Griffin
Last Tuesday I tripped and whacked my foot heavily into my dogs bed. It's a big plastic bed which had two sleeping dogs in it making it even heavier. It left my little toe on my left foot looking as if it was dislocated. It had moved about a centimetre out and was twisted around. After loudly exclaiming a few choice words, crying a lot and hopping about a bit, Mr Griffin took me to the minor injuries unit in Witney. There they xrayed my foot which showed I'd broken my little toe. I had gas & air while my toe was wrenched back into place again, strapped up and another xray taken to see if it was in the right place. Two nurses were looking at the new xray, one said it didn't look any different to the first one and the other said yes it did. I didn't see this xray so I couldn't say who was right. But as they were unsure and as it was quite a spectacular break they sent me to the trauma unit in Oxford the next day. The doctor there didn't look at my foot, only looked at the first xray and offered general advice and painkillers. On Wednesday when I removed the dressings for the first time so that I could go in the bath I could see for myself my toe still looked out of place. A week has passed, the swelling is still so great under my foot on that side that I still cannot put my foot flat on the ground. My toe is still out of place, infact it looks as wonky as it did when I first hit it. I keep getting weird pains in it, it's hard to describe but a cross between numbness and pins & needles and it makes me feel light headed and sick. I cannot move it at all. I feel like such a pain to everyone, I can't drive so the kids are stuck here and bored, I've cancelled all the plans I'd made for days out etc because I can't walk very well on my crutches, Mr Griffin took three days off work to wait on me hand and foot so that I didn't have to move at all and this week the kids are helping me out. I think his milk of human kindness has ran out, it's just a toe afterall Anyway, I've persuaded him to leave work early tonight to take me to the doctors to see what they say about my toe. I'm worried I'll get sent back to Oxford where they'll re-set it back where it ought to be and I'll be back to square one. Am I being a big baby or is this normal for a broken toe? Chickvic
When my DH broke a toe (slipped down a step) his toe was still in the same place it just went black and purple. I would definitely go and get yours checked out again, sounds like it's not in the right place. The numbness/pins and needles sounds like a circulation problem. Hope it gets sorted soon! Cinnamon
I have - when my tumble drier was out in the garage & moved the wash basket from the work top & dislodged a mallet which landed on my third toe, breaking it & bruising the 2 either side. It was AGONY I went to A&E, had to walk to X-Ray,where I was told that they couldn't do anything to it anyhow,so I had to just let it heal. It took ages,& walking was a problem, especially stairs,as the bending of the toe was awfully painful. It was swollen for ages too,& I got the weird pains too, that made me feel nauseous. It still looks lumpy now that it has healed & the toe sort of bends more than the others. I feel your pain..........................
LisaP
I have, big toe on my right foot and it was agony too. I went to the minor injuries unit where a doctor glanced at it, said "yes, it's probably broken but we don't do anything about it even if it is" The nurse took pity on me and put a tubular bandage on my foot upto my knee - just like a toeless sock and of no use at all The whole underside of the top half of my foot was black and blue and very swollen. This was back in 1989 and fortunately I didn't have my children then, because it was very incapacitating. I feel for you, especially as it has happened now in the school holidays which is very awkward and because I know how much it hurts. I would however, recommend you get it sorted out properly now because as I've said, I did mine just over 20 years ago and I now have constant pain in it and have a big lump where my toe joins my foot, which I don't think would have happened had it been treated Sending you hugs for the pain and hope you can get it sorted properly. bluekarin
My ED broke her toe when my DS friend stepped on her foot. It was the toe next to her big toe and it never healed straight, but we didn't do anything about it as, apart from it being broken, there was nothing wrong with it. I broke my little toe by catching it on a door frame. Mine was black all down the side of my foot for about a week, swollen to the point I couldn't wear any shoes on my right foot, but healed fine. Your foot doesn't sound right to me, and I would get it checked out again. Especially if the two nurses were unsure. If it needs to be reset, then so be it, and at least you'll be on the mend. Better to be a pain to the hospital than be in pain yourself. Good luck!
Sageandonion
Ouch poor you . I've never broken a toe, but broke 3 fingers on my right hand two years ago. At the time the pain was worse than childbirth. From memory the swelling and bruising lasted weeks. I remember going into the office with my 'sick note' ( I couldn't write and need to all day for my job) just after the plaster cast had been removed and the secretary saying my hand looked like something on a mortuary slab! I would definitely go back to the hospital and get them to look at it again. Better to be safe than sorry, you don't want it setting in the wrong position. Good luck, hope it improves soon. Looney
Ouch! I agree that you should get it looked at again. If you are worried it is wonky it may mean you have future problems with getting shoes to fit so it is important that you get it checked out. I have broken two toes, but I broke them from the last joint in the toe rather than at the knuckle end if that makes any sense I broke each one on a separate occasion but in exactly the same way...getting into the bath I caught my toe in the bath handle which meant the foot carried on toward the bath but the toe didn't Doing it once was bad enough, but twice....what a wally! Hens@HalfMoonLane
I broke my little toe year ago, caught it on something and it snapped, yes it was very painful and I hobbled for weeks.
