I have been seasick since Monday - wear your hat!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

I am feeling miserable and sorry for myself :( . On Monday morning I decided it would be a good idea to test my horseriding hat. So I fell off my horse, onto my head landing on a big rock! (All my fault, I tried to leap onto Guinness from said rock which was too far away!)

Initially I just thought Id just bashed my head and had sore shoulders and neck. But after a few hours started to feel violently sick, faint, just generally awful. I called OH and by the time she got home I was really quite out of it and acting quite bizare (aparently). She took me to hospital and they kept me in hospital over night and did tests EVERY hour throughout the night.

I was sent home Tuesday morning, but I'm still feeling seasick and finding it hard to do much.

To any horse riders out there I really want to stress the importance of riding hats. I dread to think what state I'd be in now if I had hit that rock with my bare head :eh:

Its never worth the risk just to feel the wind in your hair.

Anybody else had concussion? How long did it last for you?

Gosh Hen, thank goodness you had your hat on and the strap tightened

Never had concussion myself, but DS was kept in the school infirmary with suspected concussion.........fortunately he was ok, but very unimpressed at the regular obs checks

Hope you feel better soon, have you tried taking arnica to help you heal quicker?

Sorry, I can't help with advice on concussion ... BUT ... I have just met someone through work today who has been on a cycling holiday in India. She was sporting a huge graze on one elbow, and I asked 'did you fall off?'. Yes, she did - and she said that if she hadn't been wearing a cycling helmet, she thinks she would have died because her head struck the road - she said in the past she's not bothered with them, but in future she will always wear one.

Your head is often the first thing to hit the ground, and it's not as hard as you think - so please, everybody, wear your helmet even if it isn't glamorous!

Hope you are soon feeling better Henthusiastic, it must be horrid but thank heavens it was not worse.

Eek! Sorry to hear you fell off matey, I think duration of concussion depends on the severity. I also wanted to say something you probably dont want to hear- throw that riding hat away and buy a new one, they only have one good smack in them, and there may now be faults and cracks in the shell you cant see.. :(

Meant to add that earlier & only just home to add it now

This is why buying/using secondhand headgear is such a bad idea........just because they look sound doesn't mean they are :anxious:

Sorry to hear you are feeling so rough, but I'm glad the hat was there to stop any further damage.

A few weeks ago my ES fell off a trampoline at school and banged his head on the floor as he landed. He was initially just shaken but later developed concussion - his main thing was seeing a halo of blue & green light around everything. (School colours, so at least that is something! ) This lasted 4 days, but he was back on the trampoline at the following week's club.

If you follow a similar pattern, then you hopefully will start to pick up tomorrow. Take it easy & whilst there isn't an awful lot they can do for concussion, if you are still feeling dreadful by the weekend, I would get in touch with your GP or Primary Care centre, it may be more than 'just' concussion...

Best wishes

Thanks guys for all your kind words. Yes, I will be getting a new hat. I have always been stronly in favour of wearing riding hats, but now I will value them even more, so yes, as soon as I'm well enough, I'll be off to get a new hat.

Laurmurf; Guinness, responded completely in accordance to his character, he walked a couple of steps to the nearest patch of juicy grass and started to munch  . Bless him.

My memory is also a bit wierd. I'm forgetting lots, which is odd and very un-nerving.

Hen,

Thank goodness you were wearing your hat. I will tell you what happens if you hit rock, or in my case, concrete when you fall off a horse on your head, a skull fracture!

I fractured my skull falling off a bolting horse when I was 14, in the days when riding hats didn't have BSI kitemarks or proper harnesses, just pieces of elastic to keep them on. I had the elastic up over the brim, and on a hot day was lolling with my feet out of the stirrups. I ended up with a week's stay in hospital, and a term off school (which wasn't so bad!)

Normally the hospital discharge you in the care of your doctor - if you are still feeling sick and unwell I would ask his/her advice, and make sure you have someone keeping an eye on you, so you are not on your own.

You have to be really careful with head injuries. I do hope you are feeling better soon, it is rotten luck. I do get cross when I see people riding without riding hats, it is just not worth the risk. It is like driving without a seatbelt on.

Keep smiling :D

Gosh, thank goodness you were wearing your hat. It does annoy me greatly me when I see people riding without hats, or wearing hats with no fastenings (like you sometimes see people wearing out hunting). What use is that if you come off your horse?

Last time I fell off a horse I landed head first, thankfully onto very soft ground, but I would never ever risk riding without a hat. Possible brain damage, paralysis or death are not worth the risk.

Ouch, I hope it clears up soon. It must be very off putting but try not to worry.

A young boy I looked after whilst I was a childminder was running and fell over my dog. He banged his head and began to feel sleepy very quickly. We were up at the hospital at the speed of light and I did feel really bad. His mother said to me that he'd had concussion lots of times - she thought he had a particularly soft head  He stayed in overnight and then had a couple of days off school. There was no long lasting effects for him.

Gd point claret, I will show your post to K re rocky roads. Mind you, I am slowly chomping my way through a fantastic icecream cake thingy she has made  so Im not doing too bad.

Well, yesterday I had a very quiet day, did very little and didn't feel toooo bad. SO todaym, I thought I would try a very gently short walk to our local shop: MISTAKE!! I felt realy really awful. Thought I was going to fall over and/or throw up. The strong sunshine did really horrid stuff to my vision. I only just made it there anld back and it has taken me a few hours for my head to settle back down again. :( I am so rubbish at being poorly. I seem to think I can fight myself better and I only make it worse :(
