Snow

Egluntyne.....or anyone else......can I have a road report for Doncaster? Son in Law is back up there tomorrow and coming back Wednesday.......he hopes!

No more snow here but very cold. According to my DD the pavements in town are sheet ice and lethal :? I really want to go to Aquafit tomorrow morning but don't know whether we'll be able to get out of the drive yet - we'll need the salt and grit I think.

Hubby travelled to Evesham on Friday with girls then over to Brigend on Thursday to pick ujp our new to us Cube :dance::dance: and then back to his sisters only to be totally snowed in. He's hoping to get up to Cannock to his brother's but not holding out much hope.

I just hope they can all come home before Christmas, I'm really missing them all. :(

I'm trying to decide if to risk getting the train from Oxford to Birmingham tomorrow where our main office is or drive into a more local office just off the M4 in Reading. Not sure which is worst- risking a repeat of a 6 hour journey back by train to Oxford like last Thursday ( and that is, if we don't have frozen points on the way up) or drving over the Downs and then slipping/sliding around an industrial estate by the M4!

Maybe I'll work from home ...

The forecast for Birmingham tonight is minus 15, so I think the points might be frozen again :? There was considerable disruption on the local trains yesterday and today because of the weather. I walked alongside the railway this morning (on the canal towpath!) and the overhead cables were sparking like mad when a train went past. If you can work from home then go for it!

Well, we woke up yesterday to about 4" of the white stuff :D

I was then kicking myself that we didn't do the shopping the night before as we had no potatoes or pasta to do any dinners. Hubby and I managed to get out to get some food in the afternoon, but on the way back from Lidils trying to get up our road was a nightmare! We just kept slipping. Luckily some neighbours were outside, watching  then tried to help us out. In the end, after much pushing and failing, they helped us carry all our shopping up the hill and then helped us push the car up the road  Fabulous neighbours! Then hubby and I were due to go out with some of our friends for a Christmas dinner. Thankfully my dad was able to come over to look after the kids and we had a hairy walk into town and back on an ice path and my muscles ache so much today as I was so tense during the walk.

Looks like we have more coming in tonight or tomorrow morning. Which would be lovely if I had got everything we need for Christmas ie the last few pressies I still need to get, and some booze  I shall just pray and hope I can get out there.

Keep safe everyone :)

We have been really happy since we decided that there would be no travelling for us until New Year. We went out for a lovely walk in the snow this morning and have spent some eye opening people watching time watching idiots going past our house on the main road (ungritted and with an inch of black ice on it). We have seen joggers, joggers in shorts with dogs and very red legs, OAP's on bikes with big shopping bags on each handle bar, postmen on bikes in shorts, people driving too fast, lads standing outside the back doors on either side of cars skiing along the road. We have seen all sorts today. One of the funniest was a very slow moving lorry this evening, it was an Iceland lorry

It is -10 here and the roads are lethal, my Grandad who lives 7 miles outside Oxford reckons that he has a foot of snow, he has not seen it like this since just after they moved in 35 years ago.

Stay warm and safe everyone and don't really don't go out unless it is an emergency.

More snow overnight, quite a lot.

I don't think DD will be able to go to the Asthma clinic today :( Just hope I can get another appointment with a shorter waiting time than 6 weeks.

We are well stocked up with food for us and the furry and feathered family. The only thing I do not have is bottled water, we had frozen pipes for a time again on Friday evening and Saturday morning. The electricity went off yesterday and when it eventually came back on the lights were dimming for the rest of the day. We have plenty of candles and torches. The woodburner would be useful for heating simple meals on.

OH always tells me I am full of gloom and doom about the bad Winter weather but yesterday he said we must sit down and have a plan for next Winter  He thinks that we are in for a good few Winters with this type of weather. He was talking about buying a quad bike with a snow plough attachment so we can plough the lane ourselves. A grit bin is also on his list. We are a 3 car family and I think that one of the cars should be a 4x4, OH now agrees with this. Too late for anything to be done this Winter as snow poughing quad bikes will be in use as will 4x4's.

We had to give up our 4x4 in October :( - the plan is to replace it with an older one sometime.... but not yet.... :(

Our nearest weather station is Pershore which reported -18 overnight  - my weather station won't tell me - the two parts have stopped talking to each other, I now have the indoors bit outside in the porch. We have freezing fog as well now.

We have an all time overnight low now! -13.1 from our Lidl weather station. -12 was the lowest back in February.

Another weather alert for Devon and Cornwall, which usually makes it way to us eventually. More heavy snow on the way!

The drive to Scotland for Christmas is looking more and more unlikely. :(

Hope you DD gets to the asthma clinic ali.

Thanks for the link Ali. That is another website I will be watching like a hawk! :D

We usually take the M5, M6, then A70 to Ayr. The A70 is now named 'the sheep road' as it winds through stunning scenery with sheep everywhere :lol: That is the part I am most worried about. The fact that OH is insisting we take his BMW too :roll: Whilst I appreciate the heated seats for my dodgy back, I would rather take my Mini - less chance os getting stuck in ice/snow.

Good luck with the clinic!

Have you managed to re-arrange the asthma clinic Ali?

I have cancelled the appointment for today. Not worth the risk of trying to get the car on the road or phoning for a Taxi, I wouldn't want to put any one else as risk either. The receptionist at the surgery has told me the roads are not good in the town. The earliest date I could get at that surgery was 31st January  but I have managed to get an appointment at a village branch surgery for the 17th January. I am sure that if the GP thought DD had Asthma we wouldn't have had to wait 6 weeks for the appointment :? , I hope not anyway. DD is not wheezing or short of breath but does have a horrible Dog/Seal barking cough.

Snow go away :twisted::twisted:

I am waiting for a plumber to come and look at our frozen pipes today not happy :( .

We do have cold water coming in the the main kitchen tap but it seems to have frozen under the kitchen floor!!!

Our kitchen has always been very cold but it has 3 outside walls and so was told that was the reason however upon investgation of OH lying on the floor and taking the skirting board bit from infront of the cupboards off we have found a big draft. I put the themometer on the floor and it said it was 3 degrees so no wonder our kitchen is always cold!!

Having to use a bucket to flush the loo is not ideal but at least the heating is ok and we have some water even if it is cold.

Going to see my lovely neighbour in a bit to have a shower hope it thaws soon but I think that I may be in for a long wait.

Oh and I was supposed to be picking up my new car today but cancelled that because even if I could get it I wouldn't drive it so will just have to wait.
