AndyRoo
The easiest way to make jaffa cake is to use a sweet pastry case, put apricot jam over the bottom - quite thickly - cover with a little bit of sponge mix, bake and then cover it in chocolate Loved your cake AndyRoo, very, very shiny I'm basically making up my own jaffa cake recipe! I'm going to do the bases as mini genoise cakes in cupcake tins. For the jelly bit I am going to make up some thick orange jelly and add some extra marmalade. Then I am going to make a 50/50 dark and milk chocolate sauce with a bit of butter to make it shiny. The trick to getting a shiny chocolate sauce is to always add a little bit of unsalted butter, it gives it a very glossy sheen. You just have to be careful not to use too much, otherwise it won't set. Also, if you're using a chocolate sauce on a cake over buttercream: do the crumb coat, and leave in the fridge to set. Then do the final buttercream layer, and put back in the fridge to set. Leave your chocolate sauce until it is cool (but still 'liquid') and then spoon on top and spread with an angled palette knife - it's easier that way as you don't end up getting your fingers in the sauce! soapdragon
I felt so sorry for those bakers who's gingerbread collapsed at the last minute.....all that hard work! Should Val have gone? Not sure but personalities are now beginning to come out and that's really interesting! I quietly have my money on Andrew to win....he is consistently good and has a very organised approach - loved his ticklist for the components of his gingerbread!!! Anyone else care to speculate at this stage
Plum
Well it wont be Val. It amazes me how the bakes end up so presentable, mostly. They must be given extra time after the times up?

AndyRoo
So next year applying for GBBO Andy? Let us know so we can cheer you on. Haha! Well, you never know. Maybe that can be next year's project - this year I just want to get my damned books published! We were watching last night and my OH & I agreed the BBC does not have a bleep machine strong enough for me to make it through a gingerbread task. There's a very real danger that someone would die at my hands as I bludgeoned them with a gingerbread house!! My friends and former colleagues have been trying to make me apply for the last 3 years. Apparently they love everything I cook, but I never know if that's just a 'friend' thing. I think I'm a pretty good cook (if I say so myself), but my presentation leaves a lot to be desired. Ditto with baking. Maybe I just need to go through every single recipe in all of Paul's and Mary's books to make sure I know what the hell I am on about!! Alis girls
I am not sure. Val is very eccentric don't think she will make it to end. I can't decide who will win. Mind you last yrs Nadiyah was a surprise. Loved the chicken running through her kitchen last night on her programme. BTW has anyone on Omlet been on come dine with me or any other shows. Several chicken owners turn up and always wondered.
AndyRoo
I've never been on a show like that - but I have ended up on Casualty more than once. I used to live in Bristol and they used to film there a bit (no idea if that's still the case) and it all happened by accident. One time I was leaving work and this woman came running up to me and asked me if I wouldn't mind being filmed for Casulaty - before I could respond, she grabbed my arm and dragged me into a shop where they were filming a scene. I am pretty sure you got to see the back of my head for about 30 seconds! hehe The second occasion, they were filming a crash just down the road from where I lived. I had no idea what was going on, I didn't notice the cameras, but I could see an ambulance crew and a few police (who I assume were the actors) - and so I merrily carried on walking right past them. Seconds later some guy with a clipboard started screaming at me from across the street and signalling for me to move out the way. I thought it was because they were getting a second ambulance to assist with the crash, so I quickly hurried to the other side of the road where I turned round to see what was going on. I am trained in CPR and first response, so I wondered if they might need help... Then 'screaming clipboard man' came out and started shouting again. At that point I just looked at him like he was touched in the head wondering why he was doing nothing to help the situation. And I didn't move, just looked at him with a mix of confusion and slight annoyance. After a minute of him shouting and me not moving, he looked exasperated and then walked off. They didn't stop doing what they were doing, but they seemed to have it under control so I just gave it a minute until they had freed said actors, and then relieved, I turned and walked off. So I assume about 12 years ago, somewhere out there, there is an episode of a twenty something me, in shot, looking really confused! Also, when I was about 19 I auditioned for a 'reality' show aimed at teens called Cruel Winter. A friend and I went together, and had a few drinkies first, so I was a little merry. Also, I wasn't diagnosed at the time, but it turns out I was a little bit manic... I laugh about it now, but for an entire month prior to the show they aired my audition tape 2-3 times a week, even though I didn't make it on to the show. It wouldn't have been so bad - but I started getting recognised as "the crazy guy" from the adverts. I even had friends text me asking if I was okay, because my behaviour on the audition tape was a bit bizarre. D'oh! All of that considered, maybe I shouldn't apply for Bake Off! soapdragon
Have just caught up with this week's episode and An Extra Slice. It seemed as though no one really stood out with the three breads. Surprised that Michael went home! Val did well too tho her ark was ...interesting! I am still trying to puzzle out who will be the final three; at the mo my guess would be Tom, Andrew and Kate but don't quote me on that! Am looking forward to batter week.....apparently Yorkshire puds feature highly and they are near impossible to get uniform if you have to make the mini ones

