Online Delivery Ettiquette

Recommended Posts

Do you tip your online grocery delivery person? We had our 1st del this week and he was lovely....he did hang around for a split second after we'd unpacked and both OH and I felt a bit awkward - should we have tipped? Given that it costs £4.00 we thought not but felt a bit non plussed!

No - I've never tipped, and never had them hang around either. I use Ocado - as you say, you've paid for the service but even if it was free I wouldn't tip.

If (rarely) I have a takeaway delivered I usually round up the price, to save them looking for change and because I don't think they earn much. I wouldn't expect to tip a supermarket delivery though.

Give him/her a box of eggs, offer the use of toilet or a slice of home made cake, little things like that mean a lot.

I am a cleaner and really appreciate it when a client leaves me some sweeties, a bag of home grown veg or other treat.

The thought never crossed my mind either.I find the whole tipping idea a nightmare.Especially at hair dressers, the girl I go to is the owner so I don't tip,but the juniors who wash I do .I used to give £2 but saw someone giving a fiver so now I feel mean, also at restaurants, when service is mediocre I still feel obliged to tip :(

I am not often at the GP surgery but when I do go I leave packet of posh biscuits or box of After Eights (from poundshop) with reception so everyone at the practice gets something.

I always offer refreshments to delivery peeps and workmen, tip postie and bin men at Christmas, I get my hair done at the local tech so tip well there.

When I go somewhere such as an eatery I tip for good service only but always contact the Head Office/manager the next day to compliment on good service/pleasant staff/spotless toilets.

Maybe it is because I worked in retail for so many years at minimum wage, minuscule thanks with maximum abuse.

I love my current job (self employed cleaner) and it does mean a lot when a client leaves me a treat or gives me a gift at Christmas. When one of my elderly clients went into a nursing home her family sent me a huge bouquet to show their appreciation of all that I did for their Mother.

I don't understand tipping etiquette. When I was at university I had lots of part time jobs. Now generally speaking waitresses get tips, bar staff don't yet are just as lowly paid and in my experience its a much harder job. Why do certain people get tips?

Tipping makes me feel awkward. I don't get tipped yet I provide a service. I rarely even get a thank you!

Having had a delivery whilst we were on hol - and it was easier - I booked another for the afternoon of our return. The boys have to take a packed lunch as there is no kitchen at school so, living in a village, I do need to be organised.

Great experience...lovely 'older' chap delivered about an hour after we got home and, when I offered him a cold drink and use of the loo (in spite of the previous post ) he said I was only the 2nd person to do so in 10 months

However, I will go back to 'proper' shopping next week but will certainly use the online again, should circumstances dictate! One Luddite with a sense of satisfaction 8)

PS They didn't have the wine I had ordered so subsituted with a better one at the same price - RESULT :lol:

I almost always use online grocery shopping...

1. I hate shopping with a vengeance, especially supermarkets

2. I rarely have the time to go shopping

3. I can almost never park near my house, sometimes not even in the same street, so unpacking the car is a nightmare.

4. I spend less when shopping online.

I have used both Te$co and Sainsburys in the past, but now stick to Ocado; their price promise means that they are rarely more expensive than the others, and their food quality is far better, so fresh produce lasts a lot longer. Fruit and veg usually comes form farmers' markets or firends who grow organically (the latter swap it for chicken manure!) and our meat comes from a local free range butcher.
