Redwing
We have had a chimney fire this evening the fire brigade have just been here for an hour sorting it out - a passing dog walker saw 5ft flames coming out the chimney and called them, hubby was unaware of the fire until the dog walker knocked on the door! We had a fire a couple of months back when the fuse box caught fire in the night The chimney had been swept this winter and the fuse box was new-ish too, I am feeling pretty down right now
Olly
Oh Tasha - poor you! Thank heavens someone saw it. I wonder why it caught fire, if it was swept recently? Hope there's not too much mess to clear up - it could have been much worse.

Joojoo
Crikey I'm so pleased that you're all ok and well done to the dog walker for spotting it. I hope there isn't too much of a mess for you to deal with. x
BERTIE MCSQUIRTY
i had one 5 yrs ago when my LO was a tiny baby, i was bathing her and didnt notice the smoke, but it frightened the hell out of me when i saw smoke pouring out the roof, the chimney had been swept the week before, but it was dry material that ignited on the curve. a frightening experience anyhow
Fur 'n' Feathers
Hope all's okay now Redwing. Did the fire brigade have any thoughts about how it might have started, given you'd recently had it swept?

Redwing
It was a birds nest, we hadnt used the chimney for a few weeks. When we had the chimney uncapped when we moved in the builder said there was no need for a bird guard

Redwing
I suppose it's a bit too charred for soup? We never saw it - the FB blasted the fire out from below apparently (I was still on my way home from work when they arrived) In lieu of birds nest soup we have just eaten a whole trifle straight out of its plastic bowl as we missed out on tea
Valkyrie
Hmmmm, two firemen sessions in such a short space of time - thinking of moving near you.
sunshinesupernova
tbh - bird guards on cowls can be more of a hazard than a help. In many cases, they can be prone to blocking with leaves and debris - so no better off than an ordinary cowl. Steel top cowls are good. They're like upturned buckets with air vents from underneath. They prevent down-draught and there is no way birds can get in...
Griffin
In lieu of birds nest soup we have just eaten a whole trifle straight out of its plastic bowl as we missed out on tea Every cloud has a silver lining!
