Cinnamon
This happened to me a few years ago - twice in fact. just keep calm,go along to the appointment, which will be at the hospital & they will examine your breast first of all. Both times I then had a scan & the last time I have a very tiny needle put into the lump & some fluid taken out. It really didn't hurt a bit,& I am a right wuss! I then had to wait a couple of hours to get the results back, which were all clear. I do sympathise, because its awful just not knowing, but once you have been seen its a huge weight off. Very few of the lumps they see are anything sinister
Egluntyne
All the best. I too have had a similar worry a couple of times and had fluid aspirated after scans etc. I know how you are feeling. xx
Chucky Mama
Poor you. The waiting is awful no matter what people say to try and reassure. I found a lump when we were away on holiday some years ago (typically it was the first day). As I was quite young and we hoped quite a low risk we waited until we got back (was completely distracted for the whole holiday). Dr said he thought it was a benign lump but advised removal anyway. All went to plan but didn't stop the worrying. I don't know how old you are but you will almost certainly I think have scans and a biopsy. My SIL had a big scare last year and we really thought that is was going to be bad news but she was cleared and diagnosed as having 'lumpy breast tissue'. chick wiggle
Nothing helpful for you Im afraid, but I can imagine how scary and worrying it must be. Your doing everything right anyway and thats a good first step. Stay strong hun and know that we are all with you and praying for good results Good Luck
The Dogmother
I'm another one with 'lumpy breast tissue' (what there is of them) but I had a lump that stayed. It turned out to be nowt but a fatty lump and it's still there 10 years on. We'll all tell you not to worry as most breast lumps turn out to be benign, but you'll worry anyway; it's only natural. We're with you on this one Freddie, fingers crossed for you. I am just glad to hear that you are checking regularly
Fizzle Knit
Dear Freddie, I had a similar experience several years ago. Found a lump in my breast - phoned the GP's who booked me in the same day, then the GP gave me an "urgent" referral, i.e. I was guaranteed an appointment at the breast clinic within 14 days. The fact that the GP had acted so promptly scared me in itself! On the day itself I had a physical examination and a mammogram, and the doctor declared it as benign. I did not need any invasive treatment. Those 2 weeks were really scary for me even though I knew that something like 9 out of 10 lumps do turn out to be benign. One thing I found very helpful was a charity called something like Breast Cancer Care, they had a helpline which I phoned and they explained the process that would happen. I do feel for you, the waiting period is horrible! Take care, and find some nice things to do over the next week or so to try and take your mind off it xx Link is http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk/ (It deals with breast health generally, not just cancer)
dippy bird
My friend has just had the same scare and she is fine. Fingers crossed that all is well with you too. Jo
PurpleTree
I found a lump when I was 21 (I instantly burst in to tears as soon as I found it), went straight to the docs, he examined me and thought it was nothing to worry about but referred me to the hospital. I think I went within a week, they first did an ultrasound, then put a needle in the lump to draw off some liquid. I had to go back about a week later for the results, I was terrified and imagining all sorts. Luckily it was nothing to worry about and something they call a breast mouse, because it moves around quite a lot when you feel it. I've still got it, but it's not as prominent. Good luck, I know it's scary and it's hard not to worry, but at least you've seen the doctor and your on your way to getting it sorted. Sending hugs
Chickendoodle
I also had a benign lump removed about 21 years ago - didn't seem to do scans then, just tried to aspirate with a needle (to see if it was a cyst) and then booked me in for surgery. The doctors were very reassuring that they thought it was benign from the start and I am lucky in that I don't worry about things until I have to so the experience was actually fine for me. The surgery was very minor and little pain afterwards. I had just gone through a painful divorce, my DH having left when my daughters were 2 and 5 months and I am convinced that stress had given me a lump (probably no medical evidence for this but hey, something has to cause it). Good luck and I can only reiterate what everyone else has said, that most lumps are benign x
whoopsie
HI Freddie I can only add the same as everyone else and wish you luck at your appointment. The medical profession moves much faster these days when it comes to breast problems, both to relieve stress and more importantly if there IS a problem to get it treated as soon as possible. Obviously I hope that the lump is totally benign, but please be comforted that if treatment is needed, you will be assessed and cared for rapidly. Seagazer
Freddie, lumpy boobs are surprisingly common. I've had them for years now. I've been scared witless everytime, so there is no point in saying don't worry to you. I've got fibrousadenomas (or some sort of spelling like that) and cysts in my boobs. I've had scans, mammograms and needle aspirations. Thankfully where I go they tell you straight away what it is. I was told by one man doing the scan that stress is a major player in cysts in boobs, they asked if I'd had a stressfull year I had by then. I wish you all the luck, and we'll all be thinking of you. chickencam
Best of luck with your appointment. A friend of ours has just been through this she is 29 and it turned out to be fine. She found her lump on Boxing day and it ruined Cristmas for her and of course it was harder for her to get an appointment. She has been told now that all in fine though. Groovychook
