Ardene5
Hi Having owned quite a few cars I have often wondered what became of them and also I wish I still the odd one now. Hillman Imp Had 2 of them but do not miss them. Would describe as a bath tub on wheel as had water leaks. Rover Metro Was ok but a bit small had problems with the plate on the gear change selector. Suzuki SJ410 Nice car if a little narrow basic 4x4. I had a red Rhino Safari with 1000 cc engine and selectable 4x4 unit. Suzuki Vitara Nicely styled 4x4 with 1600 cc engine only a 3 door and was white. Would have been better with a 5 door and a different colour. Nissan Terrano Had 2 of them ... 3 door then 5 door expensive on tyres about £100 per tyre! Nissan Primera First automatic great (wish I had automatics before) but better half ended up with it and I had her Escort. Ford Escort It was a replacement for a Suzuki 2 seater sports car. Toyota Master Ace Automatic MPV interesting car but a little old, swivel seats, flip up rear seats , can become a small van or great for camping as seats can be changed to make a large double bed! Toyota Town Ace Field Tourer Automatic As the Master Ace but younger lovely mpv to drive saved my life( Ian) in an accident. Insurance wrote the car off. Was a great car wish we still had it. Volvo V70 automatic Estate Sounds good many extras but miss the Toyota Town Ace. Volvo has lower driving position but more powerful engine in bhp. Given the change would go back to a Toyota M.P.V. What have you had and what do you like? Thank you Best regards Ian Ian & Valerie William & Harry Missy & Millie dogs 9 lovely hens Henian Castle with inside
Joojoo
My favourite cars (out of quite a few that we owned over the years and no longer have) are: Triumph Herald 1360 x 2 Mini 1000 x 2 BMW Mini Cooper S My absolute favourite - Subaru Imprezza WRX (had to go when we separated) We did have quite a few more than the above. Including numerous Vauxhall Cavaliers, Vauxhall Carlton, Vauxhall Vectra (current) and a Fiat Uno which was a total deathtrap. If I could have any car (money no object) it would be an Audi R8
Cate in NZ
The last car I owned was a vauxhall Astra convertible...and I loved that car. I only sold it because we were emigrating and shipping it over just didn't seem practicable at the time, although now I really regret that decision. The person who bought it from me got a real bargain, I'm still fuming at how little I ended up letting it go for, but I was stuck between a rock and a hard place and had very little choice . But now that the summer's coming and the weather's glorious I'd truly love to have it, roof down and whizzing along the roads here . Convertibles are a rare sight in NZ...and expensive to boot, so I'm unlikely to own another one .
clootie
My favourite is my current car, a little black Audi TT coupe but, it's proving more difficult to squeeze the kids in the back now so I've got my eye on a black Mini Sidewalk convertible !! Cinnamon
I had an old shape gumdrop orange Beetle, who I loved. We bought him as a heap & ended up doing a full retro on him - he was totally gorgeous when he was finished Horrible to drive though - no heaters as such, bumpy & smelt of fish when it rained (the older cars had fish glue celing loints!) But I miss him, and he was free to Tax too Should have kept him for the daughters really, but we were made an offer we couldn't refuse... The car I had before this one was a big black Merc.No real character (unlike the Beetle), but a real joy to drive & park. An elegant car that you didn't feel the need to drive fast it. I love Marge,my current bright blue new shape Panda. She has it all as far as I am concerned. She drives beautifully,is nice & nippy & looks quirky enough to have a bit of character to her She has a glass roof,so is always lovely & bright inside too, which I like
BeckyBoo
I loved my Dads old Volvo 144s as he used to let me change the gears as he drove along (in the days before car seats and airbags ) I had a fab old Mini Clubman, it had a hole in the passenger floorwell where you could see the road racing by if you lifted the carpet. And sometimes you couldn't start it for no explicable reason so you had to stand on the door sill on the passenger side and rock it like mad, then it would start! I've had loads of cars too, I had an old Opel Kadett that I got bored with (it was rust brown) so I found EVERY tin of paint hanging around and bought a few more and painted the whole thing multi coloured, it had a sky for the roof with clouds and a sun, and it said "Love Peace and Freedom" down the sides and across the bonnet. I've got a good old red bus at the minute, a Toyota Previa which suits us down to the ground, full of bikes, scooters, dog hair, glue glitter and biscuit crumbs! But the one I miss the most is the old Toyota Coaster bus we bought to travel round Australia in. STBXOH put a big double bed across the back, a tiny kitchen and we drove 23,000km's in it round Oz in a figure of 8, with eldest daughter playing lego in the back and middle daughter growing in me tum!! We were considering driving it back to the UK across Asia but realistically it would have fallen apart at the first sign of rain so we sold it on. laurmurf
We had an old Volvo 66 ( a Daf) that i adored - it had an automatic transmission that ran on rubber bands and we used to get waved at by other cars: there was even a DAF owners club. My favourite of all time was my Toyota Spacecruiser - fantastic to drive, dead easy to park, sliding doors, could seat 8 with belts but managed 11 on several occasions! Would take people PLUS shopping which my current Galaxy won't do. We only gave it up when our car mechanic said it would never make it through another MOT . We sold it for £250 WITH a new battery. I am still gutted when I see it driving around York, in mint condition, several years later!
