xScrunchee
After just replying to a post in the chicken forum regarding holidays-I just wondered whether everyone on here enjoys going on holiday or if some people (like myself) never have a holiday? Redwing
We used to go on holiday a lot but a more expensive house and a ton of pets means we can't afford to go away as much now Sometimes though if you have a nice place to live and are surrounded by your birds and animals and OH there is no reason to go elsewhere, we had two weeks off work a while back and just spent it chilling at home and going on the odd day trip
Egluntyne
We don't bother much. I prefer the odd weekend away.
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Long weekends make it feel like you are having more holidays. I find a week leaves me spending the second half of the week starting to think about having to go home, whereas two weekends doesn't! Cinnamon
We love holidays & they are a really essential part of our life. Hubby works long hours doing physical stuff, & a holiday with its enforced lack of TV,computers & gaming, makes us become a family again. We only got a 4 day break this year due to finances, & next year doesn't look too good either, but we are aware that we only have limited time left when the daughters are going to want to come with us alone,so hope to have a couple of weeks away in 2011. Oh, & hubby & I are already planning our holidays for when the girls have gone
Valkyrie
I haven't had a holiday for some time now. OH and DD went off surfing last year. I was not amused - stayed to look after birds, but mainly to prevent any unsupervised parties that DS may organise in our absence. We went off to OH's cousin and only stayed for one night - mum stayed with DD here. Guess what? DS announces to his mates on facebook that he would have a parent-free house for the weekend and everyone was invited. Imagine his surprise when mum didn't go home, so he asked permission and only 8 people turned up. They aren't bad at all - they are nice young boys and girls, but I don't trust my son (says a lot doesn't it) because so many things get broken because he is so careless. peggotty
My nan always says that the best part of going on holiday is getting home again, and I know exactly what she means!
henriette
Used to love going on holiday, but I now find it so much work spring cleaning the house for the homesitters, getting the garden all up to date and encouraging Mike (husband) that a holiday will be good that I am not so sure any more! Have a daughter and little grandson down in the Pyrenees, so go down there at least once a year. Also another daughter in London with another little grandson, plus a son in London so try to get over there too. Those trips are more or less our holidays now. Would love to vist Norway though one day! Anyone been there?
quickcluck
I am not a great fan of holidays! I much prefer to be home and just do 'stuff' I find the whole holiday thing very stressful
Olly
Glad I'm not the only one. I have decided not to go away in the summer again - I don't like hot weather and don't do beaches anyway, but the main reason is that I can't trust anyone to water the plants properly! I know that sounds really sad, but when you've spent weeks raising plants from seed, nurturing them carefully only to find that a week later they are parched and in some cases damaged beyond recovery, it's really frustrating. Besides, I love spending time in my garden - I'm at work all week and often busy in the evenings and at weekends, so a week just spent at home is la real treat. I spend quite a bit of my annual leave on various charity things that I'm involved with, and I have several long weekends as well. I am however toying with the idea of a holiday in Cuba next spring - before seed sowing time, naturally! I think I owe it to myself to try one more 'proper' holiday before I abandon them altogether and turn into a middle-aged recluse.
Mrs Frugal
After just replying to a post in the chicken forum regarding holidays-I just wondered whether everyone on here enjoys going on holiday or if some people (like myself) never have a holiday? We've not had a holiday since 2004 and that suits me fine. I hate holidays, if I'm completely honest. So much hassle, so much money and for what? A week's memories - and usually a week's rain judging from our experiences! I'd much rather have time at home, sleeping in my own bed thanks. Snowy
Henriette, Norway is beautiful but expensive! My friend lives there, near Trondheim and I love visiting her there! I do enjoy holidays, mainly because I like to introduce the children to new experiences that you don't get if you stay at home. But if it were just me, I would happily spend my time at home
Happy chickens!
Married to a sunlover who can't sit still so we do have several holidays - but he works really hard so deserves them. We're really choosy though - nothing worse than spending all that money and coming home more stressed than you went! I quite like a 'staycation' every now and then myself though - what's the point of getting your home and garden just how you like it and never stopping to enjoy it? BeckyBoo
I love having holidays but I do think they're very hard work - packing for three littlies and the dog AND me, and our holidays are all UK based at the minute so I virtually have to pack their whole wardrobe to account for the weather. Making sure the animals are going to be OK, and I know what you mean about leaving the plants - despite asking my Dad who's 10 doors up to water as well as feed the animals I still lost stuff this summer. A week is fine for me at the minute, but once the kids are a bit older I'd like to do 2 weeks again. I'd also like to do one of those eco holidays, you know where you actually work during your holiday, ditch clearing or bird tagging or something but I think that will have to wait until my own birds have flown their nest! Jules.
