tom123
Haven't been on here in a while and this really isn't how I expected to be saying hello. Was out in the garden with the chooks before school. They were out in the garden because my mums off work. Went into the shed. Heard lots of squaking, run back out to see floyd in a huge fox's mouth. I threw a stone at it and it hit on the head (lucky throw) however it dropped him and ran out of the garden. I thought it was just floyd but no. Floyd, Babs, Fizz and Maisy were all dead on the lawn and Milly was led down. I have just checked her over in tears and found 2 puncture marks on her back and bum. She is not bleeding and she has layed an egg but they look deep and painful. Is there anything I can do before my dad gets back to take me to the vets? Thanks Tom RIP Floyd Fizz Maisy Babs
Redwing
I'm so sorry Tom get her indoors in a box with something to keep her warm like a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, offer food and water and if she calms down enough try to clean the wounds with some salty water (about half a teaspoon to a big glass of water)
AussieChick
Oh dear Tom. If you think it's bad then get her to the vets and make a difficult decision if you have to with a clear concscience - you wouldn't want her to suffer. Poor you, I think we could all be in your position so easily. Take care and keep us posted. x
ClaireG
I am so sorry Tom The only thing i can add to Redwings excellent advice is if you have any try a drop of Rescue Remedy in the water, it's great for shock.
craftyhunnypie
Oh Tom, I don't know what to say - I'm so sorry, you must be devastated. I know I would be. Just bring her inside, make her comfortable & give her lots of sweet talking to - keep her calm. Best to take her the vets get her checked over. likeastar--x
hey tom, ive had a very similar experience so i know how your feeling we had a chook who was attacked by a fox and had puncture wounds all over her back and bum, and we thought there was no chance she would survive. i dont know how bad yours are as you havent described them in detail but if she survives the initial shock by being somewhere warm, dark and quiet, the vet can prescribe a antiseptic to clean it with, a tissue filler to fill the puncture holes and a cream to help encoarage the healing of skin. those chickens are resiliant little things, and youd be surprised what they could survive through. i hope milly gets better xxx

Gamebird
So sorry to hear about your loss, Tom. I do hope Milly survives her ordeal. My Veronica was taken by a fox and survived to tell the tale so there is always hope. Unfortunately, now that the fox knows you have chickens he/she will probably come back so please be aware and keep your remaining flock safe. Guest
Hope she pulls through..I lost all my ducks to a fox bar one...exactly the same situation, mine were all shut up in their wooden house and it broke in. They had free ranged for 4 years and to be killed in the house was not expected! I didnt hear a thing... The lonesome duck did survive and I hope your chicken does too ..fingers crossed. Saw a fox this morning at 6am going across garden...Um indie
