Waitrose Ducks. *warning distressing images*

Recommended Posts

Wow.

At least Waitrose have withdrawn the product off the shelves - they won't want to be damaged by this. Makes you question though how often Waitrose goes to see where their products are produced to see the environment for themselves? Maybe it is often and the company are good at concealing - but would be interested to know...

Thanks for that WarrensWorld.

I'm not veggie. I really enjoy my meat, I try to source properly raised food but I find myself eating less and less anyway. I haven't eaten duck in years because of the bad reputation of its rearing. I'm really fed up of the way we, as consumers, are regularly lied to.I must say I have always trusted Waitrose.......middle class image and all that I suppose but no supplier can monitor its producers constantly.

That link has made my mind up. Only MY eggs and MY chooks from now on. At least they've had a good life.

Thanks MODS for *warning distressing images* I should have put a warning there myself. Eileen is really upset, and as fired off emails to waitrose and the RSPCA.... Those "handelers" really need to be prosecuted. The owner didn't know what was going on!, so he didn't see the skips!.,,,

Apologies if I've upset anyone, I just thought you should know.

Fair play to Waitrose, we've just received this email from them.

"Thank you for your e-mail. We are appalled by the footage taken at Hall Farm and as soon as we saw it we suspended this supplier whilst we carry out a full investigation. We have sent a vet to the farm to ensure the welfare of other ducks on the site and we are staying very close to this situation. The behaviour seen on the film is totally unacceptable and completely goes against the high welfare standards Waitrose expects of its farmers. Green Label Farms, who contract the team of catchers shown in the video, is also taking this matter very seriously and has suspended those involved while it undertakes its own investigation. We appreciate your concerns regarding this matter. I would like to thank you again for taking the trouble to bring this matter to our attention, and providing us with the opportunity to clarify our position. Regards, Katy Kelsey Waitrose Customer Sales and Support."

I do trust Waitrose. I think they have a lot to lose over this if they are not seen to act quickly and decisively - which they appear to be doing.

If I can't get to the butchers then I will buy my meat from Waitrose as opposed to any other supermarkets. They are more expensive - but like their ethics on the whole. But that is just my opinion :)

Will watch as this story unfolds with interest - it is how a company reacts to a situation like this that tells you how important ethics are as opposed to their bottom line.

I haven't watched the video because this sort of thing enrages me and makes me want to do the same to people who abuse animals

I am a vegetarian but I do buy free range, high welfare for my dog, You read reports like this and wonder if it is an isloated incident? The last free range turkey mince I brought for my dog for example, I hope that the turkey lived and died in a humane manner....

That's appalling.

I buy Gressingham Duck from Waitrose because of their high welfare standards.- I remember seeing a programme some time ago about ducks being raised for the table, and Waitrose were one of the few suppliers to insist that the ducks had more than adequate free access to water.

I have to say well done Waitrose for acting so promptly. They need to do more surprise visits themselves, I think.

I've seen similar footage in the past (RSPCA footage, nothing to do with Waitrose) so I didn't watch the film as I really don't want to see it again. It's good that Waitrose have suspended sales of this product, but given that this sort of thing has been brought to light before it's a shame that they (and presumably other retailers of this product too) weren't keeping a closer eye on things. I don't eat meat - thank goodness - but hubby does and I always buy the highest welfare I can, but even this doesn't seem to be straightforward...
