Chickens and snow * please post about them here

Recommended Posts

Is it ok to let the chickens out in the snow? we have had several inches here . I have their run covered so there is now snow in there but they usually free range all day so are wanting to get out... I just don't want to risk frost-bite on their feet !

mine eventually went out but "high-stepped" their way through the snow and very quickly went back into the run!

The snow is rapidly melting now and they are back out paddling through the slush.... I fear a very messy garden once this weather is over!

I let mine out, then took up the bacon rinds when we finished breakfast. It was so funny to watch them running around in the snow, the chase for the rind really was on  . I had not given them bacon rind before. I shall be doing it again, and taking the video camera with me. It was so funny, the snow however did not seem to worry them at all. They have a covered run, but they are all out standing in the white stuff  .

As mentioned above bless our garden once this weather is over. It was already a mud bath, and the hens have not even been here a month yet  !

LOl maybe they thought it was a worm, i didn't think they were supposed to have animal products!

I read on the forum about someone giving there chooks bacon rind and there loved it. Which was why I gave it a try! The doggies who normally get there treats did not look so impressed  !

I will have to look into if they are meant to have it or not, as I did not think of that, I just guess they will not eat it if they don't like? They did so love it though! :D

Mine were doing the same when I let them out, they hopped straight on the edge of the raised bed and were walking along it, one after the other. When they reached a corner they panicked slightly and the leader turned to go back the same way they came from, but didn't get anywhere as she was faced with the other chook. They are so funny and make me laugh every day! :D

Mine were all brave enough to venture up to the patio. When I went to put them away I was surprised to only find Bella by the back door. Then I realised that she was too chicken to face the snow covered steps. It was hilarious watching her peer over the top and then run backwards. I ended up picking her up and taking her down the garden.

Mine aren't keen on the snow either!!

Yesterday some had got in the 'door' of there Omlet run (the Omlet cover plus a clear tarp is in the rest of the run), when I opened the Eglu door they usually hurtle down to the water and pellets but thay stood there looking suspicously at the snow (not that much in there!).

Then Joni decided that she would risk getting some breakfast and cautiously approached the Grub from the end of it.

The other 2 were like little old ladies with their arms crossed - muttering away - as if they were saying' oh, she's going for it! But I don't like the lookof it....' Carlotta has quite a deep 'voice' and sort of 'trumpets' sometimes (?Pingu?!! ), so she was doing that in agreement.

They didn't venture out in it and took themselves off to bed in a huff at 3.30ish!

Day before that, they ventured out but 'flew' out of the run (so as not to touch the snow I guess) to an are of decking with no snow on. They then made their way up to the patio by going along by the fence and other ares that were relatively clear of snow!

They are so funny - they bring so much pleasure!
