Loudest alarm clock available?

Recommended Posts

I've always been wary of really loud alarm clocks; my brother in law is an angler & he says that the alarms to wake people up when a fish is hooked (I don't understand the terms!) can sometimes cause heart attacks :( I used to have a lovely proper one with the bells on top that went DING! DING! DING!, but the fright they gave me was huge...

A lot of good replies (the cockerel is a bit extreme Plum ). I will run them past him. The problem seems to be that he is in such a deep sleep that sometimes he even misinterprets noises. One time the alarm went off and in a semi conscious state he thought it was the smoke detector and 'woke up' to find himself standing on a chair trying to dismantle the smoke alarm with a screwdriver  Our smoke alarm does not work by battery but wired up to the others in the house so very dangerous :shock: I can go in to wake him (well he appears awake) and have the most bizarre conversation which he has no recollection of when properly awake.

My DS has the same trouble even when he wants to wake up, he missed a few rugby games in the recent world cup. I have to turn his light on and talk to him, and like you have said you have to make sure that what is being said back to you is coherant, because he can have a conversation with me one minute and be asleep the next. He is 15 and has a Lumie alarm clock but the light doesn't seem to help much.

ANH - I have to confess the water method has been tried and it was at YS's request. He did get up reluctantly but everything was a bit damp! Probably due to the fact I didn't have a plant sprayer and had to use a cup  .....perhaps I should invest in a sprayer!

He likes the idea of the vibrating clock under the pillow and the sweet tin idea is one to try. He has tried using his mobile turned up loud but that didn't work. He tries to set 3 alarms now  He also isn't woken by the house phone which he has in his room. My poor MIL found this out when trying to ensure he got up to go to school one morning when we had had to leave very early. She rang for 30 mins before he heard it. He was upset when he found out that she had been trying to get him for so long.

It is a relief to hear that others have similar problems.

It does worry me a bit that YS won't be able to get himself up when he leaves home for Uni next year :? . Having said that, ES was a bit like that too but seems to be managing fine away from home.

I think psychologically, if they know there is someone in the house who will always make sure they're get up when they have to, they switch off their own "getting up" mechanism. That's one theory anyway  .

Same here. We have decided that initially he will need to travel. If I can't wake him by shouting etc I don't think he will hear others. He was not woken by his siblings when they were at home :(

I use an old fashioned digital clock radio and have always set it for 20 mins before I want to get up so by the time it gets through to me I wake up gently. It can be set to radio or has a loud beep and has a snooze button too. I always used to use a second back up battery alarm before children but now I don't need the second alarm

My son is just the same and nothing we've tried over the years has worked - he's in his 30s now. He doesn't live with me anymore and if I have to phone him he turns the phone off thinking it's the snooze button on his alarm! We've tried the loud alarms, loud and in a tin, loud, in a tin and the other side of the room......Lumie, Shaky thing under the pillow......opening all the curtains, removing bedclothes.....

You can go in and wake him and have a full conversation which he will not recall later, you can make him sit up and put his feet on the floor........he'll go back to sleep!

Apparently, there's some sort of alarm you can fix to your big toe......he's going to try that next!

I normally get woken up by them but have to set 4 alarms to get me up 'cos I just snooze them ... managed to miss a test last year 'cos I slept through it :anxious:

Its normally when I've stayed up late (4/5am) and so not had enough sleep ... don't sleep much anyway though!

Power naps in the afternoon get me through Uni

Get a Devon Rex, they're meant to be hypoallergenic ;)

I will admit to over the years having used all sorts of devices and clocks to get everyone up :lol: The best has to be the Teas maid .The sound of the water getting hot and boiling ( Before the actual alarm wakes you up) long before you have to be up worked every time.

I lost it a few times when OH came home on leave and i struggled to get up for an early shift, the last time i found it after he had hidden it , it was on top of the wardrobe right at the back , since giving up work it sits on the bedside table waiting for me to wake and press the make button ....no alarm. :D but a cup of tea in bed ....nice.
