soapdragon
I have the feed stores own green wellies I wear them every single day in all weathers and they last. Usually come in at about £10. I think this shows that its not always worth paying the extra! I'm now of the opinion that I'll try the 'cheapies' first on the basis that, if they are comfy and last thats great but, if they don't then I havn't lost a lot! I suppose it depends on how individual's feel about 'labels' (this from someone who once did the school run in the pouring rain with an Asda carrier tied on as a rainhat as I couldn't find my hood ! Slummy Mummy status duly ensued !!) I think that sometimes the big labels get a bit complacent and rely on their reputation and maybe the quality slips a bit ? Eggasperated
My wellies usually split across the top of the foot where they bend when I crouch down. I currently have some green Dunlops that have been going for over a year but sometimes they only seem to last a few months - makes no sense . I have had Regatta boots and they only lasted 3 months, they replaced them but exactly the same thing happened again. I also have some short muck boots for warmth, the first pair split after 11 months and they replaced them under the guarantee. I do have trouble with grip on muck boots tho' especially on wet leaves. I have sometimes resorted to picking up second hand wellies at the boot fair, and often for a couple of pounds they last as long as anything I've bought from a shop - probably a bit for some people . patsylabrador
I've got a two year old pair of green wellies from homebase. I wear them every day for doing the chickens and every time I garden, even in the summer because I don't want insects near my feet. They have paint and stuff on them because I wear them for those types of jobs too. I don't walk in them so they haven't been tested that way. No sign of wear at all. Cheap so might be worth trying out with a pair of sorbothane insoles.
Snowy
Aigle seem very popular amongst fellow spaniel owners - have heard lots of good things about them! http://www.aigleboots.co.uk/acatalog/Aigle_Ladies_Wellies.html
sparkysmum
I'm with the "used to be brilliant but are rubbish now" camp. Refused to buy another when after they started leaking after less than a year. Bought K-Dry waterproofs instead ( leather) totally fantastic. Leather, waterproof and breathable. Wear them every day. Best footwear I've ever owned. A x
The Dogmother
DM - do the Lowther boots size up the same as Hunters (they are made by Hunter aren't they)? For £20 they look like a good buy and I don't mind if they don't last so long. I don't know if they are made by Hunter, but they are similar to how Hunter's used to be. The fit is slimmish on the foot (not boat-like) and just right on the leg..... not too slim or too baggy. I wear them a size bigger as I like to add fleecy inner soles and thick thermal skiing socks in the winter. Crofts in Banbury usually have them in stock and often reduce their boots. They stock neoprene muck boots too. I will try to remember to bring mine when we next meet up.
newcountrygirl
I had my Hunters (Pumpkin Orange) for 4 years. They finally split this year. I then bought some £20 union Jack wellies which lasted 2 months before they split. I have just bought some Geisswein wellies with a wood pattern from Ebay - £9.99 so far so good and really comfy too. Egluntyne
I've had my bright pink Crocs Georgie wellies for several years, and they are good as new. I've treated myself to another pair of longer ones, purely because they are longer, and purple, oh, and the soles are insulated.
Ain't Nobody Here
I bought a pair of these almost 2 years ago. I find them very comfy with a good grip and no sign of any splits yet.
Lavenders_Blue
Will go on a recce for the Lowther boots. We have a few agricultural/feed stores round here so I'll take a look there. I bought some Muck Boots last year and I think the quality of them is fab and they are so WARM! But unfortunately they cause terrible blisters on my heels and wear holes through the heels of my socks so I can't use them for dog walking (which I what I bought them for) I'm reluctant to pay out for another pair of expensive wellies so this time round I'm going for the budget option
The Dogmother
See what you think about the sizing, I like to fit thick socks and fleecy insoles in mine.
Lavenders_Blue
Yes I usually try to size up as thick socks are definitely a must inside wellies.

I've treated myself to another pair of longer ones, purely because they are longer, and purple, oh, and the soles are insulated. Hmmm, might have to look at these. I've had a pair of croc slippers for a long time now so the wellies might be good too. Muck boots I think I've seen too, so will have a look out for those too. craftyhunnypie
I really want some longer length boots/wellies, especially with the weather round here & all I have to do (lots of mud surfing). We have 2 feed stores local to us & they do sell boots. The thing is, I'm too embarrassed to go & try boots & wellies on. I don't have fat legs, just muscley legs from all the cycling I used to do. So the boots & wellies don't pull on. It seems wrong to have to pay more for bog standard wellies & boots just because of this reason. If they are very good boots, then fair enough, I'd pay - but expect them to last ages then. Oh help! Emma.x
Luvachicken
Just been looking at croc Jaunts, but they didn't have my size in any of the colours , and they were on special offer at £20. Then I looked at the Muck boots, there was a very nice chunky pair but they were £75 Just need to decide what to do
craftyhunnypie
Well I bought some mens Dunlop wellies in my size, as I know hubby's fit my legs & they will be good for wading through any water. Hubby's certainly stood up to wading yesterday, when the stream came over the bridge. I then went & bought some Tayberry yard / mucker boots - velcro straps for general gardening / ground work & digging. I will still suss out long equestrian type boots. My sister has some lovely ones which she where's on the farm - but I do know they were something round the £300 mark! I'd sooner have another chook house for that. chicken bark
I had a pair of Tayberry's that I was really disappointed with as they split early on. So a couple of years back I got a pair of Hunters and they have been fine and seen a lot of service walking the dog. I also managed to get a childs size 5 so got them lots cheaper. I do think wellies seem to be a bit of a minefield and there is little consistency between pairs.
LolaLayla
Just read this thread and am a bit worried as I bought some Joules wellies yesterday I think I will keep the receipt just in case. They are rather glorious though...purple with pheasants all over them

I had the same pair. I got mine 5 or so years ago and they have split.... But I must add I leave mine outside the door so they have been treated fairly cruelly. I don't think they are well made now though as mine developed little cosmetic splits quite quickly which isn't right given their cost. Spinning Top
They're totally vital darling, Yah. One needs them in central London on the school run to pick up Miasma and Caractacus from school. I totally couldn't face the other mummies without my hunters. Awesome. and don't forget the Range Rover that has never seen any mud Chrissie You can get spray on mud from Landrover showrooms. Apparently it's supposed to be to for their demo vehicles but does equally well for the 'Range' on school runs
Old Speckled Hen
and don't forget the Range Rover that has never seen any mud Chrissie[/color] Hey, don't diss Chelsea Tractors. They are an excellent source of second hand 4x4s that have done no work and have been well looked after for us in the country that really need them. By the way. My 20 year old hunters are still in good nick whereas my ten month old new ones are falling apart at the back where you pull them off against the doorstep

The Dogmother
Just resurrecting this thread with some interesting information; I went to buy some new Lowther wellies yesterday as mine had split - I blame it on the rock salt used when it's snowy - and the owner of our local feed store tells me that they are made by Hunters (which would explain why their quality has fallen slightly), which was a surprise to me, and that Hunters have now moved their manufacturing back (from China) to the UK, so the quality ought to improve. freddie
Hmmmm. I had heard the quality had plummeted. We will see what happens next!!
