mimi5
So been having a few worries with my pekins As some of you will remember I losy my Monty to Marek's in dec But decided as I missed having a boy so miuch and needed help with all the girls I'd get another! Well, I got given a lavender boy who was nearly a year old and called him Morris. He was in the classic with my 2 "accidental" babies Tilly and Polly. Intros seemed to be going well and the 2 groups had been FR together....then Tilly who had had a few sneezes and her sister developed bubbly eyes UH OH...myco, so the vet put the 3 of them on baytril for 7 days (even though Morris had no symptoms) They finished baytril tue but Morris seemed to have an upset tummy. Today he had died in the night I discovered when I let them out In the meantime, in the cube big girls had been switching over from growers to layers pellets (I thought I had done it gradually over several weeks...) but all seemed to be laying well but getting thinner Especially my 3 hatchlings from last summer I had wormed them... so off to the vet nearly 2 weeks ago. They all got weighed and a poo sample sent off (charged me £26 and I still don't have the results yet ) Told to put them back on a grower/layer pellet mix, give them anything else they will eat and encourage FR. Due back with them on tue next week for another weigh in. So to my horror Milly was dead in the coop too this morning!!! She had been broody earlier this week and had a spell in the anti-broody coop. I am SO upset today and so have decided not to add anymore to my flock. I have no idea what is going on and have the horrible "jinxed" chicken keeper feelings of last year all over again. I have invested a lot of time energy and money in to my chicken keeping and have learned loads, but I think maybe it's not going to be for me as I can't bear it when they die!! Molly is now my only original and isn't quite 2 yet Also i still have to joy of intros from scratch again with Tilly and Polly Very sad...sorry to off load but don't really have any chickeny people to talk to here Although even hubby was shocked to lose 2 in one night and did give me a hug. jeshen
Oh, Mimi, so sorry to hear you've lost 2 of your chooks. What an awful shock for you. They've all had a lovely life with you and you've done a lot more than many would to try and sort them out. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason and they are fragile little things. Thinking of you lots xx
mollyripkim
I am so sorry you have lost your little ones so soon, what an awful thing to happen, really feel for you. As others have said you have worked so hard for them and done everything you can, I guess you have just been really unlucky but that doesn't help much I know. good_egg
what a horrible thing to happen. Could you get a PM done to get answers? Hugs
coco
So very sorry. I know exactly how disheartening it is when things go wrong. I lost nine hens between august and the end of december last year. It was to a mystery respiratatory disease that had come in with some new hens I bought (they all died] After a pm it turned out to be myco despite all hens having had antibiotics for it and showing no obvious symptoms. At one point I was losing a chicken a week. Things will get better, I have had four new girls for three months now and touchwood they and everybody else are all fine. If possible I would get a pm done as the one I had done showed some things I wouldn't have thought of. thinking of you and sending you hugs. Minnie&Moose
Very sorry - what a sad and horrible day for you. It's hard when something like this happens - we had a couple of unexplained deaths last year. We never knew why but the rest of them have been fine since, including one that came in with the 2 that died.
Mrs_B
Oh, Mimi, I am so so sorry to read about what's happened - that's just awful for you I really hope you can find out what's happened so you can be confident about your other chickens' health. I'm so gutted for you Huge hugs x

mimi5
Thanks everyone for your kind words and hugs. I spoke with the vet today who seemed to think that the deaths were unrelated and I guess I also think that, just unfortunate timing Good news the poo sample came back clear, but it was only for one hen, Florence who kicked off my concerns with a mucky bottom weeks back now. So checking crops every night will be the order of the day. Tilly's was nearly empty but her sister was back to bullying her without Morris there today Nutridrops and some TLC and she ate some food before I put her back in the classic. Back to the vet on tue for a weigh in with the big girls I have had Morris and Milly cremated. I thought about PM's but seriously I'm running up a sizable bill and I just didn't know what to do for the best. I did get 4 eggs today

missusmac
Mimi5, I have only been a member of this forum since Oct 2012 but you have been one of the regular contributors who has inspired me to believe I can do this too. I am very sorry for your losses but want you to know that, even if you decide to stop chicken keeping, you have influenced others in a positive way about looking after this aspect of our livestock/pets. Thinking of you ......