Cooks
my first ever car was an 1957 Austin A 35 in black with cherry red interior that I restored with my dad. I have then had number of cars in my 18 years of driving.. Panda, Austin Maestro Peugeot Citroen AX.. hubby bought me this as a pressie when we were not married, I hated parting with it.. but 3 door had to go when baby number 1 arrived. nova 2 x Renault's Mercedes - classic restored by hubby and me and then stolen 2 months later Citroen Picasso I will add more as I remember them... Mrs Frugal
The first car I remember Dad owning was a white Austin Cambridge with red leather seats. His next car was beautiful and will always be my all time favourite - a two tone Austin Westminster in coffee and beige, again with leather seats and fold down wooden picnic tables in the back. A really lovely car. When company cars became the thing to have, he sold beautiful "Wessie" and was given a dreadful Austin Princess in brown and orange - just like the one featured on Top Gear . Bits fell off that with alarming regularity and it had that horrible new smell which made me car sick! He moved on to a similarly coloured Chrysler Alpine and a series of Rovers, another Top Gear laughing stock . I didn't learn to drive until I was 30 so haven't had many cars myself......yet. An old Ford Fiesta A lovely 3 door Vauxhall Corsa "Meg the Egg" A horrible silver Ford Ka and my current and favourite, a black Vauxhall Corsa
Mrs Webmuppet
My favorite car was my battered rusty old 1968 blue Beetle ( affectionately known as Henry the Heap). Leaked like a sieve, bits fell off it with alarming regularity. Every time it rained I had to dismantle the distributer cap, spray with WD40 and reassemble it. I even managed to do a basic service on it with a little help. Unfortunately he became an MOT failure and had to go.....to be replace by an old style Panda. since the Panda I've had: Citroen AX Nissan Micras (two of them) Citroen Saxo (furio 1.4 scary girl racer car) Renault Clio ( I am now on my second one) My dream car ......mmm not sure on that one. Omletina Kyckling
Ooohh I love cars, both hubby and me are real car anoraks, and having both worked in research and development of cars (hubby still does) just makes it worse. My absolute favourite car is Baby Landy, he's my short wheelbase Land Rover Defender pick up and I absolutely adore him. Hubby has done lots of work on him so he is just how I want him, leather seats, mohair tonneau cover, A frame, snorkel, lots of extra lights..... We also have a classic 911 (his name is P - he's a proper one with the big tea tray at the back, air cooled rather than the poncey water cooled ones now), and two Audi quattros (like the Ashes to Ashes one, they are called q and redq) which I love for different reasons, and hubby has a BIG Landy, long wheelbase 10 seater complete with roof tent!. I mustn't forget Erik, the tractor, he's a 1971 David Brown 990. Previous loved cars....hmmm....I had a TR7 when I was teaching, with a Dolomite Sprint engine in it, and it was pretty nippy, the exhaust never seemed to be quite right though and it made such a din!! One headlight always stayed up too, and I always thought it looked so appealing! I drove Hillman Imps at Uni, and got to know the RAC men between Huddersfield and Newcastle by first names.... We had a lovely old Golf GTi Mk 1 called, rather predictably, Golfy (not very original names, I know....) - he was also great fun. I may have to go wash and polish Baby Landy now.....hmmm.... jlo
My first ever car was a vomit coloured Austin Allegro and I was very fond of her. I called her Petunia as her number plate was PET 131R. She cost £150 and I drove her to Canterbury from Derbyshire the day after I passed my test. The back seat was very dodgy so I had to use my law books to stop back seat passengers from ending up in a heap on the floor. I did occasionally read them as well! (the books, not the passengers!) Perhaps my coolest car was my Mark II Escort that replaced Petunia. She served me very well until someone pulled out in front of me on the A30 and wrote her off. I do like my current bus. A VW Touran that passes for a rubbish tip if you were unfortunate enough to look inside!

