Suddenly very ill Lucie - pts earlier.

Recommended Posts

I thought yesterday afternoon that Lucie didn't look quite her perky self.

But she still pottered round with the others and was still eating.

She sounded a little bit coldy but nothing as serious as before. I thought I had time to take her to the vet later if she needed to go.

She went to bed as normal with the others.

This morning though, she wasn't up and about but instead was in the nest box looking not far from death :(

I picked her up and brought her into the cage in the kitchen.

Her legs didn't work and she just laid down.

I did see her mouth had mucus in it.

Unfortunately it was just as I needed to walk to work, so hubby kindly took her to the vet for me and she decided to put Lucie to sleep.

This was a very sudden thing to happen.

I didn't really get a chance to get her to the vet to try and make her better. She only sounded a little bit snuffly yesterday afternoon.

She was my oldest hen - I got her in June 2012.

She was never any bother - except with her wobbly head - but I think she only ever laid about 12 eggs in her entire life.

Sweet dreams Lucie xx

Thank you everyone :D

My sister asked "How did I know she didn't have bird flu ?"

I don't :?

Hubby said the vet wasn't concerned and that she didn't mention bird flu and to only put the others on my huge tub of antibiotics if I noticed anything wrong.

I gave them all a thorough check over earlier and held each one to my ear and couldn't hear anything odd.

They have no access to outside at all, their roofs are totally covered and I haven't seen a bird of any kind in there for a long time.

As she was PTS by the vet I'm sure he/she would have tested for / sent for flu tests if it was thought necessary, and would have let you know.

Pretty negligent if not.

I don't know how long the incubation period is, but I'm pretty sure if it had been flu the others would have had it already too. I think it's pretty unlikely.

You would hope the vet would know what to do wouldn't you.

As I said, I've checked the others and couldn't hear anything but I will check them again every afternoon for a good while.

It's weird having them up close to your ear.

I did ask them not to peck my sparkly ear rings or my eye.

Aww enjoy the land of mealworms on tap Lucy. Sorry about the poor little chook *hugs*. Probably the symptoms of avian flu are different so the vet likely would have known what to look for. Luckily we haven't had any incidents reported here . . . yet, so chances are your girls are OK.
