Make up

Recommended Posts

I have never really been a woman for makeup. But I am going somewhere in a couple of weeks time where i want to scrub up a bit. So, was thinking about going and getting some foundation. I don't really want to pay much for it. So, was thinking about the likes of Rimmel etc. Now, how on earth am i going to know that i get the right colour??? I could just guess and get the palest as I am sure that would be about right..... advice please, its amount time i became a girl..

Right you HAVE to try Garnier BB cream - its like a super light foundation which just melts into your skin & leaves you looking all dewy & gorgeous.

I am totally hooked,as are both of my teenage daughters.

It is so easy to put on & looks really natural too.

It comes in just light & medium.....I am the light shade,as are my girls.

Honestly,I have never been so evangelical about a make-up product in my life before & I am a BIG make up fan - I even do make up product testing.

Nothing comes near this stuff :D

If you go to the Garnier site or the BB cream Facebook page, they will send you a sample too :P

I don't wear makeup very often, but even so I'd recommend investiingin a good foundation if you can. It's best to get someone to evaluate your skin for tone, type and age, so that they can recommend noth the correct colour for you, and the best type of foundation.

You can get excellent advice, including being taught how to apply it (brush, sponge, applicator, etc). , if you go to, say, a Bobbi Brown counter or a MAC counter. I seem to remember that you can actually pay for a session at MAC (probably the others too) and you get your money back if you make a purchase. I'm sure CLinique, YSL, etc are also fine, I just haven't personally used them.

If you definitely want something a bit cheaper, then you could try one of the counters at Boots - but probably best to go on a weekday, as the Saturday girls aren't usually as experienced at assessing suitability for different skin types and tones.

I would proceed with caution and get budget brands until you know what you like. I'd suggest you think about a tinted moisturiser rather than a foundation as it's less of a step. Add in a natural soft colour lipstick and some mascara and maybe leave it at that. If you do want foundation I found L'Oreal do a range of very natural light pale foundations. If you are pale you need to be particularly cautious not too get something too dark.

I suggest you go have a browse in Superdrug first, they have a good selection of budget make-up ranges and you won't be pounced on by an over made-up assistant keen to sell you a full range of products. I would be cautious about getting help from an assistant until you have more idea what works for you as you're likely to get talked into products you won't use again.

I fell in love with make-up early teens and have worn it ever since (ironically I am much more likely to go out without makeup now I'm heading towards 50 than when I was 15  )

i also use the Garnier BB (another Omlet reccommendation) and although I think I am past looking dewy and gorgeus it goes on lovely and makes a good base for the other slap if you want to put it on. I am very vain and put on the works and will till I cant see to do so or pop my clogs - without my face I feel naked.

I found (as someone who rarely wears makeup) that the difficulty with going to Boots or Superdrug and looking, is that the options are overwhelming. Choosing the right colour is bad enough, but then there are so many differnrt types of foundations, even within one range. Mousse? Cream? Matte? Minerals? Blah blah blah.

The BB cream sounds interesting as there are only 2 options (Thanks Sarah for suggesting that, I've requested a sample). Maybe that's a really simple solution?

I know what Patricia means about pushy assistants. I find I feel like I'm about 12 when I stand at makeup counters. Bobbi Brown (I went to the one in John Lewis in Reading) and MAC (House of Fraser in Reading) were the two places where I didn't feel like I was being pushed to buy something, In both cases, I felt (and this is just the experience I had, I can't guarantee it would be the same for you) that they took the time to find the right type of product for me.

Sold on the BB cream. I only wear make up when I wear contact lenses. I don't know why but I do feel less confident without my glasses on, especially about dark circles under my eyes. I only own brown eyeliner, a free mascara I got when L'oreal visited my school and a mousse foundation. The foundation's nearly run out though (it's lasted 4 years ) so I'll see how I like the BB cream :)

I used to use Body shop & Virgin Vie. These days I wear Avon Extra lasting . I like the finish it gives & it does last!

I'm wanting to get some of the Garnier BB - I'd need the medium I think.

If you go the posh makeup counters & show a real interest , they might give you some samples. It might be enough for your special 'do'.

You should change your make up regularly - especially your mascara. Make up harbours bacteria!!!

I cleanse, use a light moisturiser like Olay, wait for that to sink in then put 3 small blobs of BB on my fingers, then dot it all over my face. Then you just smooth it in. It has a serum in it,so its very silky & easy go apply.

Then I do the under eye roll on concealer thing & also blob that on to any blemish I have (plenty usually)

I finish it with my regular Clinique powder.

I have always found base hard to apply, but this stuff is so easy to blend that I reckon its hard to get it wrong.

It improves the skin too. My girls have been pimple free since changing from regular base to this.

I dread the time I can't find my year of birth - either cos I'm too old or my specs need changing  Good job we can laugh at ourselves - read somewhere that a smile is the best facelift so taken to beaming (only when relevant) waiting for someone to growl "what you grinning at?" Can't afford a face job sadly so going for better quality makeup to hide the lines etc. Anyone found anything good for dark shadows. I use the Garnier roll on under the eyes but have inherirted the family shadows.

I do not wear much make up and am very pale too. I found a good cheap product for dark shadows is an under eye concealer from Aldi. It is the pen sort not a stick and it seems to blend well. I tried it because I started to use Aldi's moisturiser following a report that it was as good as other creams. When the report came out...and you will laugh at this...I decided to do a test and each morning for 6 weeks I put my more expensive moisturiser on one side and my Aldi on the other side of my face. Then asked friends which side was best. Verdict - no difference, so I use the Aldi cream now :D
