ali-s
I got my first pair of specs today. Only need them for reading and close work. They make me feel a bit dizzy if I look up and around about. I was border line when I had my eyes tested and the optician said I could either have glasses or not bother for the time being, I chose to have a pair. Oh, what a difference I can read the posts here with ease. Threaded a needle first time and can read the teeney weeney print on the backs of packets and jars. Wolfie
Join the club! Just watch those pesky chickens - mine have been known to have a peck at the frames - um, nice shiney These are the same critters who ate one of my 22 carat ear-rings. Don't you just love 'em? JillM
The slight dizzyness that comes when you move your head will soon fade. I never regretted getting my glasses at 12, and the first thing I noticed was the pointing on the building across the street from the optician - clear as day! Your chickens will have much more difficulty trying to outwit you now

coco
I got my first pair this week too. I can read the yellow pages now and the ads in the free paper. At least I might stop phoning the wrong number now because I couldn't see it properly.
chickenNutter
ali-s, can I hazard a guess that you are 40-something? Apparently it hits us all at that age! Even if like me, you have always had 20/20 vision. I got mine about 6 months ago. I try not to use them unless I am struggling, and I must admit, it is mainly in the kitchen I use mine, all those cooking instructions in teeny font and the backs of vitamin bottles written in pixie font. Don't you just hate the ageing process

Ain't Nobody Here
Egluntyne, you're terrible . Coincidentally, I'm off to get my eyes tested next Wednesday. I have a friend who works in the eye hospital and she's always nagging me to get my "pressures tested" whatever that means . Regular eye examinations are very important and not just for issues with sight apparently.
Snowy
Yes they also do an eye health check at the opticians and can pick up signs of high blood pressure and raised cholesterol! All very clever
ali-s
Chickennutter I will soon be 47 , How did that happen . Egluntine I could read that word wearing my specs I won't be wearing my specs out and about, just for reading. The optician said my distance sight is very good for my age I chose two pairs of glasses, which was an offer from Boots the Opticians. My first choice of frame is out of stock at the moment , hopefully they will be in stock next week. Oh, and when I am wearing my specs I am the spitting image of my grandma when she was in her forties and wearing specs
Seagazer
@ Egluntyne. I'm short sighted and I now fear that I've gone the other way too. I don't know why that just doesn't balance out bad eyesight but it doesn't. Looks like its varifocals next for me.
Ain't Nobody Here
Coincidentally as we're talking about eye tests, this was in my local paper yesterday. (Mum of two nearly cancelled her eye appointment as it was her daughter's 18th but didn't - a huge tumour was found and her sight saved. She had been getting headaches & blurred vision but hadn't realised how serious it was.)
Blackrocksrock
Welcome to the getting older club! - I comes with age along with the things they dont tell you about- creaky knees and hairy chin!!! to name a couple! - I buy the cheapos to leave in different rooms - poundland do them and they are fine for reading after you have your presc for one pair and can see what you need!. Saves loads of money! Often buy mine on presc from glasses direct online - they are great!
Calamity Jane
Last time I had my eyes check my optician took a picture of the back of my eye, it was fascinating, she explained all the bits to me and explained that in the future she would use this as a comparison to any changes that occur. Wow. So weird to sit and look at the inside of yourself, in full colour !

Lucky lady to have had it caught.
The Dogmother
Is anyone else singing Johnny Nash's "I can see clearly now the rain has gone...."? Nope? just me being old then..... I am long sighted and wear glasses for screen work and anything else close, although am fast careering towards bifocals I have my eyes tested free every 6 months as Glaucoma is rampant in my family history. Luckily it is treatable now and they can laser the drainage canals to release the pressure, but I have to keep a close watch on it.
goodinparts
Not just you at all Clare - the moment I saw the title I was away... I'm another who has been short sighted (worn contacts) for years....but had to abandon them in favour of glasses, because I could take the glasses OFF to read.......but now have the delightful situation of needing distance glasses AND reading glasses (no variafocals for me, as one of my eyes is too "Ooops, word censored!"py to make it work, apparently) And it all started at 45...almost to the day. Very ageing.......
The Dogmother
we must be a similar age Click and enjoy Sorry, back to eyesight.......
stehaggan
Congrats on seeing clear I wore glasses from the age of 11 specsavers specials eugh the pictures I have to hide . It's very important to have regular check ups my eyes were worse each time I went back and I had milk bottles by the time I was 21. Once I went to vision express in the Trafford centre and got told I had blood vessels growing over my lenses and would be blind by the time I was 20 - scary stuff. But luckily that wasn't to be - I was just still drunk from the night before so my eyes were all bloodshot lol. Vanity took the better of me and I had my eyes lasered - 6 years ago now wow so now I just have old age to look forward to again to have another visit to specsavers
ali-s
Spent a lovely afternoon yesterday doing some cross stitching on an apron. Needle threaded no problem and I could see where the stitches were meant to go. My earlier efforts without my glasses looks a bit rough and ready. In the evening I read with just the table lamp on. Before glasses I needed both the table lamp and the main light on to have a chance of reading the words on the page.
sadietoo
Yes they also do an eye health check at the opticians and can pick up signs of high blood pressure and raised cholesterol! All very clever When my kids were small I worked at an opticians as the oldest Saturday girl in town One of the opticians there also diagnosed a brain tumour, which was at that point entirely symptomless, and diabetes. My optician recommended I get my cholesterol checked but i'm dithering becauseI think the research for the whole cholesterol thing is flawed, and am not prepared to take statins until I am otherwise convinced.......Still at least if I keel over, lots of people get to tell me I told you so
JillM
You might not even need statins if you can increase your exercise and improve your diet It's worth getting it checked just so you know .
