Anya, my cream legbar, is gone

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

some of you will know that we've been worried about Anya for a few days. She was showing signs of being egg bound on Thursday, she was given AB and anti-inflamatory by the poultry vet who said he couldn't find an egg, but to watch her. Lots of good advice led me to find and dose her with liquid calcium too. She became a 'house chicken' too, a real pet hen who loved to fall asleep on our laps and roost on shoulders (or heads!). She never stopped straining though (and squealing while she did so).

I was so lucky to have Claret take a look at her on Saturday when she behaved impecably at mostin's house (Anya that is, not Claret!). Claret couldn't find an egg either but gave me some other ideas to try. By Sunday she started to go downhill again. She began to prolapse while straining and wasn't eating or drinking much (despite being hand fed grapes while soaking in a warm bucket-bath).

Today i realised things weren't really going to improve; I brought her best pal, Willow, in to spend the day with her while i was at work and it really perked her up.

I brought her to my favourite vet tonight (he breeds brahmas); he had a really good look, asked lots of questions and said that he thought he could possibly feel an egg but it was very high up in her egg laying tackle. There really wasn't anything more that could be done for her as the prolapse was getting worse, as was her distress, and she was losing weight too. He was wonderfully sympathetic and gentle with Anya. It broke my heart to say goodbye to her - she was my darling.

So so sorry Laurie, and all the family, I know you all must be really devastated. She was beautiful and was such a star on Saturday, even though she wasn't well.

She got a day with her best friend and she's not suffering now. it doesn't make it hurt any less for you, but she'll be happy and at peace in chicken heaven  .

I don't know what else to say but I'm crying with you.

I'm so sorry to hear that Laurie, but it was a brave decision that you made and the right one for her welfare. I could tell how upset you were when we talked yesterday.

I honestly don't think that you could have done anything more - you gave her such excellent care. I'm no vet, but it looks like she might have had some sort of congenital abnormality in her egg tackle that caused her to strain.

Poor wee thing - she was so well behaved too. Rest in peace sweetheart and keep safe at rainbow bridge.

Love and hugs to you Laurie
