House Hunting/split due to family Tragedy

Recommended Posts

I visited Tom today and his breathing was fine so fingers crossed the problem will no longer reoccur. He has put on weight since I last saw him (1 1/2 stone) and his BMI is now 20 so he looks so much bettter.

My sis went to see him this evening and played him a Simpsons DVD. Tom loves the Simpsons and when he heard the title music he moved his arm. Sis got a nurse and played it again and he moved his arm again. She did it 4 times and each time Tom moved his arm. We hope he will now perform his party trick in front of the consultant. We don't want the consultant to say it is a reflex action. At long last it is a glimmer of hope. I have to confess to feeling pessimistic today as it is 9 weeks tomorrow since the accident and he hasn't made much progress.

Hi Shirl,

What do you mean ...not much progress :?::)

He's alive,

he's put on weight,

he survived the jourey home,

his BMI is good,

his breathing is improving,

he's got a loving family all around him

AND

he's responded to the Simpsons :!:

Remember...Where there's life, there's hope :!:

Of course, there are always the Omleteers positive vibes coming your way as a back up

Try to view it as only 9 weeks since the accident. His body has had a lot to cope with and now it is starting to try and repair itself. The fact that he responded four times in the same way to the DVD sounds really hopeful. He's putting on weight and all the signs at the moment are positive. I understand it must be hard for you but it's going to take time. And it doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as his progress is on an upward curve. There may be setbacks but as long as the trend is in the right direction.

We're all here for you Shirl, whenever you need to sound off.

It sounds such an up and down time for you all right now. Tom sounds like such a fighter in that every time you fear the worst, he comes back stronger. Like someone said, its only been 9 weeks and after such a serious crash. I broke my ankle and that took 3 months before walking on it again, and that was just bone that had to heal. Keep on playing him The Simpsons and anything else he loves. My best wishes to you all xx

Fantastic news that Tom is continuing to improve :D as the others have said it is only 9 weeks, when you are living every minute with him it feels so slow.

When I used to work on ITU and patients were admitted with severe head injuries nursing them everyday means that small improvements can be overlooked, having a week off and coming back the differences were huge :D

Take care of yourself and hugs to all :D

Thanks everyone I know you're right I just feel very frustrated and I just want him to get better to prove the Drs wrong. He had an EEG today because they think he might be having fits. I think it's because he's started sleeping with his eyes open. He never seems to shut his eyes anymore. Even in the night they stay wide open. He also seems to snore when he's awake.

OH used to do that - and DS does as well (not that I've seen him much lately - asleep or otherwise  ). It's a bit unnerving especially when they are in dream mode and their eyes are moving around a lot!

But it is great to hear that Tom has done so well and overcome so many setbacks so far. I hope it continues. When I first had my disc problem it seemed that one day was really bad, but the next was better, then bad, then much better still and so it went on that way. Perhaps he feels the same - he might not be able to respond much, and perhaps he wears himself out trying and then has a quiet time just to rest awhile. Maybe the eyelid muscles are being short circuited out for the brain cells to work on another area for the time being. Always a positive thought. :)
