CatieB
My view is that once dinner is finished the clearing up should be done. My hubby isn't of that view and says my view isn't normal. He takes the dishes and leaves them on the kitchen side until he wants to clear up at some point later. We have a dishwasher so I think it only takes a couple of minutes to tidy and it's then done. Who does what? Anyone share my view or am I unique as he insisted.
Daphne
Well yes, I would clear the table once dinner is finished and load the dishwasher, rinsing off excess stuff as you go. But, I do leave any actual washing up (pots and pans type stuff) till the morning after which I know infuriates some people (my mother for instance). Personally I get very disgruntled when people clear the table the instant I have finished eating, I like to linger, and chat. So, I can see this is a bit of a minefield! soapdragon
We clear away as soon as supper is over. The only exception is when the dishwasher is already running!
Cat tails
I live alone and don't have a dishwasher... and washing the dishes is far from my favorite activity... So the clearing up and washing the dishes can linger around for some time. Some days I run out of knives or tea mugs... Turns out you can also butter your sandwiches with a peeling knife... Groovychook
Turns out you can also butter your sandwiches with a peeling knife... Washing up is my OH's job. He stacks the dirty dishes after we've eaten but refuses to wash them up until just before bedtime. He used to try and leave them until the next morning but I put a stop to that He's a work in progress
patsylabrador
We like to get cleared up straight away, just habit I think. It's going to have to be done so I prefer to get it out of the way. It's nicer afterwards. Also I like to sort of stretch out and clearing up does that I think. Luckily for me OH is even more determined to clear up after a meal than me so if I'm feeling lazy I can be lazy and it will still get done. AndyRoo
If I am on my own I clear up right away. If we're eating together then the OH tends to take it out and leaves it on the side for *me* to clear up at a later date. If I left the OH alone too long I am pretty sure our crockery would grow fur and evolve legs, so I tend to tell him off the following day if it hasn't made its way to the dishwasher by then... but generally I get so grossed out that I put it in the dishwasher myself before we fall out! Blackrocksrock
Clear up as I cook and clear up as soon as we have finished eating and load dishwasher and put on as soon as then it can get emptied at bedtime. If I sit down thats me sat down for the evening!

I do start to feel quite bad though with all you organised and tidy people
mullethunter
I used to leave it till the next morning. But since living with OH whoever isn't cooking washes up as we go along so that after eating there are only plates and maybe carving tray. If OH cooked and I'm washing up I do it straight away, if I cooked and OH is washing he usually does it an hour or two later. Always the same evening though, and now I would hate to come down to last nights dirty dishes in the morning.
Grandmashazzie
I'm with you Blackrocksrock. I find if I don't keep going after eating, and wash and dry dishes. I find it really hard to get up after I've sat down and then I would leave them until morning and I hate getting up to a messy kitchen. Also I have a dishwasher which I never use and there is 7 of us! I detest packing and unpacking a dishwasher.
Luvachicken
We have a rule that if I've cooked then hubby has to wash up and this is done soon after finishing eating. DS is always very helpful and often wipes up even after being at work in London all day. My biggest gripe is that hubby DOESN'T put the fairy liquid away OR empty the washing up bowl when he has finished. I will not empty that bowl and it is often left until the following morning when the water looks really disgusting.

If I sit down thats me sat down for the evening! I agree, anything I cook with gets cleaned up as I go along and no longer need it. If the OH cooks it all just gets left wherever it happened to be when he is serving up meaning that there is a healthy supply of mess usually... Which makes me want to pull his toes off! chickencam
We tend to tidy up as we go then table is cleared by a child or 3 depending who is around, usually washing up and loading the dishwasher is done by one and table clearing and mat wiping by another. If it is just OH and myself we do the job together but if anything is left around by bedtime I have a clear up and wipe around I can't stand starting another day with the mess of the previous one! The Dogmother
loving this! I am not a tidy freak by any means, but my kitchen is small, so I wash up as I go along when cooking. I have only recently got a dishwasher and still don't much care for it, but it is useful when you have people round and lots of washing up. I cook from scratch, so there tend to be plenty of bowls and pots, if anyone's around then the rule is that 'them as doesn't cook does the cleaning'. OH is an exceptional cook, but admits that he is very messy, so when i go round to his place, I end up doing the washing up and filling his dishwasher before I can get started on anything else. Don't even get me started on the number of mugs and glasses which accrue beside his bed In answer to the first question, I do tidy away after a meal, but if friends are round and we're chatting, then I leave it a while until we move away from the table.
