House Hunting/split due to family Tragedy

Recommended Posts

The translator is faxing his report from the ICU on Monday and then I have an appointment with Tom's GP Thursday. Hopefully the GP will be happy to fill in the health insurance form so we can claim on his insurance. We're also filling out forms to be his Deputy so we can get the insurance money out of his account to pay for repatriation. It normally takes 15-21 weeks but we can get an interim order so hopefully once both of these are done he can come home to the UK. Obviously the logistics are a nightmare but at least I feel like we're getting somewhere.

That's good :) . You must be relieved that things are starting to move in the right direction :) . Will he be near you when he comes home?

I hope so. He normally lives about 5 miles away but I don't know what the provision is for brain injuries locally.

Contact Headway, the brain injury association. They are fantastic.

Hi

Tom is now not ready for repatriation. He has another infection so he can't be moved. Apparently this is quite normal that it is quite hard to find a safe window in which to repatriate. We do have a quote of £11,700 to repatriate though which is less than we thought. We are going to leave it until later in the week and then give up on the insurance and pay for it ourselves. The company have offered to set up a fundraising website to pay for it but this doesn't feel right to me. It isn't as if we can't get the funds albeit that my sister will need to take out a loan to pay her donation. Hopefully we will be able to claim the money back from Tom's estate when his critical illness insurance pays out.

We are still truggling with the car insurance which my dad swears will cover the repatriation. I told him to claim if he thought it would pay out but after 3 weeks he decided to hand it to me. This isn't great because you have to claim within 30 days (Tuesday) so we are running out of time. The car hire comapny Goldcar have been useless. They still haven't given us the name of the correct insurance company and so I have finally admitted defeat and called the British Consulate again and they are trying to se if they can help. More than anything I want to know if they will pay for his repatriation although damage to the car still needs to be paid for and Goldcar have already sent a bill!

Aside from the infection he is doing OK. My aunt has been out with Tom this week and she tells me he has started yawning and sneezing. I know the DRs would say they are just reflexes but to me any new thing that he does is progress. He had another brain scan Thursday so we are hoping to get the results Monday although judging by his lack of awareness we aren't expecting it to tell us there has been any improvement.

We really want him home. One day when my aunt went in there was wee all over the floor because his bag (sorry don't know what it's called) was full. My friend who is a nurse tells me it's dangerous because the urine can travel back to the bladder and cause infection. Also they don't have any soap in the toilets so my aunt had to buy that special gel to clean her hands with before she went into see him.No wonder he has an infection!

Sorry for the long post and the rant. Shirl

OK it's a week on and our first real news for a week. My sister was told that Tom is ready for repatriation again. Obviously we were  with joy although the repatriation company might not agree. They recieved his medical notes today so we are waiting for them to translate them. Once they have done that they will let us know if they think he is ready to come home. They then have to try and find him a bed in a nearby hospital.

Neurologically though he is unchanged. He isn't being fed now as the food keeps upsetting his stomach which is not a nice thought. He also has acute renal failure I'm not sure what the chances of that improving are though. My friend is a renal nurse so I will ask her tomorrow.

To add to this excitment we had an offer accepted on a house today. The OH bless him has been merrily looking at houses whilst I've been busy with Tom's affairs. It was none of the houses that we originally looked at. It does have 3 acres, 5 stables and a manege so plenty of room for us to keep a few animals. There is already a chicken run as the current owner has 26 chickens, 20 of which are ex batts. It isn't perfect but we'd have been looking forever if we waited for that.

Things are looking UP :)

It's feels odd reading some of your posts saying you wish the news for Tom was better. I guess I am so focused on getting him home that his medical condition is almost forgotten. The thought that he could be home by the end of the week is amazing and I'm just focusing on that for now. When he gets home the NHS will carry out all the neurological testing again and with no language barrier we can be sure of what we're hearing. I guess his kidneys & food intolerence should be a worry but I'm too excited about him coming home.

Thanks for your kind words and thoughts.
