chickencam
I am making a steak and kidney pudding today and we had a lovely onion soup yesterday. Last week we had chilli, a roast with steamed pudding made with mincemeat for pud, and soup. For the rest of the week I have a lasagna planned and probably more chilli, and more stodgy puddings and custard.
Lavenders_Blue
Chilli, hearty soups (especially my family's legendary 'bowl of death' ) and lasagna are always cold weather favourites in our house. Egg and chips goes down a treat too come to think of it! Also chocolate, sweets, cakes and puddings are allowed because the extra calories are needed to help keep warm. Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
majorbloodnock
We've been making a fair amount of bread since the snow landed. Certainly the soups and stews have been high on the priority list too, especially to give something for the bread to soak up. Given the difficulty in getting out, I've mainly been looking in the freezer to see what's there, then making something up accordingly. Thai green curry, anyone? Breakfast has spoken for itself too, though. Porridge has had prime showing during the week, and the weekend heralded a monstrous cooked breakfast. One unexpected offshoot, though, is that all this enforced house arrest has meant I spent a fair bit of time in the kitchen with the kids letting them make some toffee, so we've currently got far more sweets than we need. Hey, ho....

chickencam
Me too, I can't wait for my puds to be cooked, I had to make 2 in the end because I only have 600ml pudding basins, so hopefully one of them might even turn out intact Well I can dream. I prefer them turned out than scooped from the basin.

You must enlighten us on 'The Bowl Of Death' It's not as horrific as it sounds! It was a dish created to fill hungry boys' tummies (my brothers) and is basically a stodge-fest. Any vegetables you fancy are shredded and added to a slow cooker with stock, herbs, tinned tomatoes, seasoning and lentils. Root veg are best and there is usually plenty of potato. Chuck in onion, garlic and leeks if you fancy it. Once it's bubbled away for a good few hours, pasta is chucked in and cooked through. We generally serve it with plenty of grated cheese, a swirl of cream and cooked bacon for those who fancy it. Serve with plenty of bread! Apparently the name came from a friend of my mum's who also had a family 'boy-filler' recipe known as 'the ball of death'. From then on our hearty soup became known as the bowl of death! Daphne
Anything sticky, fatty and warming! This includes some confit sausages from France (ie sausages, cooked and then stored in a jar of fat. You remove them from the fat and cook them again) which we never dared open before! The thing I'm finding is that I have to eat very regularly and much earlier than I would normally. Patricia W
Butternut squash soup with chilli and ginger has become a favourite. Jamie Oliver's chili from his new America cookbook is highly recommended! And lots of stodgy puds... in fact everything I really shouldn't be eating! Sunshine
We are having macoroni cheese for tea which is one of my favorites, along with anything with mashed potato-mince, braised steak, chicken thighs. Also really like veggie pasta bake. One of the best things about this time of year is the stews etc that just don't feel right in the summer. Seagazer
I've been cooking stews etc and today I made a curried parsnip soup (apparently too spicy for ES who is off work with a rotten cold ). I've got some butternut squash from my box so that will be another soup later in the week. We don't really do puddings in this house, especially not now I'm back exercising! I am going to make some meringue nests tomorrow for YS to have with the home-made ice-cream left in the freezer. If I get some decent sized apples in this weeks box then I think I will make some baked apples - I can pretend its healthy because its fruit

chickencam
I like my porridge made with water then with milk around the edges and a spoonful of honey from my Dad's bees, yum My steak and kidney pud was a great success we only ate one of them so one will go in the freezer for another day Thanks for reminding me about macaroni cheese it's been a while but on the list for next week. Fish pie tomorrow
majorbloodnock
Ah, steak and kidney pud. Food of the Gods. I needed to rustle up something quick last night, and had a cauliflower sitting around not being eaten, so resorted to a good old cauliflower cheese. I fried some chopped onion and chopped green pepper in the butter first before adding the flour and milk, then added a teaspoon of grainy mustard in with the cheese afterwards and I didn't get a look in; they ate the lot. kerryegg
Housebound and just eating too much really. Neighbour brought us an emergency supply of chocolate yesterday. Otherwise could manage for weeks from the freezer and cupboards. Need to get out soon. Have read loads of books and given up on daytime TV. Have even finished the ironing. docsquid
Lots of lovely soups with home-made bread rolls. We get an organic vegbox and there are lots of soupworthy veg in there, so it has been easy to rattle off soup as required - swede, turnip, leek, potato, parsnip and carrot with butternut squash - lovely! Otherwise I'm tending to do casseroles in the evening, as there is something warming about oven-cooked food.
Daphne
Yes, I'm with you on that one - my favourite is one pot cooking in the oven. Tonight its cut up whatever veg I can find, roasted in oil with a bit of spicy seasoning and some chicken thighs, tho I could do without the meat and just gorge on those fat juicy potatoes and sweet potatoes! I will put something green on the plate as well so I don't feel totally unhealthy.

bluekarin
Stews, Lancashire hot pot, curry's, chilli's, cooked brekkie for lunch at the weekend, baked potatoes, apple strudel, porridge (made with milk, pinch of salt and then once served, a nice ring of cold milk and a good sprinkle dark brown sugar on top yummmm). It is the right weather for this type of rib sticking food. And lots of hot chocolates, with the occasional dash of brandy And maybe a few too many biscuits Well, I was so good at Christmas
chickencam
Made a yummy fish pie last night, but I don't want to think of the calories, i used up half a pot of double cream in the sauce and 50g of butter, it was lovely though. Lasagna here tonight
