Waitrose Ducks. *warning distressing images*

Recommended Posts

Waitrose taking action is great but its only because its now in the public eye

If they were that interested in welfare this wouldnt happen in the first place

I can tell you without any shadow of a doubt that had they known they would have suspended them a long time ago.

Waitrose image as the caring supermarket is not something they would have jeopardized

Recently I joined the Humane Slaughter Association. I eat meat and I want a body to make sure slaughtering is done properly. Only ever buy British, always have.

"The Humane Slaughter Association is the only independent registered charity committed solely to the welfare of animals in markets, during transport and to the point of slaughter. In the 1920s it introduced the now almost universal mandatory use of stunning equipment at slaughter, replacing primitive methods."

Poor ducks. Where is the RSPCA? Sitting on their hands again.

I couldn't watch the footage I know it would upset me greatly  We sponsored a Donkey named Dennis at Hillside Sanctuary http://www.hillside.org.uk for years until he passed away (My OH is called Dennis) we now sponsor another Donkey :) Hillside do some fantastic work in exposing animal creulty and put presure on the relevant authorities to prosecute those responsible :clap: well done to them and shame on all those who treat defenceless animals so cruely

I think the point is that the supermarket SHOULD know all the time the conditions under which its food is sourced not rely on INSTANT action when caught out. I know I said earlier that this was not always possible but on reflection it should be and perhaps a thumping great fine for lying to the public is in order.

I should hope they are involved but I know what you mean.

I reported a starving sheep left alone in an empty waterlogged field( I mean really empty...NO grass No anything) with three dead companions and it was two weeks and six phone calls before anything was done. The only reason it survived is because I bought swedes and hay and blagged some silage from a nearby hobby farmer and fed it every day.

I haven't watched the video because this sort of thing enrages me and makes me want to do the same to people who abuse animals

I am a vegetarian but I do buy free range, high welfare for my dog, You read reports like this and wonder if it is an isloated incident? The last free range turkey mince I brought for my dog for example, I hope that the turkey lived and died in a humane manner....

Majuka - Sheepdrove do dog food 'Doggy Bags' , worth trying.

I always find it worrying that appointments are made for inspections of places like this - they should be unannounced. That wouldn't eradicate all problems, but would make them less likely.

I agree. Any supermarket that claims on it website that it

'encourages its suppliers to:...

* promote high standards of animal welfare'

should have measures in place to monitor the conditions. They should be pro-active, not reactive. There should be random checks. Obviously somebody suspected all was not well as they went along with a camera.

I don't want to watch the video, I don't even want to read the thread, I've read too much and I'm upset at the thought of a sheep, alone and hungry, with 3 dead companions already*

I just want to know if there is any duck that I can buy and be confident that it has been reared well. :(

but thank you WarrensWorld for raising this.

*I'm thinking that no-one would willingly do that and that the carer must have been incapacitated, and unable to call anyone....

Sadly as someone who has connections to Waitrose supply chain, I can tell you they are really not that caring ..Perhaps if they tried paying their suppliers a little more, instead of screwing them down to the last penny to maximise their own profits, this sort of thing wouldn't happen.......Just a thought

Although they have this unique selling strategy that seeks to put them above the rest it seems they are only in it for the profit after all....just like all the other supermarkets....surprise!!

There is obviously a huge PR exercise going on now to save face, but hopefully the positive of all this is that they will have to be far more proactive in the future to make sure they start living up to the claims they like to make...

Don't worry, redhotchick :) I fed her daily and she used to come up to the fence. She got through a vast amount of swede, hay and silage. She was OK.

Farmer's markets are a good source of free range duck which is where I get mine on the rare occasion we have it.

My elderly father had watched it and started to discuss it but I had to say "stop" I cant listen to it. He was very upset - he had animals as a boy and loves my cats, rabbit and hens when he comes down. He was almost in tears (he has had TIA's so easily upset due to vascular dementia) These people should be named and shamed

I have just seen this and is truely shocking. Those people should be prosecuted not just suspended what is there to think about?

I have bought free range duck from Waitrose in the past, it just goes to show that unless you are rearing your own animals, you have no idea what kind of life they have had. I do hope that this is a wake up call to Waitose that they need to to keep a much closer eye on their suppliers and if necessary pay them more so that they can employ good people with animal welfare at heart. I would pay more for my duck and I suspect that the actual difference would be pennies.

Regardless of what the supermarket do or pay their staff, it should be up to the producer to make sure their animals are treated well. The supermarkets aren't at fault in this case. The individuals that did this are. We seem to be forgetting that people have choices and those men chose to do this.
