The Dogmother
It works too Lesley - my boss does the South Beach Diet every now and then, he always finds it easy to follow, loses weight and feels healthy into the bargain. I understand that if you google, there are lots of delicious recipes for the diet.
Lesley
I always struggled with South Beach - I could never manage two weeks without potat - especially as we grow lots of different varieties. The Harcombe Diet has just 5 days of the phase 1 and even I can manage that! I bought her books just before Christmas (cheap on Amazon, not her online prices) and started a few days into the new year - I did my 5 days......with plenty of salad ( not fond of salad at the best of times) through the coldest weather ever!!!! The Dogmother
poor you. I've got back into eating salad - not the first thing you think of in this weather, is it? I had forgotten just how lovely it is though. Keep going!
Rhapsody
Back to WW after a 2 month break and I've put 8lb back on so its back on the points for me. I cant eat salad in winter so I'm back on the stir-fry..
Lesley
I did think about stir-fry yesterday for lunch but made a coleslaw instead. I did make plenty of soup, as Kinsk says.
Happy chickens!
Just looked at Hardcombe website, very interesting. After the first 5 days, do you put the carbs back in? Have never tried anything other than reducing calories and increasing excercise before - and as the years have gone by that has got harder! Does it really work??!! Ps article in the Telegraph today says excercise doesn't make any difference! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7147952/Millions-of-people-waste-their-time-by-jogging.html
The Dogmother
I saw the same article in The Mail today - they point out that 'some people' don't get the same benefit from exercise as others do. This is another case of citing the blooming obvious - as an ex-personal trainer - that's always been known, however, there are so many other health benefits associated with (moderate) exercise that you'd be daft not to. Everyone's metabolism is different and react differently to diet changes and exercise; I find it easy to exercise and see changes, a friend of a similar age finds very little effect from roughly the same amount of exercise. It's all about working with what works for your body and lifestyle.
Rhapsody
That article is on a similar vein to the one Claret posted. Thanks ladies. From a personal perspective, I worked in the fitness business for years and yes people do waste alot of their time when they work out because they havent a clue how hard they should be working or what is actually beneficial. For example lengths and lengths of gentle swimming with the head poked out of the water like a turtle is pretty pointless but loads of women I know at WW do it. At least they are away from the fridge... Misconceptions abound too, women think if they use weights they will puff up like Sly Stallone, men dont see the point of flexibilty, etc etc. As for exercise being 'pointless' I would say that my 3 1/2 stone weight loss last year was down to a dietary re-think rather than the treadmill, but aesthetically I prefer the look of toned firm bodies to soft ones so I do workouts that will help me achieve that (BodyBalance, Boxercise, BodyPump) but I dont do them for weight loss. Ps article in the Telegraph today says excercise doesn't make any difference! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7147952/Millions-of-people-waste-their-time-by-jogging.html Yes, it does work....and I was quite sceptical I registered on the Harcombe site and get newsletters. Then, I started reading as much as I could and decided that it wasn't going to do any harm so I'd give it a go. I've been very surprised. After the 5 day phase you do introduce carbs but you don't mix carbs and fat so it is difficult to eat large amounts of carbs. There are only 3 rules for each phase and no weighing or measuring. I tested the food I thought was giving me problems at the end of the 5 days and had the usual results so I'm still avoiding bread. (I was tested for wheat intolerance a few years ago) I have found it much easier than I thought I would. My daughter and SIL are following it as well as I accidentally bought the book twice and passed one to them. I have to have a further cholesterol test soon so I shall be interested to see what the GP says.
Happy chickens!
Thanks Lesley - may order the book and give it a go after half term, as you say it is quite cheap on amazon. Have just had weekend away with girls, so now that out of the way should be able to be a bit more disciplined! New wii games have arrived as well, like the look of the wii fit plus as can build up a programme. Still no appointment for physio for my back - do they think that if they delay these things they won't be needed so will save money? Am having to guess which excercises to avoid from info from internet which isn't ideal!

At least they are away from the fridge... A Heart Rate monitor was one of the best things I ever bought, and helps me get to a certain heart rate, stay there, and burn the calories. By really using it, I have been able to up my level of fitness ten fold and have gone from being able to run 10 meters and then collapsing, to going out for runs of around 12 km - and enjoying it! (And losing a fair amount of weight in the process) I have also learnt that if I go swimming, how hard I should be working, and what my heart rate should be, to be able to gain some benefit. And did laugh at one person this morning, who was doing exactly what you said in the pool... Chatting to her friend, and moaning about putting on weight even though she was swimming 2 or 3 times a week...
The Dogmother
I go circuit training of a Monday evening and had often wondered at the lady 'built like a weeble' coming out of the Body Pump class beforehand; turns out that she hangs out at the back of the class and natters to her mates. Perhaps she thinks that you can get fit by osmosis
