Snow

Recommended Posts

Meant to snow again today, i haven't stepped foot outside since Monday, apart from to sort out the chickens. We haven't got it that bad but i have a real phobia of falling over and of the cold. I have turned off the heating to rooms not being used so that the others warm quicker and i have a flask of coffee next to me. I'm such a wuss

Well, we haven't had any snow here today, but it had dropped to -12 last night when we came out of the Lowry theatre. Mu OH is having to drive to morcambe and clitheroe and back to macc today - I really hope he'll be ok as he is only in his works car which is a Golf GTI - I would have preferred him to take my 4x4, but he seemed to think he would be fine.Does anybody know what the weather is doing over there?

According to **Metcheck** both places look OK....not snowing at least.

Not convinced of Metchecks accuracy lately, we haven't had any snow according to them.

A beautiful morning here, -6deg when I got up at 6am, and that's in the town centre!

No more snow overnight, but it's all icy now and I hear that we're due more today. Just lent my wheelbarrow to a colleague whose dog knackered his cruciate ligament in the snow yesterday and needs to get back home from the vet; their car is snowed in (they live on a very steep hill) and he's too big to carry.

No gritting going on here except for a private contractor who gritted the driving test centre at the back of our office. Our road is like a ski ramp, perfect snow for skiing in fact :D I walked into town with the doglet yesterday evening after work, and there was a water leak in a town centre car park, it was flowing out into the main road - woth no grit left it will be an ice rink this morning

Rosie is off school again, although she could easily walk in as it's only a mile away. I have left her with instructions to check the chicken and bunny water hourly and heat up their snuggle safes. I shovelled the front path last night and salted it, I suggested that Rosie might want to do the pavement outside today to keep warm.

Still heaps here, in fact it hasn't melted at all & now has a nice icy crust on top.

I am very rural & my road is horrendous, but I have plenty of supplies in so its not a disaster & there is a good little shop a short trudge away :D

I am bored though. The house is really clean & tidy (something about the snow light makes it all look grubby!),& there is nothing much to do :?

Not going anywhere but thought I'd defrost the car.

Diesel warning light on when I turned ignition key so stopped before I turned the key fully.

What temperature does diesel gel? It's -8 on weather station and -10 on the car thermometer.

In theory, -9.5C is enough to start it gelling. However, it depends on what additives are in the deisel (which am guessing you're pretty unlikely to know!). The paraffin type hydrocarbons turn to wax and clog the filter at much below -10C, which can mean that the car would idle but not get enough RPM to go. HOWEVER... it depends on exactly what hydrocarbons are in teh deisal, and what has been added. You can buy stuff that will make the gelling temperature much lower: try Halfords or a local garaage if you can get there and are worried.

If it has gelled it shouldn't damage your engine; once it warms up all would be fine.

Well we've still only got an inch or so but it keeps snowing on and off this morning.

Here is a photo of Cookie speeding around the garden at about 50 miles an hour!

and one of her standing guard over the girls. The foxes were so noisy last night, she's a very good guard dog.

When I moved here first and lived in a little terraced cottage I used to put the washing out on a bright sunny morning to be met with warnings from the neighbours that it would rain :? and it did :(

I now have a quick look to see if anybodyelse's washing is out. That usually works.

The foxes must be more of a danger at the moment because a lot of the smaller animals that they prey on must be in hiding, so they must be hungry :?

We had -9 at 8am this morning and when I went out to full the glugs with warm water my hands and fingerless gloves were sticking to everything. My old girls were sound asleep still and didn't want to come out. I had to unstick the egg port to check they were ok at which point they staggered out for some food and water then went back to bed.

We are forecast further snow flurries later today, time will tell if the children get another day off tomorrow.

That's next year's Christmas card pictures sorted then Cinnamon and Seagazer

It was -13c in Manchester last night and is currently -7c. We have had little or no thawing, and because of the temperatures last night any gritting was useless so the roads are worse today than yesterday and there is less public transport.DD has two AS level modules on Monday morning and is hoping to get to revision classes at school tomorrow - asssuming the teachers can get in for them. Any teachers out there know what happens if the school has to be shut on Monday as well as they have forecast more snow for us on Sunday night :( And the condenser pipe on our new boiler has frozen twice in the last few days and we keep having to defrost it

Minus 12 here overnight and minus 9 when we got up - it's warmed up now to minus 6 :D

We must have had foxes around all last night as Jazz would not stop barking - a bit worrying as the electric wire surrounding the hens area is under the snow at the moment :?

More snow while I was at work so we finished at noon.

Brightened up this afternoon and I desperately needed petrol so decided to go to town. Skidded on our lane and ended right across it with the front of the car in the field. the lane is only about 2 foot wider than my Fiat Panda. Luckily Jack was with me so he had to get out and push. I had about 2 feet of lane behind me and then the 6 foot drop into the ditch. I was trying to reverse while Jack pushed from the front of the car, the car was sliding forwards and I was scared that it would slide onto him. Took us about 10 minutes to get the car back on the lane. We had to carry on along the lane and onto the road to find a safe place to turn around, I just wanted to get home. Car slid along the lane again but this time heading for the ditch, I was so glad to get home.

I've no confidence left now so I will not be going out in my car again until the snow and ice has gone. I will walk the 3 miles to work.

My coal delivery has just arrived .... sort of. The lorry is stuck in the snow and ice on the lane and the two men are having to take all the sacks of coal off the lorry before they try to move :( the lorry looks to have a full load as well :(

About 9am yesterday

Anyone want a nice cold bottom?

P1020451.jpg

Lunchtime and it's melting underneath

I wondered what the curve was - snow on the washing line!

P1020462.jpg

P1020459.jpg

Lets get to work (actually the wooden edges were removed because it worked better without)

All hands on deck

We found out that the trees did protect us a fair amount but where the snow has been able to drift it reaches our knees - particularly at the end of the close. Murray met a farmer on his digger and he has been lowering the level of the snow on the road at the back of us and some cars have been going past. What a lovely man - no sign of the council clearing it and our road is still snowbound.
