Lesley
I've been making this for my Mum's 80th Birthday party tomorrow....... She didn't want '80' on it but I have got a really spectacularly tacky candle to go on it after she's had a photo call with it - I'll take the flowers off the top and replace them with a pink plastic flower which you light and the 8 petals open, each with a tiny candle on and it plays 'Happy Birthday'

Purplemaniacs
Wow that is beautiful, you are very talented. My cakes taste good but they never look beautiful. My Mum always said she didn't want to live to be 80 but when she reached that mile-stone she said 80 is pretty good. I hope you have a lovely day and happy birthday to your mum. ubereglu
That's beautiful Lesley. Will have to e-mail my sister a photo, as she's currently planning her wedding. My other sister has offered to make her wedding cake-mostly to return the favour for when she got married three years ago, when we helped her make the 180 odd chocolate cupcakes! Sheilaz
..............She didn't want '80' on it but I have got a really spectacularly tacky candle to go on it after she's had a photo call with it - I'll take the flowers off the top and replace them with a pink plastic flower which you light and the 8 petals open, each with a tiny candle on and it plays 'Happy Birthday' Brilliant! I hope you are all having a lovely day Lesley, and that your Mum enjoys being the birthday girl. Much as she says she doesn't want an age reminder, it is a milestone, and worthy of celebration and I'm sure the candle will bring lots of smiles. What a marvellous cake to make, it's fabulous, you've done her proud.
Lesley
Thank you for all you kind comments, I really enjoyed making it all. I'm very glad that my Mum has reached this milestone - 15 years ago, outwardly healthy and not overweight she had to have a quintuple heart bypass, she recovered very quickly because of her general health but it was scary at the time. We had a wonderful time and I have photos of the tacky candle - she loved it I'm glad the cake was ready early and I wasn't frazzled when I arrived at the hotel early to set the cake up, the manager we'd been dealing with for the last few months wasn't there....the person who was supposed to be handling it all didn't seem to know anything.....we overheard the receptionist telling him that the party was 12.30 instead of 11.30 There was nothing in the room at all, no tables put out, no cake table, no balloons. I was certainly frazzled by the time I'd chased up all that needed doing!

chickencam
Fabulous cake, happy birthday to your mum. My dad had a heart attack 8 years ago, never smoked or drank, and was very fit, he turns 70 in a couple of weeks, so this gives me great hope for him, he is in good health now. Lesley
Thank you ANH Chickencam, I know what you mean, it seems more worrying when a person has no obvious reasons for poor health, my Mum didn't drink or smoke either. When she was referred to rehab after her bypass she was only allowed to go once as there was nothing to change in her diet or lifestyle. It sounds as if your Dad has made a good recovery and will see many more birthdays. Here's the lovely candle! ...and four generations.... my grand-daughter, daughter, Mum and me. Lesley
Thank-you all I look at the photos and wonder why it took me so long to make and my house is very dusty I suppose I'd better do some housework now that every minute isn't spent wiring sugar leaves and flowers! Lauren has just had a bad bout of dislocations and is immobile again - she asked if there were any cupcakes left, she's had the last one which I was saving
