Wasp attack

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this should go in "My Family and other animals" as it is mainly about Paddy but here goes...

This morning I was trying a new route with Paddy. We had negotiated a fairly poor path next to some sheep so I had him on the lead. We came up to a stile where it wasn't that easy for him to get through. I was encouraging him to go under the fence when he started scrabbling in the dirt. The next second, I turned round and he was literally covered with wasps and they were swarming all over. I dragged him away and tried to get them off him. He lay down whilst I was desperately picking them off him. They were burrowing into his fur and it was just awful.

I managed to get him a little further away but then he just lay down and wouldn't move at all. He started to retch and I thought that his throat was swelling. I was quite relieved when he vomited.

He went really still and wouldn't move so I had to carry him. He is about 23 kg so I didn't get very far. I phoned OH who was playing golf but really needed to get Paddy to the road.

Fortunately, a couple were cycling so I called to them and they helped me carry Paddy to the roadside. A car stopped a few minutes later and offered help and the wonderful couple there took us to the vet.

Anyway - he is there at the moment - having had a steroid injection and I will hopefully be picking him up later. They are keeping him in for observation.

I honestly thought that I had lost him so I now have everything crossed that he is ok.

Thanks everyone. I am so grateful to the wonderful people that hrlped!

I have just picked Padster up from the vets and he is a lot brighter - although still not his usual self. I don't think we will go that way again. I comtacted the County Council to report it but - as it is "pest" related - I have to tellvthe district council!!??

How frightening, but I think he must have rolled in a nest or something, this sort of attack is fairly rare. Thank goodness there were people available to help - glad to hear he's feeling better.

I'll leave this here because it's about the wasp attack rather than about the dog. Hope you didn't get stung.

Blimey Jane, poor Paddy! He's a lovely boy too. He's probably a bit sore after all those stings and likely still shocked. Should have come with us!!! Although we did come across a swarm of wasps in the hedgerow, luckily not near us.

What lovely rescuers though. Hope he's better soon. Hope you didn't get stung either - that was very brave of you to pull them off him like that.

Sorry to hear about Paddy! How frightening. I'd never expect an animal to get attacked like that. I thought wasps only tended to go for strong smells, like perfume? I heard something recently about some people walking through a woods, several different groups, who were attacked by a swarm of wasps, but I can't remember where it was. All I can find is about the pensioner in Chelmsford and her husband who were attached. Hope he feels better soon. Do you need to carry an epi pen everywhere now (do they do these things for dogs?)?

I think Olly is right and that he must have disturbed a nest that was under the stile. The wasps were quite small and very yellow.

I only got about three stings. I've no idea how I escaped so lightly. I was using my shirt to get them off and didn't really notice the stings until I'd calmed down.

I was really lucky to have such wonderful people stop and help - I am so grateful to them.

Paddy is still a bit dopey but is drugged up with antihistamine so it's not too surprising. Off to bed now - what a day!!

Oh no poor you and poor Paddy! Mr Griffin was attacked by wasps a few weeks ago while he was out with our dogs. They ignored the dogs though, they were swarming around his head and he got stung a number of times. He was very sore afterwards.

Glad to hear that people stopped to help you. Similar happened to me a few years ago. I'd had an argument with Mr Griffin and stormed off in a huff with Lizzie our Springer. Walking around our favourite nature reserve she trod on a barbed fish hook which got stuck between her toes. The fish hook belonged to a man and his son fishing yards away and they were so apologetic. They carried her to their car & they insisted on driving me & poor old Lizzie to the emergency vets and paid the bill too!

Poor Paddy and you - what a shock.

My last lurcher always used to snap at wasps and was often stung; I have a doggy first aid kit in the car (as well as a human one) and I have some Piriton syrup in it in case of stings.

Grr to those fishing hooks Griffin; we often walk around the local reservoir and I'm always on the look-out for them. How decent though that they helped and weer so generous :D