*puts hand up* I've just come back from Norway, it's beautiful But the whole packing business/ chooks cleaning out beforehand & then the washing of all my clothes when I got home really stressed me out. Seagazer
I love holidays but must admit on a few of them I have wished I was at home We've had 5 lovely days cruising on the Norfolk Broads this summer and I would love to do that again. It was so peaceful and relaxing for me (OH found it very stressfull driving the boat though) We had a lovely last family holiday a couple of years ago to Spain with all of the children, we knew it was likely to be the last one so it made it feel more special. I don't enjoy the washing when I get back. It was also better when we all went away as my mum used to come and look after the animals and the house would be cleaner than when we went away Now the older kids look after the house and we usually come back to a bit of a tip. Ain't Nobody Here
We always have a 2 week holiday in the summer but we don't like sun & beach holidays or city touristy holidays either. We usually do self-catering in the UK or Europe, and just do pottering about, walking or cycling. Our boys seem happy with those kinds of holidays and so are we . Space Chick
We tend to go somewhere Spanish speaking every year as we are learning Spanish, but always out of season. We also try and go on a big holiday every 3 years, we are going to Las Vegas for Christmas and San Francisco for New Year this year. However, we have a week at home with day trips planned too, so I like both
Laura & CTB
I love going on holiday but get homesick if it's more than 7 days. I love the sun but CTB hates it so we either compromise or take turns deciding where to go. I must admit if the weather's nice I'm quite happy sitting in the garden chook watching ! Patricia W
We store a caravan in Spain( costs £200 per year- less than the cost of getting it there, let alone storing it over here). Drive down twice a year now in May/June and September ( 900miles each way - takes a day and a half, but we have a stop in France and visit a nice restaurant) and then we take it 7km to a secluded sandy beach on a nature reserve, which is an important wetlands centre for birds travelling back and forth to Africa. So we watch storks and swallows hatch their young and go back when they are getting ready to fly to winter quarters. We've been doing this for 25 years and know the locals in the nearest small village well now. Our 4 children still come back there with us whenever they can - but admittedly it's quite nice when they don't! We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary there with sisters and children flying down for a celebratory meal in the local restaurant. That's where I go to in my head when the stress of 60 hour weeks begins to take its' toll. So I think it's more than a holiday, it's an essential part of my life. craftyhunnypie
We love holidays. A nice main holiday, a few weeks throughout the year & lots of weekends away too. They are good for chilling out & also experiencing other cultures. We both love it! Emma.x
Valkyrie
Norway looks so beautiful, majestic yet tranquil. I'd love to go. When I do go away, I can't just sit by a pool or on the beach with a book, I have to explore. My favourite holiday was Canada - we did so much in 3 weeks - Calgary first with the Stampede, Dinosaur Provincial Park, the Rockies and then back to Toronto to visit my cuz (and stay). We visited more rellies and there is still so much to do and see. The Science museum is great. The other favourite is Florida - where we have worked our way down one side and back up the other. Again so much to do and see - last time we didn't do Disney, although we started with Universal for a couple of days. The locals enjoy seeing looney English people going on the rides when it's torrential rain outside - and everyone else is sheltering (well it was warm rain and we had the rides to ourselves - good times, good times). Next on my list is New Zealand - but as I implied before - when DS has left the building.
Alis girls
yes we did the beach thing and chilled by the pool. Old Speckled Hen
I've camped and trekked all over the world but haven't made the Antipodes so that's on the list. Hubby and I try to get in a walking trip once a year and this year we hiked in the Tramuntana mountains in Mallorca at Easter time and we are we are off to the Tunisian Sahara in October to walk with camels and sleep out under the stars for a week. Since I moved up here I feel less inclined to be away for any longer. I'm retired now, the scenery is so beautiful and I feel on holiday all the time. Hubby can retire early in a couple of years so I guess it will be campervan time
