Christmas cake - when is everyone starting?

Recommended Posts

Mid to late October for me.

And I ALWAYS do the Delia Smith one - you can get it in kit for at Waitrose, but I have all the stuff I need already usually.

Half term break I make Christmas cake and puddings. Also a Delia fan for Christmas cake, often make her traditional one and a Creole one, not sure this year I hadn't thought about it until now :D

I make it in October 1/2 term too.

I make an old M & S recipe from an ancient cookbook of theirs.

I adapt it slightly adding dates, apricots and fresh lemon and orange zest, instead of that dried peel.

I also cook all the dried fruit with brandy and the juice from the orange and lemon, and then leave it overnight.

It smells fab the next morning.

I did want to make it sooner this year though, while my girls are still giving me some eggs.

My old recipe is great - but alcoholic.

Need an Alcohol free one this year - anyone got any suggestions for a good recipe? Preferably wih no nuts either...

I've already bought a Christmas Pudding - the Heston orange one from Waitrose. Early I know, but they are in stock AND reduced!

The cake and the pudding were made on the weekend. Now just being fed brandy every so often. Finished shopping for the boys Christmas presents and most of other children...so almost done :dance::dance::dance::dance:

Wow you are organised.

I bought the ingredients for the cake, pudding and mincemeat today. Just need to make them now.

Think I should retitle this 'All things horrid' . For the first time in years I decided to make a Christmas cake, now I remember why I stopped making them; I used Delias recipe but even tho' I wrapped the tin, the outside of the cake is rock hard and the bottom is even worse - and possibly burnt.

Will it soften up during storage? And will feeding it loads of brandy help?

And if OH says one more time "why didn't you just buy one", I'm going to put it in the dustbin!

:cry::cry::cry:
