stehaggan
We was at the allotment today cleaning out the eglu amongst other jobs so we let the chicks into the WIR whilst the older girls were outside in their omlet netting. I was paining a trelice and stu topping up a feeder, next minute the hens were screaming and two jumped out of the netting and there was a huge dog chasing one of the legbars. She was running for her life - across 3 plots, the dog walker nowhere to be seen, i managed to drag the dog off and then the owner appeared to grab the dog. He then vanished and left a lady with us who just said "its not even our dog" it turns out this man is the brother of a plot holder, the man nor the plot holder even came over to see how she was, the woman stayed and said "we'll see you right" ASIF that makes it OK. I took her back over to the run, blood was pouring from inside her mouth and she was choking on it. She has one tail feather left, after holding her a few minutes i put her on the ground to see if she could stand then notice a huge (approx 2 inch) gash to the left of her top tail part bleeding. We have brought her home and cleaned the wound and shes had a bit of food and is now in the spare room in a rollaway nest box and makeshift run. Hopefully she will make it through but I know lots don't. I am really really angry, dogs are allowed on the site but HAVE to be kept on the lead. Someone said just "pull her neck" which is disgusting in my opinion and i know i will get a lot of "she's only a chicken" but if thats the case I might just get the saw to that dogs tail "because its only a dog!!" the mentality of some people! I will be reporting this to the council, it is the plotholders responsibility for their visitors and I am disgusted he nor the brother even came over. I just think people should have the same decent values that we would have in such a situation but clearly not!.
Ain't Nobody Here
How awful . I hope your little girl pulls through . I hope those blokes make some attempt at an apology/explanation, not that it'll help much .
pips_pekins
So awful. The dog was only doing what was natural for a dog. What a shame the men didn't attempt to do what would be natural to the rest of us and at least attempt to apologise for being the cause of so much distress. I hope your girl has been ok through the night.
Egluntyne
Goodness. Sorry to hear it. I hope 'We'll see you right' means 'of course, as this is entirely our fault, we will pay for all treatment'.
CharLeila
So how is she? Did she make it through the night? I hope so! Have you heard anything from the bloke? I don't understand why some people think chickens aren't pets? Makes me angry, one of my girls passed away recently and someone asked if I was going to eat her? I replied by asking if he would eat his dog when that dies?
stehaggan
she's still with us x she was out of the nest box this morning when I woke up and had had some breakfast as it was all over the cage and is doing normal poos. She's very quiet compared to normal - she's not made a sound but shes a lot different than when I put her to bed. I gave her some yoghurt this morning which she demolished which is a good sign and have put some anti bac spray on her. We are goin to drive to happy chicks in Blackpool toget sole gentian violet spray as I have heard it's the best so fingers crossed she will be ok. Just trying to keep her in the calm and quiet so she doesn't get stressed and her shock wears off. My dog is wondering who has moved into his room bless him but I am keeping him well away. Not heard a thing from the person, I am honestly shocked that someone couldn't care leas like that- if my dog I'd that I think I would not be able to apologise enough. I don't blame the dog it's justa natural instinct but the owner is reckless and is to blame and clearly doesn't care less and that's what annoys me. Cinnamon
Terrible. Just a thought - I know on my local allotments, non allotment owners are not allowed & nor are dogs....it is classed as trespass. Might be worth looking in to.
Tutti Frutti
Hope she's continuing to improve Ste, what a shocking and horrific thing to happen I'd be hopping mad too But what a brave little girl, these little ladies can be so fragile and yet tough little fighters. You're doing both well, keep up the good work

sparkysmum
What a terrible thing to happen, just awful Don't understand such an irresponsible attitude. Hope your girl pulls through and if you can face it pass any vet bills to the owner. Fingers crossed for her. Alli xx
Redwing
Agree that the dog should gave been on a lead but the chicken should have been behind the netting It's worth getting some wings clipped or looking at beefing up the netting. Any number of things could cause an escapee otherwise - it could have easily been a fox and in that case there would be no one to blame
scarlettohara
I would get a course of antibiotics as well to be on the safe side, if she is quiet now it may be infection setting in - dogs mouths aren't particularly hygienic
johnandkymberley
How horrible, thank god your henny penny is showing some sign of recovery. as for the owners, i would report to them to everybody i could. actually i read in my chicken book the other day (omg how weird h2b and i were taking about dog attacks and the legislation that covers hens!)the book is hens in the garden, eggs in the kitchen by charlotte popescu and is says "you can claim damages from the dog owner if you know who it is, under the animals act 1971 - an act to make provision with respect to civil liability for damage done by animals and with respect to the protection of livestock from dogs and for purposes connected with those matters" - this replaces the dogs ammendment act 1928, injury to cattle or poultry. I hope this helps in anyway? if anyone backs you down least you have some legislation to throw at them, which is always handy!!! let us know how your henny is and if there are any updates xxx
