GreenGirl
... to my new colleagues about the whole chicken/Omlet phenomenon and the forum. I was obviously getting quite enthusiastic as I noticed the reactions of “Riiight”, eyebrows being raised, and people sidling away … Anyhow, I thought I would say thankyou to all for becoming a surprisingly large and pleasant part of my life – I obviously wasn’t as passionate about this BC (before chooks), what on earth did I do?! (I am sure they will be more receptive when the eggs starting coming into the office )
clootie
How funny - I'd have given them a week minimum before I started recruiting You are a true Omleteer GG !!
Egluntyne
They will.....in fact they will be queueing up to be your new best friends and asking about "the girls".
Cinnamon
Its a funny thing to try & explain, isn't it? Someone asked me the other week about my forum buddies & how we all met & I honestly forgot about the Omlet & chickens connection, saying we were all just likeminded people, who believe in cleaner, greener living. It wasn't until afterwards that I thought d'oh, & we all have the same hen house
cordelia
have to agree.....people without chickens....just dont understand... my brothers' eyes glossed over as I tried to tell him about my chickens recent antics the other day.....of course I do give him exciting updates whenever I see him... (plus he'd really like some, but his wife says no....goodness I hope they dont ever read this !! )
Chook n Boo Mum
I'm glad I'm not the only one!!! I have waxed lyrical to the chap who came to cut our hedge, who is interested in getting chooks (well his wife is) By the time I drew breath, he said "you've read up on this then?" He's now looking into getting Mrs chooks for Christmas! I did push the point about the Eglu being easy to clean (with a demo of course!), less likely to get redmite as no dark corners & little wood, warm in winter etc etc etc....wonder if he just said that to shut me up My friends are all mildly amused whenever I start up about the girls (dogs) and the chooks. One even told me the other day on the school run that I looked like a chicken keeper "...and you're the only person I know who would take that as a compliment!!) HENthusiastic
I managed to get into a long conversation about chook keeping whilst having a full leg wax ps cinnamon; some of us online folk dont have the same hen house....... but we're still full blown omleteers! Maybe just poorer ones

Ain't Nobody Here
I find people just don't get the forum thing . I often find myself saying "a friend of mine" or "someone I know" rather than admit that you are all "virtual" friends . (I certainly think no less of you all for that .) (plus he'd really like some, but his wife says no....goodness I hope they dont ever read this !! ) We get the same rolling of eyes looks from all our family members and friends and work colleagues when we discuss "our girls". I think people who dont have chickens are secretly jealous!
Seagazer
I agree with ANH - its the forum thing that most of my friends and family roll their eyes at. Almost as if we're all freaks. We're not are we? Are we? No they're the odd ones. Everyone always asks after my chickens but then again that could just be because they think I'm the nutty person with all the animals
Chickvic
If I'm not around my children do this and say "Mom's on Omlet!" I tend to drop chickens into the conversation quite frequently and forum time is my time! DH occasionally reads posts and has once or twice answered in my name but he doesn't spend hours on here like I do
jlo
The trouble is that all the topics on the forum tend to be topical so we have the same kind of virtual conversations that we have with "real" people. I will then explain what someone on the forum has said - I then have to explain that it is a forum of omleteers andmy friends look at me with the and are obviously thinking something along the lines of, "I never thought that Jane would be someone who would post on a forum.!" I was at a parents' thing at school last night where they were explaining about internet dangers. We were asked for a show of hands as to who used the internet for email ?(everyone) internet shopping ?(a few hands went down) booking holidays ?(a few more went down).... social networking sites? (Just me and another parent with our hands up) ...forums? That would be just me then! I did get a few funny looks!

alih
it's amazing isn't it how soon the bug is caught..at work I am to many someone to tease (very gently) about my chicken knowledge, but there are already 2 of the men who are desperate to get eglus and chooks for their wives for Xmas. Tonight at the bonfire my brother was being asked whether he was going to get chickens like me and he said a flat "no"...oh dear, I thought, as I recalled my conversation with his wife only yesterday about how her garden makeover is to incorporate chicken house and run!!!! I find children are the best converts - they are so ready to accept the whole thing..my nieces are constantly nagging my sister to get chooks...they will take over the world, mark my words! keyhole kate
My family think I am all bonkers as I live breathe and dream chooks, and will bore anyone to death whether they like it or not I had a conversation with my Ortho Consultant, about chooks, what else whilst he was removing the stiches from my hand. He then asked me to stay so he could ask me questions about Omlet, the girls etc he is now getting his wife a cube & chooks for Christmas as she's mad about all kinds of animals My OH waiting outside thought something was wrong or I had done a runner
Angels4
I keep all my work documents on my computer and therfore must always have it with me. My lap top has become my "wallet" and I've become that proud parent that wants to show everybody pictures of my girls (luckily, all my pictures are on the computer) and I often catch people giving each other looks and rolling their eyes when I ask if they want to see the latest shots. My friends often joke that the eggs I'm supplying them with are drugged, so it is easier for me to control their mind.

ScottishMike
I find people just don't get the forum thing . Oh tell me about it!!! I stumbled onto a snowboard forum YEARS ago - got interested, started posting on it - 7 years later, and 25k posts later, I've been on holiday with some of them, I go to parties populated solely by them, I've had some at my house for dinner, I've been put up overnight by some, and have put some up overnight at my house - ALL met through the forum Then of course I get a bit interested in the idea of keeping a few hens, and I find this place, and I get endless amounts of help and advice, and people being REALLY generous and helpful in practical ways too And to think, people will laugh about my 'virtual' friends - pah! joke's on them
Redwing
I think the people at my work are shocked by how I have changed from being someone who joked "if I am awake I am working for xxxxx" or "if you cut me in half I would have xxxxx written through me like a stick of rock" to being someone who says: "have you seen my chicken house? have you got the internet up? its www.omlet...... yes, yes your report, in a minute.... dot co dot uk, click on Products.......... " I still love my job mind I think you will have to admit defeat for now and retreat to re-group

I hope you didn't have to tell them about the Get-Togethers Jane? - fancy meeting up with people we've only met on a forum My family were really shocked at the short time it had taken me from having two hens, finding out that there was such a thing as a forum and then inviting people I'd never met to my house!!! Egluntyne
Him Indoors was mightily concerned the first time I went to a get together. We had all sorts of safety thingies in place. I couldn't quite believe that I was doing the very thing we urge our children not to do....meet total strangers we have only encountered online. At least it was in a public place and I could scarper if I didn't like the look of them. I did......like the look of them, that is. It was Claret, Rosie, Lesley, Carl, Snowy and her boys and Choccy, but I had already met her. In fact she is to blame for pointing me in the direction of the forum.
