Chickens and snow * please post about them here

Recommended Posts

Our are utterly unimpressed!!

They were hopping between bits without snow and skipping over it to get to

bits of grain. 2 of them slipped down an icy area and looked like penguins. I had to clear them a path with boiling water in the end so they'd come outside!

Much happier now it's gone, had a really joyous run around yesterday morning.

Of the five girls only Gertie was brave enough to leave the cleared area and ventured onto the snow yesterday, then I had a real scare this morning as she was really limping. I picked her up and realised her feet were caked in bedding, they have bliss in the elgu and easibed in the run. Had to cut lots of it away although afterwards thought It might have been more sensible to soak it off in warm water? Hope it's not uncomfortable as the feathers regrow. She must have gone in with wet feet last night so I dried them with paper after their freetime today.

My girls just don't like the snow

I cleared a path, can't stand compacted snow, to make it easier to get from the house into the garden and down to the Chickens without falling over!!. Normally they're confined to the WIR during the bad weather but can FR whilst I'm changing water, adding new food, poo picking etc. But instead of being glad of the freedom they just kept to the path in single file

They are lovely girls

From the front; Lemon Cuckoo Orpington, Buff Orpington, Lemon Cuckoo Orpington, Buff Orpington, Heritage Skyline, Fenning White, Mandlesham Blue and finally (although you probably missed her) the Gold Laced Orpington (she the black blob at the far end of the line - the photo isn't great)

Hi mine don't seem to mind it at all. Ebay (the one that was white) has a very muddy comb as I keep smothering it in Vaseline, not sure where she keeps finding the mud as we have had snow on the ground for two weeks. Phoebe has her lovely winter feathers. I decorated the run with plastic baubles most of which are now strewn around the garden.

Mine don't like it when it is snowing, but don't mind scrubbaging around in the snow on a nice sunny day like today. They were all very keen on coming out, even the banties! I cannot think what they are finding to eat, or why they prefer it to a lovely dry run with plentiful Garvo food and treats, but they seem to like being out.

Hi interested in how all your chooks are doing. I have 6 ex batts. 3 Lucy, Boo and George are well established from May 10 but got 3 new ex batts mid November, unusually two Amber Links (Moon and Hannah) and one Colombian Blacktail (Shrek). Named by grandchildren. The blacktail looks similar to the other old hybrids and has fought her way to run with the old 3. The amber links are blondes. They are not in good shape and one is practically featherless and lost her back claw in first run of snow. Trying to integrate them has been hard in the snow. They did have separate house for a week then I put them together. Hannah at bottom of pecking order wont come out of roost in snow so I put water and food in then the other blonde joined her and started pecking her. So I brought Hannah into my conservatory where she sits happily with my two cats. Not sure what to do with her. She just gets chased and pecked while the others are quite robust. The other blonde has no tail feathers so cannot jump up to roost so I have to put her in each night. I let them go where they want and the 4 brown ones go out in the snow and dont seem at all bothered. I have a large wooden shed and leave the door open so they can wander in to get out of snow but they just run around in the snow most of the time. I have got cube with extension and have it completely covered to protect from snow and have filled ground with wood chips but they hate being shut in. They freerange in my garden all day until about 5pm. I am still getting 3 eggs a day. Any ideas about integrating them will be helpful. Thanks. Sapphichick.

I think its fine for chickens to eat bacon rind - after all what are worms, snails and insects if not meat? I grew up on a farm and the chickens happily ate anything they got their little beaks on! I have found mine fighting on the lawn over a dead mouse and a slow-worm - both of which were readily devoured and thoroughly enjoyed - the chickens were none the worse for their chosen delicasies!