Looney
I loved my brown (erm, a sort of pooey brown colour!) Reliant Kitten. Now, that car had character!!! It had 4 wheels, an 858cc engine and a turning circle that would make a black cab jealous. Hence why I can't reverse park as I used to go into any space front on!!! Oh, and it was made of fibreglass so no rust issues either.
Snowy
Oooh, good thread, I do love cars! Just wish I could afford to indulge myself with all my favourites! 3 x Honda Civics that I drove into the ground Renault 5 that nearly put me off Renaults for life Gave up car ownership for a few years for financial reasons (whilst OH had a succession of cavaliers and mondeos) Then had several company cars (Rovers). Quite liked them, so when I had to buy my own, got a 7 year old Rover 800 - loved it! Metallic wine red with cream leather interior, electric seats, climate control, the works. Fabulous car! When it finally died, got my first brand new car - black Ford Puma. Another fab car, very enjoyable drive, dead sporty, with the sports pack. Then I got pregnant and the Puma had to go as I couldn't fit in it, and I couldn't get a baby seat in it Temporarily had an Astra estate (cheap and practical) but couldn't fit 3 children on the back seat (well, 2 baby seats and a large teenager ) so in came the MPVs. Short lived Galaxy - old and past it but good fun while it lasted. Bargain of the year bought on Ebay - a Renault Espace Priviledge last owned by BSkyB with blacked out windows and enough electrical points to power a bungalow. Built in satnav, cruise control, phone cradle, electric everything, suede seats, automatic, 3 litre V6 engine, metallic silvery green, 3 sunroofs (but did about 18 mpg). Not only capable of carting the family about in luxury but drove like an absolute dream! Written off when an armour plated van pulled out in front of OH - could've been serious but the car was built like a tank and none of my boys were hurt at all Very grateful for it's safety features, but sad to lose it. Now replaced with a Grand Espace Priviledge, bigger but not nearly so many features, more economical as it's diesel, very 'practical' Still miss my Green Espace
Plum
Ooh. My husband had a black standard 10 when I met him, Ive some fond memories of that. His next car was a cortina that I drove into a gate the first day he got it. Still have fond memories of it, it was a sort of banana colour. Lots of cars since then but the one I love is my Golf I have now. Best bit is the reversing warning. In past I have driven into a tree in the new forest, a bollard at work, a lampost, a rock, ................... all going backwards. Our black Clio was the first car bought for me and I did love that. I hated the colour to begin with but soon turned into a girl racer. Least fond memories are for an old green Escort whos quater light window kept falling out. I always feel emotional when the car goes though. - My Golf is never going.
