Alem
I was just wondering what material people are using in the egg laying quarters of the cube, if anything at all. Our chicks are coming up 10 weeks old, so it will be a little while yet before they start laying. Thank you for any advic
Cat tails
Welcome to the forum! I use woodchips in my Go Up nesting box. Works fine and is easy to clean.
mullethunter
I use Easichick
Chickabee
Easibed, it's the same as easichick but in a buggier bag. If I didn't have that I'd use white woodchip
Luvachicken
I use Aubiose
kopperdrake
Bliss bedding - the eucalyptus variety if we can get it!
chooksRCute
Miscanthus which is nice & soft or Aubriose, £8 & £12 X 20kg bags respectively from local suppliers. Lasts ages & composts lovely
kopperdrake
Ooh, you're close to us - how big a bag does the Miscanthis come in, and where from?
chooksRCute
Ooh, you're close to us - how big a bag does the Miscanthis come in, and where from? 20kg bags, one bag does my 3m x 3m run. I get mine from Sunnyside poultry at Burton £8, although Kennelgate pet supplies & most Horsey places do the Aubriose, same size but £
The Dogmother
Aubiose in the run, droppings trays and nest box here
sweetpea08
I use pine bedding for small animals with some herbs thrown in like sage, rosemary, balm of Gilead. I out newspaper in the bottom to stop the madams from pulling it out from underneath
Blackrocksrock
Must be a real meanie here, I just use shredded paper after lining it with newspaper to keep it together!
The Dogmother
Ummm... best to avoid any form of paper; it will attract damp, and mites love it. Also, some chooks like to eat shredded paper Sorry
Blackrocksrock
Have used it for all the years have had my chooks without problems so far maybe been lucky, no mites and very healthy chickens thus far. Composts really well but have the short shreddings as long gets tangled in legs.
panicum
Hi! I'm new to this forum and in looking up auboise to see what it was, I came across this post on another forum. Wondered if anyone has had any issues with impacted crops with this bedding? Sounds like scary stuff to me. My chicks are only 5 weeks old so I have several months to check out bedding for the nests. http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=100176.0 panicum
The Dogmother
Welcome Lots of us have been using it for many years without problems. Personally, i have never seen a bird eating it; i would assume that is a one off.
Cat tails
Didn't Luvachicken have issues with her chickens eating the bedding in her nesting box?
The Dogmother
Can't remember. I have seen birds eating straw, hay and shredded paper, but never hemp bedding.
Cat tails
Mine ate wood shavings and dried tabacco stems...
Luvachicken
Didn't Luvachicken have issues with her chickens eating the bedding in her nesting box? You are right Cat tails I did except it wasn't in the nest box. I bought Dengie Fresh Bed which mine had in like a sand pit for digging in. It was like chopped straw and smelt beautiful and supposedly kept flies away. Unfortunately 2 of my girls ate it and both ended up with impacted crops which needed operations. I think I have dippy chickens and was just unlucky. I've stuck with the aubiose ever since.
