The Olympics - the sport

Recommended Posts

From now on I am going to forget all the rubbish politics and stress and enjoy the sporting event for what it is. I'm quite excited about some of the sports, some I shall ignore and some I will never grasp the rules of - like the maddison.

I'm hoping I'm not alone and that we can post links to exciting moments etc because it's difficult to catch everything, although I will do my best.

I love the rowing, the canoe and kayaking, the BMX cross ( I think that's what it's called) the swimming, some of the horsey stuff and of course the track and field. Those are my favourites although I will follow more than just those.

Good luck to teamGB of course.

I am looking forward to watching some of the sport too. I particularly like the gym stuff and am in awe of what people can do with their bodies. I will watch some track, long jump, swimming. Not really into the horsey bit, but YD is so may see some of it anyway

I'm planning to watch the walking  A distant cousin used to be part of the GB olympics team so we always watched it to see if we could see him when we were kids. 8)

Used to love watching gymnastics when I was younger will try and watch, also planning to watch some of the track events, the rowing and equestrian. I'll be cheering on Oscar Pistorius, there was a lovely interview with him in the FT magazine the other w/e and he comes across as someone who just gets on with whatever is thrown his way without any self pity.

I am looking forward to the archery, as we know the GB archers. DS did the acreditation process to shoot but did not make the team this time, he has always aimed for 2016 so hopefully he will make it then.

Good luck to all our athletes. I too hope people will enjoy it for the sport and forget the politics.

Well, we saw the Torch go past on Sunday at a little Olympic/Wedding Anniversary party we went to and it was surprisingly exciting. I actually got goosebumps. My DD and her cousins even managed to have some photos taken with the torch in Danson Park afterwards.

We have tickets to see the mens K1 slalom final - so excited to see this. We were at the GB selection trials at Lee Valley earlier in the year. We are taking YS and his canoe polo team mate/school friend. They both do K1, C1 and C2 slalom together so hopefully they'll really enjoy it too.

After watching Bradley Wiggins and Frome come in 1st and 2nd in the Tour de France I hope we are set for a great summer of sport (words I never thought would come out of my mouth):lol:

Good luck to all GB teams

I found this link to the BMX races that superkitty is going to, if you haven't seen it, check it out. It is thrilling, skilful and dangerous.

BMXracing

My ES has done boarder cross which is a great spectator sport too and it sounds a bit like roller ball.

Thanks! Never seen it before, but I plan to do a lot of shouting and hollering and generally being over-excited :D

I'm really really looking forward to the three day eventing, diving, gymnastics and obviously then all of the track & field events. Mr Griffin used to be the under 16 UK champion at Taekwondo but he takes no pleasure at all in watching it as an Olympic event because he is very critical and doesn't think they're good enough

We've both even booked two weeks off work

I'm looking forward to it all. For Friday night and the opening ceremony I am getting a takeaway and a bottle of wine. Then as the Road Cycling goes past us, this weekend we will be watching that and cheering them on as they zoom past!

Then we'll take each day as it comes - enjoying whatever is on! (Except the football, for some reason in my head that isn't an Olympic sport :anxious: )

And might go up to see the Marathon - depends on weather...

We're off to the first event today! Ladies football in the Millennium Stadium, two matches back to back, the first match is Team GB. Not sure if we'll stay for the whole of the 2nd match as its hubby's birthday & we're hoping to go for a curry on the way home.

Cardiff town centre is looking fab in the pics I've seen, the sunshine certainly helps. There's also lots of entertainment happening, should be fun :D

We had a great time. Really nice atmosphere in town, all the police officers were happy & smiley. Everyone seemed to be having fun.

We went into the stadium about an hour before KO, security checks were quite rigorous. They made a mistake by not having enough female security on our gate for body searches. There was about 6 males & 2 females, needless to say there were queues for the women, while some of the men were stood doing nothing. Hubby complained that his security guy was a bit over enthusiastic - he had to erm 'rearrange' himself afterwards. We even had to show the bottom of our shoes. All pocket contents had to be put in a clear plastic bag too. The queues for people going in with rucksacks/large bags was even longer, they had to have the bag searched then placed in a clear bag & sealed until they got through the turnstiles.

It was a good match, I think I preferred it to men's footie, it seemed faster & when they got knocked down they just got up again & carried on - no moaning! We were sat up in the top tier & there was lots of families, including young babies.

Glad we went, we go again on the 10th August for the Men's Bronze Medal match. Hubby is taking ES on the 4th for the Mens Quarter Final match.

Think I'm all set. Ive got olympics apps set on my mobile and tablet with alarms for my favourite sports, iplayer to fall back on when I miss an event. Freebie timetables are good to go. Hoping the supermarkets will do lots of Olympic mealdeals so that I don't have to waste too much time in the kitchen. MS is on standby to be Olympic chef for me although I'll have to share him with the army. I have complete faith in the security now that our police and army are in charge, so ready to sit back and enjoy.

:D Have set parts to record - as boys surfing at the moment.

I will be watching the gymnastics - as I have contact with Jenni Pinches. And also the aqautic events, but hope all runs smoothly for everyone - for the families of competitors it must be such a proud moment 8)

Security wise - sad that armed forces have been called in, but also glad it is not being run by "muppet-force"

Go team GB - do us proud

My DD is performing in the Paralympic opening ceremony. She got to watch the technical rehearsal of the main olympic opening the other night, you don't get to see it all but she said it was amazing!! :D

No idea who is lighting the flame. I'm looking forward to watching it though.

It's all just starting for the opening ceremony, I'm looking forward to this.

I'm going to the Olympic Park next wednesday with son and his partner to watch handball. Can't wait to sample the excitement and atmosphere. Must find out what handball is :D