Reikiranf
Ooh what a trip down memory lane My Dad's first car was a Morris Minor we loved that and had lots of lovely days out, my dad had lots of cars mainly because we couldn't afford anything decent so they were usually on their way out when we got them! He also had a Vauxhall Victor, an Austin Cambridge, an A40, a Renault 4 or 5, a mini clubman, a Maxi, 2 Ladas, a Vauxhall Astra and he's now got a Renault Kangoo that's adapted to take my mum's wheelchair. I have fond memories of most of them but at the time I used to be really embarrassed as my friends parents all had nice new cars. I was lucky that before I passed my driving test we'd got up to our eyes in debt to get a brand new car, we'd bought second hand prior to that and had nothing but trouble It was a white Escort popular and was 6 months old when I started driving. I loved it it was a fantastic little car and never let us down, we had it for nearly 7 years and only ever had to replace the exhaust, battery and tyres. Our next car was a Mondeo but we sold that as I had 3 accidents in it all whilst I was stationary, first a guy reversed out of his drive straight into the side of me, second time another guy smashed straight into the back of me whilst I was waiting to make a right turn and the last one was when I was parked outside a shop waiting for my DD and a guy came out of the shop and reversed into the front of my car, I ended up being convinced that I was going to die in that car so it had to go! I've now got a lovely little Punto and I love it! it's 7 years old and I've had it from new but it's very economical, and whilst it's also been damaged by other people fortunately I've not been in it at the time! I've fitted a tall upright freezer in it, sofas, mattresses, armchairs, widescreen tv and speakers, a dozen rolls of loft insulation and yes the kitchen sink! though not all at the same time

Olly
gosh some of you have had some interesting times - love your tale of driving across Australia, Mrs B. I LOVE the smell of new cars. First car: Vauxhall Viva, engine was fantastic but the bodywork rusted Current car: Ford Focus - practical, cheap to run, nice firm drive - I'd buy one again, but it's not very exciting. Best ever car: (sob) my Opel Manta Berlinetta - 1.8 litre engine, went like, er, muck off a shovel, changing gear was like running a knife through butter - I cried when I had to let it go. I sold it to the lovely mechanic at the Co-Op garage in Loughborough who had been keeping it on the road for me; he did it up, and I used to see it around, but eventually even he found it was costing too much to keep on the road. I've never felt the same about a car since then - they're just workhorses to me now.
Redwing
I have only been driving for five years but I get a company car so am now on my fifth car. My fave car so far has been a big bottomed Renault Megane called Alfie, it was an absolutely super car - comfy and smooth, everything worked well and was good quality and I racked up all of its 90K miles before it had to go back I have also just had a Volvo S40 which was a luxury car with all of the gadgets known to man and was also a lovely smooth drive but not as fun and frisky as the Megane. I now have a BMW which is lovely too but if I could turn the clock back to July I would order another Megane!
craftyhunnypie
My ford fiesta - got nicked & found in Llandudno full of syringes My fiat strada - had a wonky fuel indicator, so was forever running out of petrol. My Fiat 126 - went like a little bomb My VW beetle bananamobile - the love of my life, with red wheels & window wipers to look like a Noddy car My gold metro automatic - car I bought after coming back to England. Drove to Llangollen & on the way back it died. My Triumph Spitfire - only just gone to a lovely new owner. I shall remember driving around on a summers evening with the top down & how I couldn't turn the heater off in Summer. I shall remember buying a long roll of bamboo fencing & carrying it home in the Spitfire with the roof down. I shall remember the long bonnet & most of all getting in & out of the car. Driving with my bum almost on the road! Memories eh? Emma.x
dancing cloud
First car I remember was my parents' A40 - red body, black roof. Apparently when they changed it for a blue Cortina I screamed my little head off and wouldn't go in it because it wasn't ours I've only ever owned 2 cars - a blue Nova, that I feel no emotinal links to at all now, and my current little rust heap white Clio. She and I have been together nearly 15 years now and I have moved house so many times we have geography as well as history . I will definitely miss her when we have to part
chelsea
Suzuki SJ410 Nice car if a little narrow basic 4x4. I had a red Rhino Safari with 1000 cc engine and selectable 4x4 unit. My first real car (that I bought with my own money) was an SJ413, it was fab, loved it. It was turquoise green with a white soft top. Not many people liked it as much as me though - it got called a greenhouse by my auntie as she said she felt like a tomato riding around in it with the plastic roof flapping around! Cheek! Was sorry to see it go. best dad's car - FORD CAPRI...Mark 1. Silver with black go faster stripes and black vinyl roof and wait for it.......a cassette player...yes it played cassettes! it ended up at the s"Ooops, word censored!" yard after many fond years.
