I'm worried sick. Saturday update

Recommended Posts

My very best wishes to your brother for a speedy recovery and to you also- it's so physically and emotionally exhausting both for the poor patient and their concerned family and friends. I would see surgery as a plus point- it's when they don't see the point in operating that one is likely to fear the worse. I'll keep my finger's crossed for you all.

Sorry I didn't update yesterday, we came home had some dinner , watched wild at heart and I went to bed.

Mum and I went to see him yesterday afternoon. He is comfortable. There was a growth in the wall of his small intestine. The consultant is fairly confident that it is benign. From everything I've been reading cancer of the small intestine is pretty rare, so fingers crossed. The operation took 5 hours and he was in recovery for another 5. He has had to have a colostomy bag but again the surgeon is fairly confident that he will be able to reverse that in 6 months or so.

He's got tubes coming from everywhere, poor thing.

It was just a relief to see him and he hasn't lost his sense of humour, he seemed much more peaceful and relaxed, thank goodness.

We are going again today, trouble is it makes you so tired and then you have to come home and do all the stuff you haven't done.

Thank goodness he's through the surgery, and they have a clearer idea of what they are dealing with. The helpless bit is the not knowing, isn't it, and it sounds like he's got a good team working with him, and his sense of humour sounds like it's in great form which will be a tremendous help.

I hope you can call on help from people around you, with all the stuff that doesn't go away, so you don't end up running on empty. I think people do like to help but aren't sure how to offer sometimes.

Very best wishes for your brother's speedy and complete recovery

Thankyou everyone, you are all very kind wonderful people. It's a shame the world isn't full of Omleteers!

The comment I made about his sense of homour related to something that happened years ago. My Mum was in hospital 9 years ago and was also extremely ill, technically she died twice. When she came out of intensive care she was really dosed up on Morphine and anyone who has had experience of someone being on that stuff will know what I mean. She was halucinating and telling us all kinds of stories, helicopters landing, strange bugs and things like that, quite scary really, I wondered if we were going to get the same person back that went into hospital. Well my brother yesterday (he is on Morphine) but not as much as Mum was, said we've had helicopters landing and gave me a big wink. Which just made me smile. When we are together we do love winding my Mum up, because she rises to it so easily.

We are going to see him again today, so I'm hoping we might have some more information and that we will see an improvement from yesterday.

Good news that he's chirpy, he must have been in so much discomfort before the op, once he recovers from the surgery hopefully he will be much much better.

Wouldn't the world be better if everyone was an Omleteer? I might even start up an "Omleteer Commune" so I don't have to deal with anyone who isn't like minded and kind natured ever again! :D

Good luck and best wishes to you all

I'm so pleased to hear the good news about your brother. The fact that he can joke must be very reassuring for you. It is the not knowing that is the worst and it sounds like his docs are doing everything they can. Don't forget to take care of yourself too. The housework can wait, the world won't end if the washing up isn't done. Your mental and physical health is far more important. You've been through a worrying time and you need to give yourself time to get over that.

Positive vibes still winging your way

I have been watching the thread and sending positive vibes your way. I am so glad that the op is over and it looks like the blockage is benign. Consultants can often tell, you know, just be what it looks like, although they will check it out more fully in Pathology, no doubt.

Gastrointestinal problems are something I have experience of as my Mum had her colon removed because of cancer. The surgeon managed to join her gut and so she did not have to have a colostomy. This happened almost 21 years ago, and my Mum was 88 last November! I also have a daughter with Crohn's Disease, so she makes regular trips to see the Gastro consultant at the Chelsea and Westminster (who is wonderful, if you ever needed to know). It is more than likely that she will be looking at surgery at some point.

She has had several stays in hospital so I know what you are talking about as regards the disruption of usual routine. Its very tiring making trips to the hospital and doing the nuturing and 'nursing' to make sure the patient has all they want whilst you are there. Hope you manage to get some rest now he is on the mend from the op. Have you got nice neighbours to help? I am very lucky in that respect...

Please keep us updated, and wish your brother all the best

I've been on my round trip to Slough again today. He was very tired today but he had more colour in his face although it had been a bit of a tough day for him. He is obviously improving as he was feeling a bit rebelious today and getting a bit frustrated with not being able to do things for himself, his magazines had been left around the other side of his bed and he couldn't get to them that sort of thing.

Anyway it was good to see a bit of an improvement since yesterday.
