Chickendoodle
I am in my early 50's, eat a healthy diet, don't snack or drink and take regular exercise. For the past 8 weeks I have increased my activity level a bit , mainly to keep fit and make sure I am supple and mobile. I do 30mins at the gym twice a week, a 30 min Zumba/gym class, a 1 hour jazz dance and 1 hour tap class and at the weekend an hour or so brisk walk with the dogs each day. Prior to 8 weeks ago I was still very active but without the gym/zumba. So I am doing something active every day and I was feeling really good about myself. I would like to be half a stone lighter though (I am a size 14) Now my dilemma is this. My DD had borrowed my bathroom scales and while I didn't have them I didn't think about my weight at all as I know that what I was doing was keeping me fit. I felt like I ought to be losing weight and I felt really good about myself. She gave them back to me last week and I have not lost an ounce which has made me feel quite depressed. (I don't really go for the "muscle weighs more than fat" argument as my clothes feel the same so I know I have not changed shape) So, I have gone from feeling good to feeling down which I know is absolutely ridiculous. I feel that I ought not to throw away the bathroom scales as a big part of me thinks that I should know what I weigh all of the time. Why???? Do I need to. Is anyone else as illogical as this. Just not weighing myself is not an option as I can feel them making me weigh myself each day - yes I know that I shouldn't weigh myself each day, but the scales make me do it. Snowy
I agree! When the battery died in my electronic ones I didn't replace it so haven't had any bathroom scales for ages now. I occasionally weight myself at work as we have scales there, so haven't gone completely cold turkey
Ain't Nobody Here
I'm much the same, do a lot of exercise (although I don't eat as healthily as you ) but don't seem to lose weight. My electronic scales are crazy though, they weigh you lighter every time you step on them (I mean at the same time, not after a while). I tend to believe the last measurement which is always the lightest . Now though, I've given up and don't stand on them at all as I don't think I can trust them. I would go cold turkey if I were you .
Chickendoodle
The daft thing is I know that I am being completely stupid but it can depress me all day! Cold turkey it is then, or maybe I could just keep them as I would feel so much better if I weighed less............
The Dogmother
I've never had any scales, ditch them and just go by how your clothes fit
yvonne
I agree, I only care about how I feel and look, not what I weigh, after all being toned and a bit larger is better than skinny and scrawny.
ali-s
We had bathroom scales given as a wedding present 22 years ago. I never took them out of the box and sent them to the charity shop. If my clothes are feeling a little snug I cut down on the crisps and chocolate for a wee while. I sometimes weigh myself on the floor standing meat scales at work because some of the other women are weighing themselves. The readout is in KG's though which means nothing to me so I am none the wiser
Blackrocksrock
I weigh myself on the dog walk on scales at work - I have lost 13kg in the last 16 weeks and the dog has lost 9.1kg in the same time - we are doing well but plateau for last 3 weeks for me and I am not a happy bunny but my clothes feel so much better than 4 weeks ago so must have converted to muscle rather than flab!! - still have a stone to lose! Olly
I haven't used my scales for ages, and I honestly have no idea how much I weigh - I went to see the nurse at my GP surgery yesterday and when she asked me I couldn't tell her! (She couldn't find the scales, so I still don't know! ) I did weigh myself a bit last year when I was doing the Harcombe Diet, but it didn't really tell me much, I already knew I was losing weight because my clothes were looser. If you feel good, and if you think you look good, then why worry!
patsylabrador
Ditch them.
Yorkshire Pudding
Get rid! I won't have them in the house, I refuse to get fixated by numbers - I know too many perfectly healthy people who spent all their time agonising over losing just a little more weight, and being upset if they put a little bit on. chickencam
Ditch them. Mine tell me a completely different weight depending where I put them on the kitchen floor and in the bathroom upstairs they can be a stone different. All i know is that I am a size 14 and would rather be more comfortable in my clothes sometimes. My weight seems the same but my jeans fit better at the moment and that makes me happy. Mercedes55
I have to confess to being a bit obsessed with what I weigh and do find myself having a weigh in every Friday morning. I can see a lot of reasons why it's good to ditch the scales, but I also know how easy it is to put on weight and not be aware of it until you weigh yourself. I am not the most active of people, I will confess that right away. I have a treadmill but after owning it for a few years I don't use it much now. I don't take the dog for a walk as she pulls too much. I don't really enjoy going out walking as I find it boring and if I need to go anywhere then it's by car. The only exercise I get is doing housework and gardening. I am 56 and weigh the same as I did when I was 17, which is 7st 2lbs, although my ideal weight is 7st and if I put on any more than 3lbs over that then I cut down on what I eat. On the other hand my daughter in law goes to the gym about 4 times a week and does some really energetic classes, yet she finds it really hard to get below 10st. Not sure there is an easy answer

squiffs
Last time I weighed 7 stone I was probably still in primary school.
Mercedes55
People assume because you are 7st you either don't eat much or you are very thin. I'm only 5ft, so any heavier and it really shows. Plus I suffer badly from anxiety and I swear I burn up tons of calories just through being anxious. If I could swap being anxious and be 'normal' but overweight it would be a no brainer
squiffs
Heh, no one's attacking you. I also suffer from anxiety, badly, I'm medicated for it, (and a tonne of other stuff, for a whole other thread), it does nothing for my calorie-burning though! No sorry I didn't mean to imply that anyone was, just sometimes I get fed up of people thinking that being slim is the key to being happy which it isn't. Sorry to hear you suffer with anxiety too, not a lot of fun is it

My OH is the same as you, very slight, but he's trying to gain weight and really struggling, he drinks a whole milk mixed protein shake right before bed so it sits on him. EURGH. whoopsie
I would agree with the sentiment 'Ditch Them. I've never had scales in the house and though I will occasionally weigh myself at work, it's amazing how different scales in different places give you different results. I am more concerned with how I feel, rather than how much I weigh, and how my clothes fit.
AJuff
I weigh myself every Saturday morning just to check I'm doing ok. I'd like to loose a little bit of weight but as long as I don't go over my personal top weight I'm ok. I do like to know though!
Lavenders_Blue
I also like to weigh myself, but seem able not to get obsessive about it. I probably only hop on the scales a couple of times a month. Whilst generally it's a good idea to go by the fit of your clothes, do find that weight can easily creep on without me noticing - my jeans still do up so I don't notice, yet I could have put 1/2 stone on. Keeping an eye on my weight helps me realise when I need to cut down on the cake and step up the exercise. Different things work for different people though and if you find you're getting obsessive about weighing yourself you might be better off ditching the scales altogether.
