How to stop Chryssie hopping down the street!!

Recommended Posts

Oh my days, today Chryssie was found up the pavement clucking away at herself! the fence is about 4 and a half foot and we have checked the garden for other ways out and it has got to be the fence. and we found a lump of chicken poo on it! So i am thinking some of those plastic spike strips, like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Prikka-Strip-Fence-Spikes-Anti-Intruder-1-Metre-/230602694410?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item7b67fb771d just one strip of spikes though not 3, i think once she see's something like this she wont bother again but i just want it to stop! the gate is metal btw, ideas appreciated! x

I used prikka strips earlier this year when I was looking after some hens for a friend. One of them found she could jump on top of the ark which was fine until she worked out it was only a short flap to the fence and over into the neighbours' garden

Here she is up on top of the ark with another of the hens, who thankfully never made it over the fence.

Clipping her wing made no difference so we attached prikka strips along the apex of the ark to stop her jumping on top of it. It worked brilliantly.

Please don't use netting. My neighbours chicken got caught up in netting, broke her hip and whilst she lay there the others ate her.

I have a morbid fear of netting now and would avoid it at al costs

Netting is OK if you are around to rescue them though isn't it? Mine have a netted off area to roam in when we are around to fox watch. My dog put her head through once and got stuck 'cos of her big ears, she didn't panic she just stood there with her head and tail down waiting to be rescued and the hens didn't go and peck her either while she was captive in this position.

If your gate is only 4 and a half feet high, then it's unlikely that prika would stop them as they can just fly straight over that height :?

We have a concrete slab fence at the bottom of our garden. It's the same height as your metal gate. We used cable ties to attach a roll of 6' willow palisade to it. It looks much nicer than the concrete and is flimsy enough to deter them jumping onto it.

What is stopping you attaching something like that to your gate? Cable ties are very easy, go round and through most holes and can easily be cut off so are not permanent.

It was before I had chickens of my own. My neighbour had four and wanted to bring in two more, so he separated them with netting. This poor little thing, one of the newbies, got her feet tangled and in panicking and twisting she broke her hip and then just lay there. I looked over the fence as I liked to see his girls and two of them were pecking her round the vent and coming up with mouthfuls of flesh. My husband tried hosing them, nothing, so we scaled the fence, neighbour being out and rescued her, but she died during the night. Even when I was holding her and my husband was clipping the netting away, they were still trying to get at her, they were frenzied.

For a while it completely put me off chickens, but I did succumb and interestingly I now have her sister living with me as she was surplus to requirements next door. He only wants layers, I am grateful for one out of 4 laying
