Grandma's Apron ...

Recommended Posts

A friend sent me this today, I think I'd like an apron!

Grandma's Old Apron

REMEMBER making an apron in Home Economics?? Read on:

The History of 'APRONS'

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few,it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ' old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.

Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron

For some reason I only wear an apron on christmas day whilst cooking the christmas dinner and then I forget to take it off when we sit down :lol:

I always wear an apron when I'm cooking. :D

I once remarked that I mislaid it and that I couldn't cook without an apron on.

Him Indoors wittily remarked that I couldn't cook with one on either. :? *tuts*

It took him ages to wash the gravy out of his hair.

aaw I like that! :D

My Granny used to wear aprons for cooking but dust coats when she was cleaning 8)

I don't get on too well with aprons as I don't find they provide enough coverage up front if you see what I mean

BUT I absolutely love tabards, they are the best thing ever! 8) I use mine all the time, also useful when eating something messy that I don't want to spill down my clothes!

I wear an apron when cooking, always. Mind you they are getting a bit tired now..my mum made 2 of mine and she died 3 years ago  .

Since we moved here I wear one more often its SO useful. Pockets are great for pegs, mobile phone, bits that need to go up/down stairs. I have also kept my shopping list in the pocket and added to it during the week :D they put the apron with shopping list in the washing machine :wall: I have collected eggs in it, tomatos courgettes etc.

Aprons are brilliant they even protect your clothes!!!

I love that! :D

I wear an apron - I made one out of the fabric I used for the tablecloth (I'm not OCD :roll: ) - if I'm doing anything really messy.....I wear Carl's

Carl does most of the cooking and has two aprons.....a blue and white striped butchers apron and one which says Lavator Amphorum

I have four aprons and I virtually live in them! I love them all but I don't have enough as they get dirty very quickly and so I have to wash them a lot. I've hinted to my OH that I'd love one of the Omlet pink ones but it hasn't appeared just yet.

My friends are all used to seeing me turn up at school in my pinny! lol

I love that pattern - those aprons are really sweet - I wonder if you can still buy that one...

Lovely story Snowy xxx

Home economics - ooh what memories. I managed to sew a cushion cover to my grandads chair  and it was so neat too. Also made a hideous skirt and other montrosities! Not sure about an apron or "pinny" we call them. AAhh memories - feel a song coming on

I have lots of aprons which I wear when I'm cooking and if I start early in the day, the apron - or pinny - usually stays on all day. I answer the door in it, go down the garden in it, drink coffee, eat dinner, watch TV in it. I love my pinnies. Some are homemade, some bought on a whim and one is a genuine 1940s one which I adore.....but won't wear. It's too special to wear.

Aha! Now, pinny number two is definitely what I need (along the lines of my Granny's dust coat) as I am soooooo messy! :D Maybe not in brown though.

I wonder if you can still get the pattern?

And I wonder if I can persuade someone to make it for me.....(Mum!)