Thinking about you Freddie... My sister found a lump in her breast at the end of the summer. Thankfully, after having it checked out, it turned out to be nothing to be concerned about. It was a very worrying time though. Hope everything goes well with your appointment... Sending lots of positive vibes up to you! xx
hilda-and-evadne
struggling a bit with this.have just been to dr, as have lump. have urgent app to come in next 10 days, but no idea what happens at it. please can you give me some info. feel sick all the time, but that's nerves. Good start to 2010 As Claret says, most lumps are found to be benign but it is now NHS policy to move quickly - well, as quickly as the NHS ever does - to ascertain what a breast lump is. If you wanted to have the "needle test" done sooner (for the sake of your nerves), and if the household budget will stand this, you might be able to ask your GP to refer you to wherever would do the test privately, and the test results would be sent to your GP. In my case, in 1991, it was good and bad news. Bad, that the lump was not benign. But good in that I had found it very early, when it was very small. freddie
Thank you, all, it's reassuring, believe me. i so desp want the phone to ring and an appointment time, to just get on with it. had several gins last night, and feel a bit jaded today just trying to re jig our life ins policies, so have had to put a hold on that, just in case... life is never straightforward, is it!! You are all so kind, and so helpful, a real lifeline, more than you know
Alis girls
I posted this am but dont think it recorded. You may need a mammogram and scan and possbily biopsy as described where they take cells off and send away. Then they should hae ideas if they need to act and if so what. Take someone with you for reassurance and good luck Ali x
Valkyrie
I had my first mammogram in 2008 just after my birthday - they sure know how to give you a nice birthday surprise. After being moulded into unbelievable shapes for the x-ray I thought that was it, but no had to go back because of a shadow. This involved having a biopsy done - which is like being stapled! You don't feel anything because they give you a local - but I like to look and see what's going on (much to their surprise). Unfortunately they just missed the offending tissue and I had to go back again the following week for a double check. Another staple - kerplunk - and more tissue taken away for close perusal. Luckily it was nothing sinister, and now they know it's there they can mark it as seen and sorted. Really it doesn't hurt - apart from the manipulation - which is quite minor considering some aches and pains. I didn't take anyone - basically because I prefer to deal with things on my own. But the nurses are great and they really do put you at ease with any embarrassment you may feel - all part of the course - we were laughing all the time. So try not to worry (easier said than done, I know) and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
bluekarin
I just wanted to add my good wishes to your for your appointment. It is such a worrying thing to find a lump. I thought I found one when I was in my teens, but it was a skin tag I've not had to go through anything like that yet but my best friend has had a biopsy a couple of times and hers have been fine, and from reading everyone's posts on here, it sounds like most of the time its nothing. Here are some (((hugs))) to keep you going
chelsea
I've had a lump too a couple of years ago. Saw local GP and was referred to the hospital within a week. Had examination and ultrasound, they didn't see the need to give me a mammogram though as they said I was too young.. The process was fine but the worst thing was the way the clinic made you undress in a little cubicle and then put your clothes in a shopping basket and then you had to sit in a general hospital corridor (with your basket ) with a tiny cape on covering your bits Fingers crossed for you Freddie - I am sure you will be fine, try not to worry
coco
I've had a couple of lumps over the years. One when I was younger which they insisted had to be removed asap and i got told although it was probably benign I would have problems later in life and wouldn't be able to breastfeed if I had any kids. the day I went in to have it removed they found out I was pregnant so it stayed. Three breastfed kids and some years later it disappeared on its own. the second was a few years ago and after having it checked out was told it was a cyst, its since disappeared. On both occassions the hospital staff were fantastic and really looked after me.
Olly
I know it probably doesn't help to have all these people saying 'don't worry, it's almost certainly benign' - of course you will be worrying till you have it done. Can only add to what others have said - the fact that your GP acted so promptly is not because he/she is concerned, but because it's standard procedure these days. I have private healthcare, but tbh I would have been dealt with nearly as fast at my local hospital where they have a breast clinic - going private just meant I could have an appointment out of work hours (and the doctor warms his hands before he examines you! ) My lump is under my arm, and I had a mammogram - nothing to worry about as others have said, just a bit uncomfortable - and an ultrasound scan, and was told it was 99% certain to be a blocked lymph node. The doctor said I could have a biopsy if I was still worried, but he didn't recommend it, and I decided to take his advice. This is a timely reminder to all of us to check regularly, though. Hope you soon get an appointment.

Alis girls
Excellent Freddie - I'm glad its through before the weekend. So that worry is off your mind. I urge you to take OH, friend or someone for support. I'm sorry I dont know your age but you sound very young. Also jot down any questions. I'm sorry about the anniversary of your mums death. My mum died in 1995 (March time) and although we had our ups and downs I miss her as a gran for my boys. She died the yr ES was born. It does get less painful but you dont forget and esp now you are so worried with your own health problem. Wish you a nice weekend and have a sherry for me (a little one)
