs, but that happpens anyway, and it's each case on it's own symptoms.

Very best wishes for his speedy recovery, and in staying positive yourselves as I'm sure that's the best defence. xx :)

Yes,I hope you all recover soon too, from whatever it is you all have :)

I could have had Swine Flu a couple of months ago - had all the symptons, but it could have been something else.No way of knowing without swabs *shrug*

Just hope it WAS Swine Flu, 'cos I sure don't want it again!

My two have both had terrible sore throats and nasty coughs, Oliver is still ill with it. I took Daniel to the doctors on Friday as I wanted to check it wasn't on his chest, the doctor just said it was a virus. A number of Daniel's friends have been of school this week with similar symptoms.

Tuesday the school sent a letter home saying a pupil in the school had been clinically diagnosed with Swine Flu, and a number of others were displaying the symptoms. So have my two had it or not? What hasn't been explained is why this pupil has been 'clinically diagnosed'?

Hope your son feels better soon.

Mr Webmuppet had the swine flu but didn't have a cough , he had a very high temperature and felt decidedly icky ( although he didn't have the dodgy tum).

Little Miss Webmuppet and I didn't catch it ( I did banish him to the conservatory where it was much cooler and he could be ill in peace) It doesn't appear to be that infectious otherwise more people at work would of gone down with it ( only 1 in 10 people in the office have had it). He didn't take the Tamiflu prefering to rely on Lemsip.

flu of any kind can cause complications whatever its called, swine flu or not it dosn't really matter, most of what people call flu is a bad cold anyhow. Influenza kills people, if you have a weakness or are vulnerable in any way, but the majority of us feel wretched for a while & then recover. But that is why we vaccinate vulnerable people every year. I hope everyone is recovering.

Interesting point _ when we were swabbing flu cases, only 1 in 10 had swineflu the others had other common seasonal flu viruses, so the testing stopped & everyone who was at risk & had flu is now offered Tamiflu

:( Hope Alex is feeling better soon. Fingers crossed here for him  and that everyone else is ok.

Ashley has got a really nasty cough at the moment, which he's had for a few days and the head cold part is now coming out too - poor little love was really poorly this morning so is off school for now. I'm just hoping that it doesn't develop into swine flu.

Oh poor lad, hope he feels better soon.

We've had the lurgy here for a couple of weeks. Bogwoppit was sent home from nursery with a temperature of 39.6 and we had a fair few days of high temperatures and sleepless nights. I've had fever, hot and cold sweats, stinking headaches too. We've both had really, really painful coughs and still haven't managed to shake them off. No idea if it was swine flu but not nice.

Problem is I know I'll catch everything going now as I feel completely run down. Ho hum!

Thanks for all your good wishes, guys.

He's turned a corner now, and although still poorly he's on the mend.

Shame the rest of us have headed downhill since Wednesday night :( We're coughing, aching in most places, have temperatures & are downig the paracetomol like there's no tomorrow

Jules it's no fun at all is it? I do hope you all recover quickly.

The OH called me home early from work on Monday as Isabelle wasnt at all well & very hot despite paracetamol.

Trip to doctors revealed her temp was 41.5 so he prescribed Tamiflu even though he believed she had a chest infection. She is still not 100% and now the OH is down with it too.

Both will bounce back im sure I just hope I dont get it! :anxious:
