the-real-tinkerbell
hi all sorry ive not been on for a while been very busy i have sadly lost all of my ex batts in a attack by 2 dogs off my street ,they managed to get the back off the go and i came home to find them in my WIR surrounded by carnage , i am heart broken to say the least , i have said before that my my ex batts were my favs even more so my little merideath she was really sickly when i got her and she transformed in to a beautifull lady to make matters worse my 3yr old saw it all . i reported it to the dog wardens but apparently its not a crime to let your dogs run the streets killing peoples pets and destroying peoples property what if my children had been in the garden ,i cant even bear to think about it . i have decided i wont be using my GO again as i dont think it is safe or secure enough im going to have to save for another classic i really do hope my batty girls enjoyed the time they had with us out of the cage and im so sorry i couldnt kepp them safe R.I.P bailey merideath and christina kellie

Redwing
How awful I am so sorry It is worth speaking to Omlet as recommended, what sort of dogs were they to be able to remove the back of the Go? if they were big strong dogs I guess they would have been more than forceful to get in to most coops though I'm surprised that no crime has been committed - I would certainly write a note to the people asking for them to replace the Go (if it was damaged) and for the cost of replacing the hens

chris_21
how awful thats very sad. but it is against the law for a dog to enter someones premises as the dog is tresspassing and you have every right to report the owner of the dog to the police and the owner will receive a fine and be ordered to pay to replace your chickens so i would get on the phone to the police. as i live on a farm i on the right to shoot any tresspassing animal. the-real-tinkerbell
the police said animal attacks on other animals noting can be done law wise ,do you by anychance have some thing i could quote to them ?
sparkysmum
Oh tinkerbelle, I'm so, so sorry to hear this terrible thing. I can't begin to imagine how you must feel. Have you tackled the dog owners directly, do they know what has happened.Any responsible dog owner would be utterly horrified to think their dogs could do this & I hope would pay for new "Go" & cost of replacing hens I hope this will be the case. I am also astonished at the police's reaction, I don't understand their definition of "crime" at all. Words fail me, take care Alli xx
Sageandonion
Very sorry to hear this Tinkerbelle, RIP your little ladies. I'm not sure whether this covers it but have a look at the Dangerous Dogs Act s3 1991, the part about reasonable apprehension that it (the dog) will injure a person when on private land. The fact that the dogs killed your chickens in what sounds like a frenzy might arguably amount to reasonable apprehension that they could harm a person. Also look at complaints under the Dogs Act 1871. Not got access to law books at home so had a quick google search.
jess1merlin
Really sorry to hear about your chickens. If those dogs were worrying livestock in the countryside the farmer would be within his rights to shot them, surely chickens are classed as livestock, so how can the police say no crime has been committed. It sounds to me as if they can't be bothered, I think I might complain to them in writing and ask for a written response.
the-real-tinkerbell
im reading the dog act now and its only worrying livestock if im on farm land and im not but im going to phone the pc back after the holidays as defra says If your dog injures another person’s animal, or an owner of an animal reasonably believes that they could be injured if they intervened to protect their animal from your dog, then an offence may be committed the dogs were in a frenzy and i had to phone my dad to come and get them out of my garden so i guess that means that i reasonably belive it wold hurt me if i interviend and i told the police that i had to phone for some one to get them out of my garden when i reported it . so im going to speak to them again as i feel like im being fobbed off
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Is this site of use: http://www.endangereddogs.com/EDDRDogLaw.htm Sometimes coppers don't actually know the law. Plum
So sorry, what an awful thing to happen when you thought they were safe. I do think it's worth pursuing to prevent it happening again to you or someone else
coco
So sorry, can you trace the dogs owner. i was told buy a police officer that it is an offence to have a dog off lead and out of control in a public place, that must include the road you live in. Mercedes55
I'm really sorry to hear about your poor girls Unfortunately the law is an ass when it comes to 'dangerous dogs'. We had an incident with our chocolate labrador a few months ago when a dog around the corner ran out of it's owner's garden and attacked our dog so badly that we had to take her to the vets and it cost us £80 for her to be treated. We called the Police as soon as it had happened and they went to interview the owners of the dog who then denied it was their dog. The Police said there was nothing they could do as the dog wasn't on the list of 'dangerous dogs'.

Yes Coco that's my understanding of the "law" too. My experience is that the police can be a little arbitrary with which laws they are currently prioritising and that is not completely their fault with new legislation every minute covering Alpacas to Zebras, but ..... WitchHazel
Have a look at this page here - the first leaflet http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/cruelty/documents/ddogslawyouleaflet.pdf The wording of this really seems to suggest that an offence has been committed...
