Lesley
I've never had much success growing a really large pumpkin but the weather seems to have been right this year. We found this lurking next to the courgettes........ We cut some leaves back - it's about 15" across already!
SJChick
Well done! Do you have a local show you could enter it for in the giant vegetable section? It might win.
Lesley
There is a local show at the beginning of September
SJChick
Would love to hear how you get on if you do enter. We try and enter our local show every year just for a laugh, ours is in September too!
Lesley
The one I always entered, and won lots of cups in, had to close and we haven't entered any others since we moved here, perhaps it's about time I had another go. I've never entered a 'biggest' class before.
Christian
Impressive Lesley. Start feeding it with beer now.
Lesley
Impressive Lesley. Start feeding it with beer now. Are you mad!! can you imagine OH letting his decent beer go to a pumpkin There isn't a 'biggest' class in the local show - in fact all the classes were pretty uninspiring - and the pumpkin seems to be doing well enough on its own.......I'll leave it to get on with it, at least when I do get round to using it for Bonfire Night the pumpkin I take out should taste of something. Valkyrie
Wow it looks really good. My own butternuts are doing diddley squat. We've had flowers but no fruit at all. In fact it's been a rubbish year so far apart from the tomatoes.

Lewis
What a great surprise! Similar thing has happend with out courgettes... 4 in grow bags have been quite rubbish. Dumped the other 2 plants in the ground and left them, not even bothered to water them and its huge! Don't know when its too big or becomes a marrow, but I guess now ... not that I eat them
Lesley
The pumpkin weighed in at 52 lbs !!!! OH's 50lb fishing scales couldn't cope so we had to get him to stand on the scales with the pumpkin. I'm still carving out the innards.......it took me an hour to cut and remove the lid
Lewis
I assume you got a photo?! 8)
Lesley
Just a few! - OH is still recovering from staggering in to the scales when he thought he was going straight to the kitchen I'll post photos when I've finished carving it......... We also found enormous mangel worzels at the little nursery - they were always used to make lanterns before pumpkins became more popular. We bought two and made a start on one.