soapdragon
Apparently there is one week based on historical baking too....I wonder if Paul and Mary will dress up and if so, in what?

soapdragon
Apparently Mel and Sue have opted out....what about Mary and Paul? Channel 4 may end up with no Bake Off at all!! Shades of Top Gear

sjp
I think it'll be one out of the 4 current set of presenters with at least one of C4's main food presenters with the pig farmer as the outside favorite to get the job like to know who the un-named bidder that got turned down was through
soapdragon
TBH if its not the same presenters then the prog won't be the same either...for me its as much about the mix of presenters as contestants; after all they are the constants each series. Although I love it on the BEEB I don't think I'll watch on Channel 4 - sigh.
bluekarin
I am so disappointed, not at the beeb, but at Love Productions for being so very very greedy. The bbc offer was double what they have paid in previous series and still £10 MILLION under C4's offer I am not sure if I will watch it on C4; maybe one episode to see what its like. But I guess there will be no more Sports Relief Bake Offs which is a shame as they were really fun.
Olly
Hear, hear. It's interesting as presumably Channel 4 have bid for the format of the programme, but Love Production didn't have the presenters already contracted to appear in the next series. Perhaps they thought that the lure of additional money would guarantee that they would follow. Big cheer to Mel and Sue for turning it down, I really hope Mary and Paul do the same. Groovychook
I am so disappointed, not at the beeb, but at Love Productions for being so very very greedy. Same here. I'm sure they would have made enough money out of the new offer from the BBC Hear, hear. Yes, well done Mel & Sue. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mary & Paul refuse to move too. Heard rumours this morning that Jamie Oliver is very interested. Groan... not a good fit in my book. The format was perfect as it was and I think it would be a pale imitation with a new team.
soapdragon
It seems that Love Productions attitude is that'it doesn't matter who presents it; its the format' based on the fact that they have sold the format round the world'. I beg to differ; we know Mel, Sue, Mary and Paul as THE Bake Off and it just won't be the same without. If Jamie Oliver get in then I will def not watch - what does he know about baking (lots about cooking in general but you need specialists for GBBO and MB and PH are the perfect pairing!) Greed is a terrible thing.

I think the 'talent' are the choice of the broadcaster not the production company the production company allegedly had a higher offer from an un-named broadcaster which they turned down because they want the show kept on terrestrial TV and by all accounts it wasn't SKY 70% owners of said production company I think who ever ends up as the sponsor ( I suspect one of the Supermarkets might want in as they should be a lot of merchandising spin off to be had) of the program is going to want a say in who the 'talent' is the choice of judges is limited if they want a pure baker that's a known 'face' I can only think of 3 Female ones 2 if MB or the one from the Jnr show aren't used ones an actress the other is the one ITV used for a couple of seasons of their bakery of the year show the male judge could end up been a chef. I think Jo brand could be in the mix as presenter

soapdragon
Ummm.....changing my final three to: Jane, Andrew and Benjamina if that's OK with you!!!!! A degree of poignancy as this will obviously be the last 'proper' GBBO before channel 4 ruin the whole thing.
