Another eventful holiday - update on Riley

Recommended Posts

Well, we're back :D .

Unfortunately, we had another disaster on holiday (after ES flying off his bike in Italy last year and breaking his collarbone).

On day 3 of the holiday our dog, Riley, fell off a cliff :( . OH honestly thought he was dead although for some reason I never believed that. When we managed to get down to him it was obvious his leg was badly injured but he seemed alert. We put him inside OH's large rucksack and took a corner each, carrying him back up the cliff face and 2 miles to a lighthouse we had come from. A lovely Dutch family gave us a lift to our car 3 miles away and after some help from a local shopkeeper we got Riley to the nearest vet - 1 1/2 hours drive away  .

The upshot was that he'd dislocated his hip and needed cage rest for 2 weeks :( . We visited him once but he got overexcited so we then just phoned for updates. We managed to pick him up on Wednesday just past. He's looking really well, if a bit thin but has some nerve damage so is really wobbly on his hind legs. They say he should recover completely though.

We were so lucky - I don't know what we'd have done if the outcome hadn't been so good. It's really made us realise how important he is to us.

The holiday was totally different as a result but we still enjoyed it - it's a beautiful part of the world.

I'll need a week to catch up on all the new posts so hope to be back up to speed soon :D .

(I've also found out something family-wise which has thrown me a bit but I'll unburden myself about that in another post.)

My dearly beloved dog Tina RIP was 14 when I lost her and 1 year old when I got her with a dislocated hip which kept dislocating and the owner wanted to put her to sleep as he wanted to breed from her and hip score her. If we had to toggle her hip he could not do this. I asked if I could have her as we had just lost our other labrador and her hip stayed in place for me and only came out one more time a couple of months later on in all the years we had her - she had arthritis in it later in life but hey she was fine. Riley will be back to normal and glad he is ok - must have been scary.

Thanks everyone 8) . It really was one of the worst days we've ever had :( .

He slid a few feet, scrabbling desperately  , then fell, we reckon, about 30 feet onto rocks below :( . I think the fact that they were weathered, smooth rocks saved him as if he'd fallen onto solid rockface he wouldn't have been so lucky :? .

I've already had 2 offers from family & friends for Riley to stay with them when we go away again :lol: .
