The Dogmother
I had one of those moments last night when all the work over the years seems worthwhile; mindful of being a lone parent, I have always taught Rosie the basics of first aid, in case I had an accident, fall or she couldn't wake me up. From an early age she knew her address and how to call for an ambulance in an emergency, how to get someone into the recovery position, and I taught her other bits as time went on. She's added to this on her lifeguard training too. Yesterday, one of her teachers (who is epileptic but has never had a seizure in class) started fitting in their lesson. Rosie was near the front and at first she thought that he was messing about as he's a bit of a joker, but she quickly realised what was wrong and moved the furniture out of the way, sent two boys off to find another teacher and call for an ambulance. She knelt down beside Mr C and reassured him while older children were crowded around outside the classroom and making cruel and insensitive comments about him. We had a letter from the VP at school explaining the situation and commending Rosie for her calmness and efficiency in the situation. I have emailed back to thank him, and have suggested that they might want to invite either paramedics or the Red Cross in to teach the children what to do should such an incident happen again; I am always at a loss to understand why basic first aid isn't part of the national curriculum. Well done Rosie, I am very proud of you *grins*
craftyhunnypie
Awww bless her! You should indeed be truly proud of her.... very well done Rosie! Rosie deserves a real treat for that - what a wonderful daughter to have! Emma.x
Bramble
Yay, well done Rosie, keeps calm and knows EXACTLY what to do in a crisis, clever girl, she will go far!!!
Cinnamon
You have ever right to be proud You are also quite right that basic first aid should be part of the curriculum - it has as much importance as many of the other things they are taught
Willow
Well done Rosie Everyone should know basic first aid, we do a first aid session with our cub scouts every term in the hopes that if they ever need it they have the basics. I've never really needed mine except for minor cuts and burns so I hope in a more serious situation I would remember what to do. We did have a situation on holiday last year where a lady collapsed and seemed to be fitting whilst we were waiting for the coach for the airport and a surgeon and his gp wife took charge. He had her dragged over to between a tree and a fence to give her privacy which meant she couldn't be put into the recovery position or monitored very well Fortunately a Greek doctor turned up very quickly on the back of a motorbike and he took control of the situation, first got her moved to where he could see her, then off in an ambulance to be rehydrated and back in time to get the plane home. ClaireG
Well done Rosie I agree, basic first aid should be taught to all.

The Dogmother
Thank you, she wanted to talk about it last night and we discussed what had happened. When she's older, I will enrol her on a first aid course; I've always held a certificate and the skills have been useful countless times. I'd recommend it to anyone. lillybettybabs
Well done Rosie I did basic first aid in the guides which have come in handy, I do think it's a good idea. Well done mum too!
bluekarin
Well done Rosie! And the other insensitive kids. I remember doing a brief first aid course at secondary school., but thinking about it, neither of my secondary school kids have done one. Should be part of the curriculum. The Dogmother
In countries where they teach basic CPR as part of the curriculum (I understand that the US is one of these) there is a far greater chance of people surviving a heart attack... so it does work. Both the Red Cross and St Johns do junior courses.

Lavenders_Blue
Well done Rosie! Knowing the principles of first aid is one thing, but being able to remain calm and remember what you need to do when a situation arises is another thing entirely - good on her for handling it so well And shame on the other students. chickencam
Well Done Rosie I too think that first aid should be taught in schools as a matter of course. My family and I did a St Johns Ambulance emergency first aid course a couple of months ago, it was a course specifically designed for family groups and it was excellent, we now all hold a certificate and will be renewing it regularly. I also think that it should be an automatic part of Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, they have to have a first aid kit per group but get no training on ho w to use it regardless of the fact that the groups spend long periods on their own often in rugged terrain. Seagazer
Well done Rosie I did a basic first aid course when I started my childminding course which was quite handy. OH has done one recently as he's a marshall at the TT races. I'm going this year but I'm just that "Ooops, word censored!"ody crashes (at all) or near us. TheGirlsMum
Well done Rosie and yes you should be proud of her as said its not always easy to take control infront of your peers. I'm another that agrees that first aid should be taught in schools, is there anything we can do about this?
The Dogmother
I don't know, perhaps write to your educational authority? I've had an email back from the VP, he's going to look into it being included in PSHE, so perhaps they will.
Space Chick
Whenever I have met Rosie she has appeared to me as being a sensible, mature, lovely level headed girl... This confirms it Well done Rosie, and well done Claret she is a credit to your parenting