The Dogmother
I've broken my right little toe twice (talk about stoopid ) It hurt a bit but was mightily inconvenient One day I will learn... keep away from doors and horses feet!
Griffin
Back from my latest trip to the John Radcliffe hospital My GP sent me straight there for another xray. I wanted to wait until the morning because I was supposed to work this evening but he wouldn't let me! So we came back home, rounded up all the kids and have spent the evening in A&E Todays xray shows that it is healing but my strapping technique needs improving. I need to get the toe strapped in a better position and keep it strapped for six weeks. Whatever it looks like at the end is what I'm stuck with. The tingling and numbness is just nerve damage from the allmighty wallop it took and will go eventually. The reason I can't move it is because the break is so far down towards my foot but I should eventually be able to move it. I'm so bored with it now There is only so much sitting around drinking tea and eating biscuits that even I can do
Goldstar
You poor thing. I dont think I have broken a toe but I have given it a go (not on purpose). A few weeks a go I hit my little toe on something (I cant even remember what it was) then the next day I did it again and had a big bruise where my toe joined my foot. Just as it heeled I smacked it again twice in the same position. It was very painful and I couldnt walk properly for a few days. I think you were right to go back to the GP. Hopefully it will heal well and the pain will soon go. Just think about the amount of chicken watching you can do whist sitting and drinking your tea. Chickvic
Glad it just required new strapping and that the tingling/numbness is nothing more serious. Hopefully it will feel much better soon.
Tiggy
no Ive not managed to do that, but it s sounds painful, hope you are better soon

I broke mine the other week. Never broken anything before, doc taped it up, but I wanted to know, is it safe to change own dressing myself? Cause Doc said to me after strapping it, see you in 6wks. otherwise it will be on there all that time. Just wondered?
Chucky Mama
DD dramatically dislocated her toe on Friday. We managed to pop it back in fairly easily despite it being at a right angle. She was hysterical...with laughter throughout. We have strapped it to the next toe and it is doing very well. She changes it herself after a bath (she is 14). It is quite straightforward. I don't know how complicated your dressing is but I can't imagine it is that difficult.

They may say it's Ok to do it yourself, or they prefer you to go to the surgery and have it done by the nurse.
Griffin
I've been changing it myself, at least every day when I bath or shower, more often if it gets muddy A piece of gauze between my toes and sticky wrappy type stuff around them several times. I've found micropore tape gives it too much movement, my toes needed a lot of support. It's almost back where it should be. I still can't wear shoes though, I've worn nothing but flip-flops. Even slippers make it hurt but I can wear my Croc wellies!
CatieB
hi last year I broke the toe next to my little toe - I miraculously managed to break the same bone in two places a bit like parallel breaks by falling down the stairs. I was amazed by how long it took to get anywhere near back to normal. I remained in no shoes and then onto comfy shoes for weeks (very embarrassing in my job where dark suits required) there was no way I could get in any normal shoes and wore a large pair of boat like slip ons. I think it was 8 weeks before I was able to feel it was making progress and getting back to normal. I hobbled all that time as I couldn't get on with the crutches -so much so that someone professional pointed out that if I carried on they were worried I would damage my hip. Anyway the good news is that it has returned to normal despite all that. So keep smiling and looking after it.
Mollie333
I broke two toes on my right foot by walking into a wall. ( yes i know I'm stupid ) the day before i was supposed to walk acres of land to pick a Shetland pony. Ouch!
sadietoo
I managed to whack my toe last year and it was at a funny angle so I think I may have broken it. It was extremely swollen and black and blue for a while certainly, but I was under the impression that there is no treatment for broken toes other than waiting for it to heal. I now wish I'd gone to the docs with it because if I walk too far it is still the first part of my foot to complain... and I can't wear high heels for long without it hurting..so my advice is get it checked out so that it heals as well as possible. FoxFighters
I've never broken a toe but my mum has. She was hoovering and something was stuck in the hoover so she kicked it- well, tried to. She actually kicked the door.
Valkyrie
Not sure if I broke one of my little toes. I didn't bother to have it checked out because they can't really do anything anyway. It took months and months to heal - didn't help when I caught it again and set it all back to square one - having a very high pain threshold I can say this blinking well hurt a lot! The nail even grew rather oddly - seemed to have 2 at the same time. One year on and it doesn't hurt now and the nail has also decided to behave at long last. It does have a strange little area to the inside that is slightly raised, but I don't think it's bone tissue - just where my shoes now rub where they didn't before. Perhaps I didn't and just damaged the nail. Either way "ouch" was definitely not the word used at either time!
