I seem to have read a real run of worthy, yet depressing books, and with the economic situation, I'd really like to be reading something which cheers me up!

 

I like a bit of chick lit for light relief and have read all of the marian Keyes books although non chick lit books are equally well recieved!

 

Any suggestions?

Anything by Deric Longden. Even the sad books have some amazing humour in them. The one with his mother particularly so. But any of his cat books are lighthearted, well written and will make you laugh.

I probably would not have read any of her books but she is a friend so I had to (well you would wouldn't you).

Every series that Alexander McCall Smith has written aren't funny

exactly but they are lovely to read and nothing nasty ever happens

 

All Bill Bryson's books make me laugh, especially his latest one

Gervase Phinn is very funny, I love his books about a school inspector 'oop north', I'm rereading them for the millionth time at the mo- very funny

Agree with both Tony Hawks and Bill Bryson. Once nearly snorted all sorts out of my nose in public whilst reading "notes from a small island." Most embarrassing

Not particularly comical, but a darned interesting is Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. A gripping read about their pursuit of self-sufficiency, with some really funny situations.

I like Chloe by Freya North. She has written lots of books so if you like that one there are lots more to try.

I love "PS I love you" by Cecelia Aherne, I read it more than once and will get round to watching the DVD at some stage

I'm sure I've read a few Jane Green books but nothing springs to mind.

I liked Patricia Scanlan's City Girl, it's a long time since I read it though.

They are all chick lit types.

I really like Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The first 30 odd pages are hard going, and it's not a barrel of laughs (sorry) But it is very good.

The Chinese Dictionary for Lovers made me laugh.

 

If I want a laugh I prefer a Romantic Comedy on DVD to a book.

David Sedaris! Me Talk Pretty One Day, Naked, and When You are Engulfed in Flames are all hilarious. You can find a lot of his stuff in audio online, too.

Terry Pratchett always works for me - my favourite is Guards, Guards. If you don't fancy the Dicworld series, he co-wrote Good Omens with Neil Gaiman, which is a spoof of The Omen film - much funnier than it sounds.

The Unadulterated Cat is very funny (specially if you've got cats yourself).

 

Also the Discworld series, specially the ones with the Nanny Ogg, Granny Weatherwax and Magrat in them: Witches Abroad, The Wyrd Systers...

 

Those make me laugh. In a non-humour but also entertaining I like Joanne Harris, the author of Chocolat. Very atmospheric books, usually based in France or with a French connection (not the shop!).

I like Terry Pratchett. I have been reading a lot of crime novels, it's nice as you know they will always solve it in the end.

 

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Travels with my chickens or Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance Very short, but amusing as about chickens.

Maeve Binchy - easy to read books about real people with real lives, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and always beautifully written

 

For something funny, I know this is a kids book (age 10ish) but I once bought Son a Jiggy McCue book (that's the character in the book - I think the author is Michael Lawrence) and read it on the bus home from Canterbury. I cried with laughter all the way home. Got the strangest of looks from the other passengers.

If you want chicklit, then jill mansell is quite good. Also I love the bridget jones books and also her other less well know book called cause celeb. Very good

If you've read all Marian Keyes (sp) I have too they're brill, then I agree with ANY of Jill Mansell ones too they are laugh out loud.

 

I think you would like any books by Sophie Kinsella more though! So funny.

 

She did a whole range called 'Shopaholic' 'Shopaholic & Baby' Shopaholic ties the knot' you get the idea!

 

I think I must identify with Sophie's main character!

Toast by Nigel Slater is good-it's basically a journey of his life through food, it's sweet, sad and quite funny.

 

If you're one for Jeremy Clarkson then his books are funny-am reading one of them at the minute.

 

For light reading how about the Agatha Raisin series by M C Beaton, they're quite humourous, despite being murder mysteries!

Ollie is a great book, its about a non doggy person adopting a dog. True story, very touching yet funny. Sorry cannot remember the authors name.
